Ross Lee Brandstetter of Prince Frederick, MD, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at the age of 76. He was born in Sullivan, WV, on March 4, 1941, to Covey [Lilly] and Phillip E. Brandstetter. Ross worked for Amtrack as a Parts Department Manager, retiring in 1985. He was the beloved husband of Carolyn G. [Williams] Brandstetter. In June, 2017, they celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary. Ross was the brother of Clifford, Charles, Roger, Phillip, Joyce Critchley, Barbara Kay O’Conner and Betty Ann Danenberg. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and other family members. Family invites friends to Lee Funeral Home Calvert, Owings, MD 20736, on Friday, October 20th from 5 to 8 pm; where Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 21st at 9 am. My dad passed away yesterday. He was a great guy who lived a fabulous life. He wore many hats in his lifetime: Dedicated Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, WWII Vet, Cold war Veteran, Antarctic engineer and explorer on the 1958 International Geophysical Year expedition, Inventor with several patents, musician, senior level federal employee, active with the VFW and American Legion – and this list could go on for a long time. Dad had a positive outlook to everyone he met and for everything he did. Dad, you will be missed forever.

Ernest “Lee” Bliss, 73, of Port Charlotte, FL and Huntingtown, MD, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at his home in Huntingtown surrounded by his loving family. Lee was born in Washington, DC, on April 18, 1944, to Alice [Krouse] and Stanley F. Bliss. He was a United States Air Force veteran and worked as a plant foreman for the federal government. Lee enjoyed crabbing, fishing, bowling and watching the Washington Redskins. Lee is survived by his fiancée, Marylou E. Hickman and children David Lee Bliss, Christopher Sean Bliss (Barbie) and Holly Caroline Wooten (Christopher). He was the devoted grandfather of Michael, Ethan, Ryan, Evan, Nathaniel, Christopher, Lauren, Erin, Marissa, Cora and Eliana. Lee was the brother of Wayne, Stanley, Zane, Evelyn, Wanda and Donna. Martha Virginia Knott, 73, died peacefully at her home in St. Leonard, Maryland surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born September 1, 1944 in Norfolk, VA. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Howard and Alma Walker, and two brothers Sonny Walker and Todd Paxton. She is survived by her husband, Harry Knott, daughters, Laura Hardesty and Wendy Zurenko, son Shawn Paxton, and step children: Kevin Knott and Kelly Knott as well as 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Martha is also survived by her sisters, Joyce Early, Dorothy Burns, and Sandra Pitts, brother Larry Walker and numerous nieces and nephews. Martha enjoyed spending quality time with her children and grandchildren, laughing, dancing and music. She will be dearly missed by all. A Memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday October 21, 2017, 11 AM at St, George Catholic Church, 19199 St. George Church Road, Valley Lee, MD. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Justine Rae Moschetto-Parrott, 52, of Port Republic, Maryland passed away on October 3, 2017 at home. She was born on July 8,1065 in Cheverly, MD to GiGi and Shirley Moschetto. Justine is survived by her daughter, Jessica Moschetto Garner Phelps, grandchildren, Eric and Nick Edwards, her parents, GiGi and Shirley Moschetto, brother Anthony Moschetto and his wife Holly, sister, Judy “Skeeter” Murray and her husband Chuck and her late brother Louise Michael Moschetto. She is also survived by nieces and nephews: Wesley, Bandon, Sierra, and Stella Murray, Tony and Joseph Moschetto, and Hannah and Logan Withem. SFC (ret.) George Leroy Stewart, 58 of Hinesville, GA (formerly of Compton, MD), passed away on October14, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. George, born on November 19, 1958, was the oldest son of George and Mary Stewart of Leonardtown, MD. After graduation from Chopticon High School, he joined the Army. He was very proud of his military career and retired after 22 years of service. During those years, he was stationed in Germany, Fort Lewis, WA, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, Barracks, HI and Fort Stewart, GA retiring in Hinesville in 1998. He earned several awards to include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Nation Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. During