Katherine (Kay) S. Kattman , formerly of Smithville, NJ, passed away May 25 at the age of 93. She was born on Jan. 10, 1920, in Vertes Boglar, Hungary, to the late Charles and Katherine Sepp, who brought her to the US as a child. Kay served her country in the Army Air Corps, being honorably discharged in 1943. She gardened passionately all her life, learning all the Latin names of the flowers and plants she loved. Kay entered floral arranging competitions, joined garden clubs and served as President of one in New Jersey, created Bonsai dish gardens, always sharing her extensive knowledge with others. An award-winning artist, Kay spent most of her life drawing and painting. She was an accomplished seamstress and knitter. Her natural creativity led her to many crafts, including needlework, rug hooking, hand quilting and jewelry making. Kay’s motto was, “If someone else can do it, I can do it.” Her interests were numerous, and she enjoyed playing sports including swimming, tennis and golf. She had a business selling plants, raised Dachsund puppies, obtained a Red Cross Lifesaving certificate, became a licensed hairdresser, opened an antique shop.
