Dulcie A. Powell, 91 of Leonardtown, MD, passed away May 15, 2016 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD. Dulcie was born December 31, 1924 in Albert Town, Jamaica to the late Sylvester Powell and Beryl Mae Segree Powell. Dulcie earned her Master’s degree in Botany from the University of Toronto. She was initially employed by the Institute of Jamaica – Hope Gardens. She wrote articles of information that are used by botanists worldwide today. She was employed as the Assistant Curator of Harvard Herbarium and the Smithsonian Institute of Natural History. After many dedicated years, she retired from the Department of Agriculture, after a successful career as a botanist, introducing many forms of plant life to the United States. Her hobbies included creating many beautiful flower gardens. She was a meticulous craftsman and her gardens were works of art. She had a great love and dedication for her church, which she helped to found and establish St. George Episcopal Church in Lakeland, FL. She made many exquisitely detailed banners and articles for the church. Her greatest love was for her family, whom she was very close with.
