Philip Alfred “Al” Gatton, 85 of Leonardtown, MD passed away on August 19, 2017 in Leonardtown, MD. Born on June 11, 1932 in Bushwood, MD, he was the son of the late Frances Louise Gatton and Philip Dominic Gatton. Al was the loving husband of the late Jeanne Sunderland Gatton, whom he married on July 4, 1952 in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Compton, MD, and who preceded in death on July 22, 2013. Al is survived by his children; Sandra Abell (George) of Leonardtown, MD, Joyce Downs (Preston) of Mechanicsville, MD, and Philip L. Gatton (Tracy) of Hollywood, MD. Granddaughters Melissa Long (Brandon) of Mechanicsville, MD and Shannon Dent (Rob) of Chaptico, MD, 3 great-grandchildren; Hailey and Christopher Long and Robby Dent. Siblings: Francis Morehead, Ralph Gatton and Ellen Hill. He was preceded in death by his siblings; Doris Bussler, Everett Gatton and Calvin Gatton. Charles; lovingly known as poppy passed away on Saturday morning, August 19, 2017 at his home surrounded by his wife and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Kennedy Norris and Mary Hilda Abell-Norris. He is survived by his wife Agnes of 62 years, both were lifelong St. Mary’s County, MD residents. Charles is survived by their children and spouses; Paul and Suzanne, Frances, Brenda and Sam, Terrie and Pat. Six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren and his sister Mary Agnes Woodburn of Hollywood, MD. He was preceded in death by his son David Norris. Charles enlisted in the National Guard during the Korean war for 2 years, then went on to serve active duty in the Army at Fort Bragg, NC in the 82nd Airborne division. While serving in the Army he earned the National Defense Service Medal. He was a lifelong mechanic and locksmith at C.N. Tire in Leonardtown, MD until he closed the shop to work from his home garage. Alma Ruth Rawlings, 76, of Mechanicsville, MD passed away at her residence in Mechanicsville on August 22, 2017. Alma was born to the late Carl E. Williams, Sr. and the late Nelda McMannis-Williams in Bayard, WV on December 20, 1940. Alma was an Ordained Deacon, volunteer with Meals on Wheels, taught Bible School. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved to watch the Nationals and Redskins. In addition to her parents, Alma was predeceased by her husband, George E. Rawlings, Sr.; sisters, Katheryn Nichols, Shirley Gregory; brother, Buster Williams, Jr. and grandson, Christopher Hicks. Alma is survived by her daughters, Deborah Albright (Ricky), Patricia Bassford (Francis), Helen Hicks (Chris); son, Eddie Rawlings (Patti); grandchildren, Rick Albright, Jr., Crystal Albright Hutson, Cassie Bassford, Roy Bassford, Christopher Hicks, Kimberly Hernandez, Rebecca Burnett, Eddie Rawlings, III; great grandchildren, Evan Hutson, Brooke Hutson, Mia Hernandez and Wyatt Burnett. Joseph R. Stotesbury, age 101, of La Plata, MD, passed away at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home on August 19, 2017 with his wife and daughter by his side. He was born in Pantego (Pike Road), NC, the fourth of nine children born to the late Joseph L. Stotesbury and Annie S. Davis Stotesbury. He was a U. S. Army World War II veteran (34th ENGR BN – Schofield Bks/CO “C” 65th ENGR BN 25th Division) and Pearl Harbor survivor. He served at Luzon, Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Central Pacific and received the American Defense Medal with one bronze star, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with four bronze service stars, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star. After the war, he was employed by the Capital Transit Company and later served as a Supreme Court of the United States Police Officer. He was a charter member of both the Ft. Dupont Masonic Lodge, Washington, DC and the Oxon Hill, MD Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed playing checkers and billiards with friends at the Clark Senior Center in La Plata. Robert Kermit Hayden III, better known as Bobby, left this world on August 19, 2017 the way he lived life, fast and not so gently. He was born on July 8, 1971 in La Plata, Maryland to Mary Ann Hayden and the late Robert Kermit Hayden, Jr. He was a talented diesel mechanic, strong as an Ox, a good looking man with a silver tongue, a beautiful smile and always kept you laughing with his wittiness. Bobby had a love for 80’s music, fast & loud cars and trucks. Bobby lead life by the three P’s: “Point, Pride and Principle; they will get you every time”, he would say. He loved his wife, adored his daughter and was proud of his stepson’s and the boys next door. He tried to teach them everything he knew, some good things and some not so good things. Lena Dorothy Toder, age 94 of White Plains, Maryland (formerly of New York and Seat Pleasant, Maryland) died August 23, 2017 at her residence with Hospice. Lena was a Retail Cashier with Grand Union Grocery and A&P Grocery for 35 plus years. She was of the Methodist faith who enjoyed gardening, including growing vegetables, fishing, traveling, but most of all being with family. She was the daughter of Robert Cowan and Alice Spencer Cowan. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, George Daniel Toder Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Karen Toder; and her brother-in-law, Edward Cuthrell. She is survived by her sons, George “Sam” Toder Sr. and Harold W. Toder and wife Connie; her brother, Robert S. Cowan and wife Linda; and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Cuthrel. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Roy was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served from 1967-1969 (Vietnam era). He worked as a Logistics Specialist with the Department of Defense for 32 years and was a member of First Baptist Church of St. Charles in Waldorf, Maryland. He loved camping, especially in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan. Donald “Don” Robert Pobst, 80, of Mechanicsville, Maryland, passed away on August 18, 2017. Don was born on December 22, 1936 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri to the late Robert Pobst and the late Agnes Scherer Pobst. Don is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judith Ann Mindrup Pobst, his sons, Gregory and Kenneth Pobst, his daughter-in-law Sarah Murphy Pobst, his sisters, Janet Jackson and Betty Jo Czarnecki and his grandchildren, Allie, Megan, Logan and Ryder Pobst. Don was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all. Don honorably served in the US Navy for 20 years and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Barbara Sherrick Ellis Grubaugh, 75, of Mechanicsville, MD passed away on August 18, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born on November 29, 1941 in Kodiak, Alaska to the late Ward H. Ellis and the late Jean Barbara Shaw Ellis. Her family was her greatest joy and she loved spending time with them anytime she could. Barbara enjoyed watching the finches, hummingbirds, and other birds that would come to the feeders in her backyard. Rabbits were another love of Barbara’s and she collected several items related to her little fury friends. One of Barbara’s favorite things to do was to have English tea with her group of friends that were all natives of Great Britain. Ramsey Mink. Ruth moved to the DC area in 1959 where she worked at the Pentagon for 4 years before becoming a homemaker and raising her 4 children with her late husband, Robert A. Breads in Fort Washington, MD. She returned to work in 1978 at the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce for 26 dedicated years of service. After retiring she moved to the Villages of Wildewood where she became active in the community and served on the Board of Directors for the Wildewood Village Condominium Association for 6 years. Betty Louise Woodburn, formally Betty Louise Menser, of Hollywood, Maryland died on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Chesapeake Shores Nursing Home. She was born on May 4, 1939 in Baltimore, Maryland and was 78 years old. She graduated from Clara Barton Vocational High School, Baltimore, Maryland in 1958. She was member of the Eastern Star and Job’s Daughters, Dundalk, Maryland. Betty married Charles B. Woodburn, Sr. and together they had two children, Charles B. Woodburn, Jr. “Bert” and Robert Wayne Woodburn “Bobby”. Betty worked as a nurse at Baltimore City Hospital and as a visiting nurse. She left the nursing profession to be a stay at home mom. She volunteered at St. Johns Elementary School and was a member of the woman’s Lions Club of Lexington Park. Betty was a member of Leonardtown Baptist Church where she participated in Bible studies and prayer groups. She loved being a mom and grand mom, traveling and helping others. Barbara Ann Hardesty, 62, of Chesapeake Beach passed away August 21, 2017 at her residence, surrounded by family. She was born July 4, 1955 in Prince Frederick to Charles Ogden and Willie Mae (McDaniel) Flynn. She was raised in Bladensburg, and moved to Calvert County with her family at age fifteen. She graduated from Calvert High School in 1974. Barbara married William Hardesty in 1998 and they made their home in Chesapeake Beach. She was employed as an assistant manager at several retail stores and was also a floral arranger at Bowen’s Florist. Barbara enjoyed arranging flowers, making cards and stationery, Bingo, gardening, swimming in the pool, trips to Luray Caverns, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Barbara is survived by her husband William H. “Bill” Hardesty, daughters Christina M. Boswell and husband Melvin of Edgewater, Jennifer L. Blackwell and husband Russell of Chesapeake Beach, and Theresa A. McGuire and husband Zachary of Annapolis, step-daughters April Daniels and husband Lenny of Prince Frederick and Jennifer Myers and husband Sam of New Jersey. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, a sister Peggy Francis and a brother Thomas Flynn both of Chesapeake Beach.

Annette Greene, 70, of Lusby, MD passed away on August 19, 2017 at Washington Hospital Center. Born April 15, 1947 in Greenock, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late John Carroll and Annie (Boyle) Carroll. Annette graduated from St. Culumba’s High School in 1962 and from Argyll & Bute School of Nursing in 1978. She was the Director of Family and Individual Support Services with the ARC of Southern Maryland for twelve years, retiring July 28, 2011. Annette also chaired the Behavioral Change and Human Rights Committee and was head of the lay pastors at her church. Annette loved crafting, making jewelry, and spending time with family and friends. Annette is survived by her husband, Robert “Jack” Greene; daughter, Arlaine Freeman and husband Richard of Lusby, MD; grandchildren, Carl and wife Shelley, Sheila, Olivia and Conor; and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her son, Andrew White; and her brother, John Carroll who died as an infant.

Roland Francis Miller, 90, of Deale passed away August 22, 2017 at his residence. He was born January 25, 1927 in Washington, D.C. to Bernard A. and Ruth I. (Goode) Miller. Roland was raised in Anacostia and attended several schools in the D.C. area. He joined the United States Army on May 6, 1946 and was honorably discharged October 23, 1947 after serving in WWII. Roland married Theresa Makosky February 18, 1950 and they lived in District Heights before moving to Deale in 1954. He was employed as a book binder for the Defense Mapping Agency, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Morningside VFW Post 9619 and Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where he served as a volunteer usher. In his leisure time Roland enjoyed camping, boat shows and spending time with his family.