his 22 years of service, he also coached football and baseball on different posts, mentoring several children. A diehard Cowboys fan, George enjoyed life and lived every moment that he could with zest. He loved his family and friends like no other and loved to laugh, sing and dance. On Wednesday, October 11, 2017 Claudia Jean Wortman, aged 69, of California, MD died at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. after spending several days in the ICU at the hospital. She had fought metastatic breast cancer for over 2.5 years. She was the beloved wife of CDR. David Wortman, SC, USN (Ret). Claudia is survived by her husband, their two children, Dana and Andrew and his wife, Kyle, her mother, Gwendolyn, and her brother, William and his wife, Marla and their family. Claudia was the daughter of William and Gwendolyn Galbraith of Beemer, NE. Her father was the National Commander of the American Legion in 1966-67. Before marrying David, she lived most of her early years in Nebraska, where she graduated from Beemer High School in 1966 and the University of Nebraska in 1970. She met her future husband, David, in 1969 and they were married at the beginning of his Naval career in December 1971 at the Naval Security Chapel in Washington, DC. James Laurence “Larry” Hills, 76, of Great Mills, MD passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 12, 1941, to the late James Ora Hills and Evelyn G. Hart Hills. He was born in Washington, D.C. but was raised in St. Mary’s County. He was a graduate of Great Mills High School class of 1960. On November 29th, 1975 he married his beloved wife Deborah L. Hills at St. George Episcopal Church in Valley Lee, MD. Together they celebrated over 41 wonderful years of marriage. Larry was a member of St. George Episcopal Church, Classic Car Club, and the Lions Club of Lexington Park. He invested many years of hard work and customer service in building his excavating company with his two sons “Jay & Darryl” Larry Hills & Sons Excavating, Inc. Lou Vernia Barnes, 84, of Lexington Park, MD died on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 9, 1933 in Coeburn, VA to the late Lonnie Sexton and Ida Mae Sexton. On November 11, 1950, she married her beloved husband, George Barnes in Valley Lee, MD. Together they celebrated 62 wonderful years of marriage until his death in 2013. Lou was a homemaker and enjoyed canning, cooking, quilting and gardening. Family was her greatest love and she enjoyed spending as much time as possible with all of them, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Charles “Gary” Norris, 62, of St. Inigoes, MD passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born September 15, 1955 in Leonardtown, MD. His father was the late Robert H. Norris, Sr. Gary was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. He attended St. Michael’s Catholic School and Great Mills High School. During his school years he played little league baseball for the Strugglers and later slow pitch for the Ridge Orioles. He was a dedicated and skilled carpenter working for several companies and then later for himself; he took great pride in his work. Gary married his girl Susan in Potomac MD. Together they celebrated over 27 wonderful years of marriage. He enjoyed being on the water: boating, crabbing, fishing and jet skiing. He enjoyed gardening and cooking on the grill. Alice Virginia McDaniel, 73, of North Beach passed away October 18, 2017. She was born November 11, 1943 in Washington, D.C. to William and Alice (Newman) Sherry. Alice was raised in D.C. and lived most of her life in Forestville until moving to North Beach in 2016. She attended Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School in Washington, D.C. She was employed as a guidance secretary and cafeteria worker for Forestville Military Academy. Alice married William Lyle McDaniel in Upper Marlboro on November 6, 1970. She was very giving and was always providing to others. She will be remembered as a fighter and loving grandmother, whose greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband William. Alice is survived by children Lyle McDaniel of Gaithersburg, Sherry Lehnen and husband Michael of Chesapeake Beach, Brian McDaniel and wife Jennifer of Huntingtown and Audrey Rotindo and husband Phil of Marlton, NJ, step children Patti, Billy, Holly, Rick and Lorna. Also surviving are grandchildren Sara (Donald), Travis, Michael, Kylie, Aaron, Matthew and Ashley, a sister Margaret Conway and a brother John Sherry.

