Elizabeth Regina (Stevens) Swales, at the age of 95, completed her circle of life on this earth on October 20, 2017 at her home in Hollywood, MD surround by her loving family to start a new circle of eternal life with her Heavenly Father. Elizabeth was born July, 14, 1922 in Hollywood, MD to the late Catherine Annie (Clark) Stevens and Joseph Ignatius Stevens. She grew up in a loving family with two older brothers, who have both preceded her in death. She was the apple of her parent’s eye and affectionately called “Sis Baby” — a nickname that remained throughout her life. Elizabeth was educated in the St. Mary’s County Public School System, attending Phyllis Wheatly Elementary School in Hollywood, MD and Banneker School in Loveville, MD. On April 19, 1941, Elizabeth married Joseph “Chester” Swales, Sr. of Leonardtown, MD and shared 50 years of marriage until his death in 1991. Together they raised a family of five daughters and two sons. Over the years the family grew to include 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. John W. Brubacher, 62, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away Thursday evening, October 19, 2017, at the Davis Hospice Center. John was born December 4, 1954, in Leonardtown, Maryland, son of the late Werner J. and Marguerite (Woodburn) Brubacher John enlisted in the United States Air Force on January 2, 1973 and served honorably during his tenure. He served in Operation Desert Storm and won numerous awards. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant on February 1, 1999. John was a graduate of Laramie County Community College and also Community College of the Air Force. His many interests included playing guitar and spending time with his wonderful friends. John is survived by his sisters and brother, Daniel Brubacher, Mary Jane Perigo, Johanna Malone and Agnes Hardcastle. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. Robert James De Atley, 84, of Waldorf, MD passed away October 20, 2017 at George Washington University Hospital, Washington, DC. Robert was born October 28, 1932 in Washington, DC to the late Norman and Eula De Atley. Robert was a Veteran of the United States Navy. He worked as a machinist at Briggs and Company and an environmentalist for Prince George’s County Government. He was an avid enthusiast of most sports especially the Washington Redskins and Nationals, Boston Celtics, Notre Dame and Maryland Terrapins. He loved to read, work in the yard and care for his two dogs; Sophie and Bella. In addition to his parents Robert is predeceased by seven siblings. Robert is survived by his wife of 61 years Eva M. De Atley; sons; Chris (Cheryl) and Michael De Atley (Gail) and daughter Gay O’Dell (Bruce); grandchildren; Sean De Atley, Jessica Diehl, Shayne O’Dell, Jamie De Atley and Michael De Atley, Jr.; eight great-grandchildren; brother Alvin De Atley and sister Eva Watson. Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 from 10:00AM until time of service at 11:30AM at Raymond Funeral Service, 5635 Washington Ave, La Plata, MD 20646. Pauline Zabko, a Southern Maryland resident for nearly 25 years, died early Saturday the 21st of October at the MedStar St Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD. Born in June of 1927 in Hammondsport, NY, the first child to be born in the United States to immigrant parents: Michal and Maria (Barabas) Lukacko. Pauline along with her eight siblings received her education and valuable life lessons in hard work on the family’s farm raising grapes for the then Taylor Wine Company. In her twenties after WWII she set out to see the world and ended up in Cleveland, Ohio. She was married in 1951 and started raising a family in Twinsburg Ohio. Pauline continued her education, received training in Nursing while raising her children in Rochester, NY. In the early 1970’s she took a Nursing position at the Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY where she worked until her retirement in 1988. Pauline, in her retirement moved to Great Bridge, VA where she loved spending time on Virginia Beach and helping take care of her grandsons, her plants and flower garden. Warren Leonard “Bud” Decker of Brandywine, Maryland, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the Genesis Healthcare Center in Waldorf surrounded by his loving family. He was 94 years old. Born on July 10, 1923 in Lima, Ohio, Bud was the son of the late Katherine A. Decker and William Decker. He moved to Washington, DC with his family when his father got a job at the Navy Yard. In his early years, Bud belonged to the Boys Club of Washington, DC (Southeast Branch). He graduated from Eastern High School in 1943. When World War II started, Bud and two high school friends decided to join the service before they were drafted so they could pick which branch of the service they wanted. Bud was interested in the Navy. Bud was sent to Bainbridge for boot camp for 16 weeks, then stationed in Boston, Massachusetts for training as a Machinist Mate, then assigned to Norfolk where he was assigned to the USS Maddox, one of the ALLEN M. William Spencer Owens, age 69 of Hughesville, Maryland, died October 22, 2017 at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. William was President and Owner of Bill Owens and Sons Glass Company in Hughesville, Maryland, founded in 1989. He was a huge Washington Redskins fan and loved old cars and Harley Davidson motorcycles. He was also known as a “Jack-of-all-trades.” He was the son of Edward Ralph Owens and Edith Spencer Owens. