Ann Therese O’Boyle, Waldorf, Maryland, died in the Hands of the Lord on February 27, at Charles Co. Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family, following complications from chronic respiratory problems, Ann was a retired nurse and a valued member of a large Irish American family. Born in 1937, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James P. O’Boyle, Ann was educated at St. Mary School, Dunmore, at St. Paul’s High School and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Scranton. Ann was a dedicated nurse , working at the Maryland Veterans Hospital and in the ER at Southern Maryland Hospital, Clinton, where she established many close friendships. In retirement she did a variety of volunteer work ranging from health-care assessments at St. Peter’s Church, Waldorf, to tutoring recent immigrants. She was a long-time member of her parish prayer group, whose friendships she valued greatly. Ann said that her greatest contribution though was her total involvement with her large extended family, scattered from Virginia to Pennsylvania and Connecticut,. Daniel A. Cecil, 28, of Calvert County, died February 21, 2018. He was born on October 1, 1989, the son of Lawrence A. Cecil, Jr. (Tina Chlosta) of Waldorf, Peggy L. Miller and Stepfather Preston Miller, of Port Republic. Daniel attended Calvert High School and worked in the HVAC field. He had a love of sports, especially the Miami Dolphins. In addition to his parents, Daniel is survived by his beautiful son, Giovanni, brothers Ryan Cecil, and Tony Yorke, of LaPlata, John Preston Miller IV of Sunderland and Nicholas Dalton Miller of St. Leonard, grandparents, John and Karen Rowe of Waldorf, Lawrence and Elizabeth Cecil of Sunset Beach, NC, William Russell Garner, Jr. of Prince Frederick, Karen Lee Miller of Blufton, SC and many uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and loved ones. Ella LaVerne Logan, 91, of Sunderland passed away February 23, 2018 at Brightview Assisted Living in Edgewater. She was born August 23, 1926 in Baltimore to Louis Christian, Sr. and Ella I. (Bragg) Wolf. LaVerne was raised in Baltimore and graduated from Hyattsville High School in 1943. After high school, she sang at the USO where she met Mauro Bruno. They married in 1944 and later divorced in 1955. LaVerne sang professionally with big bands and while singing with The Vikings she met Stanley Cook. They married in 1956 and were married until his passing in 1976. She then married Richard “Dick” Logan in 1978 and they made their home in Falls, PA until moving to Sunderland in 2008. LaVerne was a gifted singer and won the Senior Idol Contest in Calvert County in 2013. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, the Lutheran Women’s Association, First Lutheran Church of Calvert County, and was a former member of Diamond Hollow United Methodist Church in PA. Charles Norwood Wood, 92, of Deale, MD passed away February 27, 2018 at his residence. He was born August 15, 1925 in Deale to Robert Norwood Wood and Sarah Ellen Proctor Wood. Charles spent his entire life on the farm where he was born, and he operated the family farm since his teenage years. He enjoyed farming and sharing his harvest with his family, friends, and neighbors. His interests were dump trucks and farm equipment, which he worked on and operated well into his eighties. Self-employed all of his life, Charles was a southern Anne Arundel County tobacco and vegetable farmer, and he planted and harvested oysters from the Chesapeake Bay. Married to June Griner Wood on August 6, 1954, Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, and also by his son, Leonard (Lenny) Kayton, sister Ethel Wood Nutwell, and brother Richard Proctor Wood. His first marriage to the late Gladys Crandell ended in divorce. Chris was primarily raised in Charles County and enjoyed history, working on cars, NASCAR and cooking. He was also a fan of the Washington Redskins. Brian Christopher Beltz, 40, of St. Leonard passed away February 23, 2018. He was born September 11, 1977 in Washington D.C. to Robert and Sharon Beltz. Brian was raised in Huntingtown and graduated from Northern High School in 1995. He married Christina Lavato in 2006 and they made their home in St. Leonard. Brian was employed as an appliance salesman with Lowes and HH Gregg for many years. During his career he won many awards and was recognized as the top salesman in his store. Brian enjoyed fishing, helping with his son Evan’s Cub Scouts and sports and also being involved in the community. He will be remembered as a helpful person with a great sense of humor and big heart who was always going out of his way to help others. Brian is survived by his wife Christina Ann Beltz