Lisa was raised in Mitchellville and graduated from Largo High School in 1986. She was primarily a homemaker and she loved animals. Melissa is survived by her mother and step father Virginia Beall and Raymond Catterton of Owings, sister Stacey Beall of Baltimore, longtime companion Antonio Queen, children David Frederick, Brittany Walker, Timothy, Glen, Terrance, Mariah and Mercedez Frederick, Destiny, Shane and Faith Thompson, two grandchildren and one niece and nephew. She was preceded in death by her father Herbert C. Beall.

Richard Odermatt, Jr., age 66 of Fairfax, Virginia, died October 19, 2017 at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. Dick was the Director of Research Editing for the Heritage Foundation and was its longest serving employee. He had an endless range of knowledge and the ability to give attention to the smallest details. He spoke nine foreign languages and travelled extensively. He was a Seminary Professor of Byzantine Chant and a Cantor at Holy Transfiguration Melkite Greek Catholic Church in McLean, Virginia. He was the son of the late Richard Odermatt Sr. and Marion Kolano Odermatt. He is survived by his sisters, Janet and Lois Odermatt of Uniondale, New York. Friends received on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 6-8PM with Prayer Service at 7:30PM at Holy Transfiguration Church, 8501 Lewinsville Road, McLean, Virginia 2210 and where Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 10AM. Eugene G. Macogay of Waldorf, Maryland, died on Friday, October 20, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 89 years old. Born on September 6, 1928 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Sylvia Hall Macogay and Alejandro C. Macogay. Mr. Macogay was a Senior Engineer of Plant Operations in the Engineering Department of the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC before retiring. In the 1940’s and 1950’s Mr. Macogay was a professional boxer. He loved to cook and have everybody present enjoy what he served. His family was his life. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Constance F. David Lee Poland, 83, of Temple Hills, MD, died peacefully at the Hospice House in Harwood, MD. Dave was born in Ashburn, VA but spent most of his life in Temple Hills, MD. He was retired from the DC Government, Department of Highways. Beloved husband of the late Joan J. Poland; devoted father of Susan Stempora (Michael) of White Plains, MD and Deborah Vickers (James, Jr.) of South Riding, VA; grandfather of David Dixon, Jimmy Vickers (Amanda), Jenna Scarborough (Michael) and Kaitlyn Vickers; great-grandfather of Olivia and Everett Scarborough, Hunter, Maddie and Raegan Vickers and Haley Irizarry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilmer and Elsie Poland and sister, Joy D’Agnenica. He is survived by his sister, Doris Spooner (Arthur) of St. Pauls, NC. Dave was a devoted racing fan, Ford man and Redskins fan. As a hobby and part-time jobs, he managed the Acquasco Speedway and Beltsville Speedway. He was also an avid bowler for many years as part of the Pinbusters league in Clinton, MD. John Edward Hudack, 87, died Thursday, October 19, 2017. He was born May 1, 1930, to John and Anna (Wargo) Hudack, in Windber, Pennsylvania. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Christina (Strongosky) Hudack; his daughters Vickie Briggs (Rusty), Michele Kormanik (David), and Karen Mahaffie (Mike); his grandchildren Stephanie and William (Shannon) Briggs; David (Jenny) Kormanik, Daniel Kormanik; Colleen and Christina Mahaffie; his great-grandchildren Kayden, Eva, David, Lexie and Cash; siblings Elizabeth Toth, James Hudack, Michael Hudack, and Charlotte Hunter; numerous nieces and nephews; and many close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Thomas, and his sister Patricia Clark. In high school, he played AAA baseball, but left school in his 11th year to work in the Windber coal mines to help his family. He then enlisted in the US Army during the Korean War, where he served from February 28, 1952, to February 12, 1954, as a Corporal (Technical) Radio Operator, where he received the Occupied Germany Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
