Agnes Neoma Barnes, 88 of Piney Point, MD, departed this life on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospice, after a brief illness. Nana, as she was affectionately known, was born on March 6, 1928 in Great Mills, MD to the late John & Alberta (Mason) Saxon, the youngest of three children. Agnes married the love of her life, Alvin Rudolph Barnes, a.k.a. Poppie, on September 3, 1944. They were devoted to one another for 53 years, with him calling her “Nema” and her calling him “That Handsome Dude”. From this union, they were blessed with five children. Nana was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. Agnes was educated at St. Peter Claver School and Cardinal Gibbons High School respectively. After graduating from high school, she apprenticed under Ms. Jeannette Tolbert, as a beautician. She earned her cosmologists license in the late 1950’s and opened the Friendship Beauty Shop, in her home, shortly thereafter. She continued to work in her beauty shop well into her 80’s. A devout Catholic, she was a lifelong member of St. George’s Catholic Church in Valley Lee, MD, where she served as a lector and co-chaired numerous church events. Nana served her community […]