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Eileen Owens and his sister June Kaiser. He is survived by his wife, Merrylow Owens; his sons, Michael J. Owens (Zilpha), William J. Owens (Kelli), and Wayne S. Elsie Louise Klock, age 91 of La Plata, Maryland (formerly of Clinton, Maryland), died October 23, 2017 at Sagepoint Senior Living Center in La Plata, Maryland. Elsie was a retired Statistical Analyst with G.S.A. (U.S. Government). She was a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Forestville, Maryland. She enjoyed traveling, especially with her husband to Las Vegas. She most enjoyed raising her four children and her nieces. She was the daughter of George Ollie Brown and Elsie Eleanor Linton Brown. In addition to her parents, she is also predeceased by her husband, Marion Theron Klock; her sons, Robert O. Klock and James M. Klock; and her brother, Donald Brown. She is survived by her children, Sharon K. Wade (Stanley), Michael W. Klock; her brothers, George and Samuel Brown; and her sister, Margaret. Per Erik Lindstrom, age 90, October 11, 1927- October 25, 2017. Born in Tenala, Finland, he was the youngest of Isak Edvard and Linnea Lindstrom’s ten children. He is survived by Alice, his wife of 62 years, and two daughters, Nancy Cantrell (Bill) and Laura Snell (Woody) and granddaughters Hayley Cantrell and Lauryn Cantrell. He is preceded in death by his only grandson, Ryan Cantrell. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews in the U.S., Finland and Sweden. Known by many as Pelle, Perus, Erkki, and Per, he was also known as “Pap” by good friends and neighbors Terri Bowie and Hannah Bowie-Bird. Erik came to America in 1951 as a master machinist, having served in the Finnish army. He also served two years in the American army before becoming a U.S. citizen on May 11, 1954. He then worked for several companies, including AMF before establishing Saunas by Erkki which he ran for over 50 years, designing/building hundreds of saunas, most notably the sauna in the Embassy of Finland, Washington, D.C. Gwendolyn Ann “Gwen” Arnold, 76, of Lexington Park passed away October 21, 2017 at her residence. She was born August 9, 1941 in Capitol Heights to Wilmer and Alice (Brady) Greenwell. Gwen married Donald Arnold in June of 1961 and they lived in Capitol Heights before moving to Prince Frederick, where she lived for 32 years. She moved to Lexington Park in 2011 and lived with her daughter until her passing. Gwen was employed as a meat wrapper for A&P Grocery and later Safeway for 16 years. She then went to work cleaning houses for 9 years until her retirement. Gwen enjoyed visiting with friends at Calvert Pines Senior Center and found joy in crafts, flowers and games of chance. She wanted to be remembered as a funny lady who wished everyone happiness. Gwen was preceded in death by her husband Donald James Arnold, Sr. in 1986, son Joseph A. Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Johnson, 89, of Lothian passed away October 21, 2017 at Riva Terrace Assisted Living in Davidsonville. She was born April 1, 1928 in Lothian to Calvert Lorenzo and Elizabeth Anne “Lillie” (Moreland) Wilkinson. Betty attended Owensville Elementary School and graduated from Southern High School in 1946. She married John Herbert Johnson on October 17, 1947 and they lived in Lothian, where Betty was primarily a homemaker raising her three children. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, reading and sewing. Betty loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and nieces and nephews who affectionately called her MeMaw. Clarence Ronald Cain “Ron” was born November 5, 1936 in Washington DC to Clarence Thomas Cain and Anna Belle (Mauk) Cain. He grew up as a child of a service member and traveled all over the world. When he was 17 he joined the Air Force and served his country proudly and honorably for 20 years in active duty. Serving numerous tours overseas including Vietnam. Upon retirement from the US Air Force he worked for the Department of Defense for the Army for 19 years, 12 of which were in South Korea. Once retired from this position he moved back to Southern Maryland to enjoy his retirement. He loved to travel with his wife, they enjoyed many adventures traveling all over the United States. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. Ron passed away on Sunday, October 22 at home. Rosa “Maria” Parrish, of Temple Hills, MD passed on October 22, 2017 at the age of 85. Born in Izmir, Turkey to Maria and Giovanni Paolillo. Maria loved her family. Most of her life, revolved around her family in the cherished role as mother to her only daughter and “Noni” to her three grandchildren. Her focus was always on others; as this was the true definition of one with great humility-not thinking less of herself, but thinking of herself less… and she did this with gladness. But more than anything, she was loved for the way she made everyone feel. Her role as Noni extended way beyond her own precious grandchildren as she will be remembered as everyone’s grandmother. Maria possessed characteristic joy and grace. She considered friendship as something of value and was faithful to a select group of ladies who quickly became her lifelong friends. Bernard Francis Shymansky, Sr., 73 of LaPlata, MD originally of Cobb Island, MD, died on October 23, 2017 at the University of Charles Regional Medical Center in LaPlata, MD. He was born on September 23, 1944 at Physician’s Memorial Hospital in LaPlata, MD. He was the son of the late Joseph L. and the late Frances E. Shymansky. Bernie served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969. At a very early age he started his career at Bobby Norris’ Grocery store on Cobb Island. He continued his Grocery Trade working at many Grocery Retail Stores, retiring from McKay’s in Charlotte Hall, MD in October 2011. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John Michael “Mike” Shymansky, Sr. and Patrick Brent “Pat” Shymansky. Bernie was a life-time member of the 5th District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad where he was Rescue Captain for many terms. He also served as President of the Old Charles County Rescue Squad. Born on September 10, 1947 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Violet Lucy Norris Graves, and Richard Harold Graves. Tommy is survived by his wife Darlene Patricia Hammett Graves, whom he married on June 9, 1979 in Holy Angels Catholic Church Avenue, MD. Tommy is survived by his children; Rebecca Powell (Pete) of Gilbert, AZ, Ricky Graves (Jenna) of Gilbert, AZ, and 4 grandchildren; Sydney, Shane, Sasha Powell and Connor Graves. He was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Michael Graves, siblings; Joseph Harold Graves, and John Franklin Graves. He was a graduate of Chopticon High School in 1966.
