William Richard Salter, or “Bill” as his friends called him, departed on July 5, 2015 at 1 p.m. of natural causes at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home where he had been a resident in the assisted living facility for ten years. He was surrounded by his daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Nelson Miranda, at the time of death, as well as the devoted and skilled nursing staff at the facility. Bill was born in Sasser, GA on July 11, 1924 and was the 13th child of 14 of Jesse and Sally Salter. Bill served his Country as a Marine during WWII, and then as an Airman during the Korean conflict where he spent over two years in Korea and Japan. He also served in the Merchant Marines where he traveled the world and was on the Benjamin Harrison Merchant Ship when it was torpedoed by the Germans. Bill was exceptional at baseball and spent time playing in the Mexican league. Afterwards, he returned to Los Angeles where he trained and worked with the Los Angeles Police Department.