of St. Leonard, son Evan A. Beltz, mother Sharon Beltz Auger and her husband Ron of Lady Lake, FL, sister Karen Beltz of Lexington Park, nephew Nico Shizas as well as many extended family and friends. Richard Allen “Ricky” Edge, 61, of Prince Frederick passed away February 26, 2018. He was born January 29, 1957 in Washington, D.C. to William Edmond and June Claire (Lehnar) Edge. Ricky was raised in Ft. Washington and graduated from Friendly High School. He then graduated from Prince George’s Community College with an Associate’s Degree and Bowie State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in business. Ricky was employed with Carsco Inc. as a sales representative before going to work for Ken Dixon Chevrolet as a parts manager and service writer. Ricky was known to everyone as Mr. Krip, one of the best drag racers at Maryland International Raceway and an undefeated street racer. He was a member of the International Hot Rod Association and former board member at MIR. He enjoyed drag racing, building racecars, collecting cars and was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins. William “Mutt” Tayman, age 84, passed away at his home in Croom, Maryland surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. He was born on January 30, 1934 in Croom, Maryland to William Vollie and Eleanor Rae Tayman He is survived by his wife Mary Lou Tayman, daughters Susie (Wade) Rawlings, Bonnie Puckett (Mike Parkinson), Brenda (Kris) Paddock, grandchildren Will Puckett (Morgan Parkinson), Brooke (Steven) Prather, and Taylor Rawlings. He is also survived by siblings Helen Cooper, Doris Tayman, Marie Windsor, William V. Tayman, Jr. and Woodrow Tayman. Mutt was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Cotton Tayman, and son-in-law Greg Puckett. Mutt enjoyed truck shows, tractor pulling, drag racing, and driving his 1979 Peterbilt. He was known as “King of the Road”. He will be greatly missed by many family and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Huntt Funeral Home in Waldorf, Maryland. Steve Medvan of Oxon Hill Maryland passed at 87 years of age. He was predeceased by his wife Evealean and is survived by his sons Steve Stevens and Glenn Stymiest, Glenn’s wife Susan and Grandchildren Christopher and Victoria. He was a retired Master Sergeant USAF serving at Andrews AFB and a Korean War Veteran. He served as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician handling aircraft maintenance scheduling, aircraft repairs and technical support. Steve attended Master Mechanics School, Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics where he studied aircraft sheet metal, structural maintenance and corrosion control. He obtained his Aircraft & Powerplants (A&P), and FCC Radio Tele, Class 3 Licenses and in his career worked on most large and small foreign and domestic aircraft and helicopters. He was also the owner operator of Medvan’s Airframe Repair at Hyde Field in Clinton Maryland for several years. Earlier in his career he worked for United Airlines. Being born and raised in Pittsburgh Steve was a Steelers and Penguins fan. Kimberly Sue Harris (maiden name Gaines) was the most extraordinary, strong, and inspirational woman in my life. She was a loving daughter and sister, a beloved wife, and my mother. Kimberly was born on May 8, 1966 to Elaine and Larry Gaines in Syracuse, New York. She grew up with her younger sisters Dion and Stacy in Northern Syracuse. A diligent and hard-working student, she excelled in her classes and entered State University of New York: Brockport with enough credits to skip her freshman year. She knew since she was young that she wanted to be a teacher, and she worked tirelessly towards that goal. Mom told me that when she graduated, she had offers from several different school districts on the Eastern seaboard, but for reasons she couldn’t explain at the time, she chose to work for the Prince George’s County Schools in Maryland. The reason why soon became apparent to her at new teacher orientation when she met a young man named Edmund Harris. Ethel Odetta Redman Pilkerton, 86, of Hollywood, MD died on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in LaPlata, MD. Ethel was the last surviving child of the late Jesse Andrew and Lucy Madeleine Bean Redman. She was born on March 1, 1931 in Valley Lee, MD and had a deep family history in St. Mary’s County. She enjoyed playing softball as a teen, playing cards with family, listening to music, boating, crabbing, cooking, and everything coconut. She attended Little Flower School in Great Mills and graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Ridge. She was the wife of John Henry Pilkerton, son of the late John Henry and Mary Lillian Quade Pilkerton. They married on April 14th, 1952 at St. George’s Roman Catholic Church in Valley Lee and celebrated almost 66 years together. Kathryn Quade passed away on March 1, 2018 at Hospice House in Waldorf. She was born August 25, 1924 in Baltimore, MD to Charles J. and Jennie O (Lehr) Stavros. She was the oldest of three children. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, George and Paul and her daughter, Barbara Ann Rice. On November 15, 1944 she married James Hillary Quade (deceased) and they had three children, Barbara, Jimmy, and Chuck (Charlie). Kathy had five grandchildren. Steve (Twanna) Rice, Chris (Renae) Rice, Jim Rice, Kathy (Jim) Kreilick and Susan (Ernie) Wright. Kathy had several jobs including working at the Sears Surplus Store and as the Manager for the 301 Drive-In. She also worked at the CVS in Waldorf for 38 years, until she finally retired in December 2010 at the young age of 86. Kathy enjoyed being with her family especially for special occasions like birthdays, holidays, and weddings. Her family meant everything to her. Susan Lofland Grote, 68, of La Plata, Maryland, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2018 at the St. Francis Hospital in Midlothian, Virginia. Born on April 29, 1949, in Havre de Grace, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Alice Gillespie Lofland and Harry Briscoe Lofland. Susan earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Frostburg State and her Master’s Degree at George Washington University. She was a teacher and later a Pupil Personnel Worker with the Charles County Public Schools. Susan was an active member, EMT, and Past Chief of Charles County Rescue Squad Company 51 in La Plata and an instructor/trainer with the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute. She enjoyed traveling, antiquing, going to Ocean City, MD and rooting for the Baltimore Ravens. Susan was known for her generous heart and willingness to help anyone. Chase Bernard Mattingly, 21, of Chesapeake Beach passed away February 28, 2018. He was born October 14, 1996 in Prince Frederick to Edward Brett and Sandra Elizabeth (Gordon) Mattingly. Chase was raised in Calvert County and graduated from Northern High School in 2014. As a kid he enjoyed playing sports, especially basketball, lacrosse and baseball, as well as skateboarding and snowboarding. He was employed at Dunkirk BP and Sneade’s Ace Hardware in Owings before going to work as a highway road crew member for Aggregate Industries. He enjoyed exercising and working out, boxing and playing Xbox. He was also a fan of UFC, the Washington Capitals, Wizards and Redskins. Chase was an old soul, who was always trying to help others and give advice. He will be greatly missed. William C. Waterman, Jr., 86, of LaPlata, MD passed away on February 28, 2017 at the University of MD Charles Regional Medical Center in LaPlata, MD. Born in New York on July 3, 1931 to the late William C. Waterman, Sr. and the late Irene Waterman, William is also preceded in death by his loving wife, Norma E. Waterman; son, William Waterman; and brother, Carl Waterman. He is survived by his son, Kevin Waterman; sisters, Agnes Lamb and Joan Hunt. William served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years, retiring as a Master Sargent. Following his service in the Air Force, William began a career with the CIA as an Imagery Analyst. He loved to go Bass fishing and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. The family will receive friends at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home LaPlata, MD on Saturday March 10, 2018 from 1PM until Service time at 2PM. Doris Jane Nowell, 90, of LaPlata, MD passed away on March 1, 2018 at Genesis Elder Care in Waldorf, MD. Born on January 26, 1928 in Washington, DC to the late Willard Thomas Harrison and the late Mary Laura Harrison, Doris is also preceded in death by her loving husband, Talmage Dewitt Nowell, Jr., She leaves behind to cherish her memory sons, Thomas Dewitt Nowell and Guy Joseph Nowell; daughters, Mary Beth (Nowell) Ayers and Patricia Kathryn (Nowell) Cronise; sisters, Betty Lorraine Harding, Patricia Ann Long and Mary Lou Price; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Harley L. Lawrence of Forestville, MD passed on February 27, 2018 at the age of 87 years. Born in South Hero, Vermont, the son of Ellen Lombard Lawrence and John Lawrence. Harley grew up in South Hero, Vermont. Shortly following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force in 1950 and during his 20-year Air Force career, he held command and staff positions as an aircraft mechanic. He was deployed and served overseas in Vietnam. He retired honorably on December 31, 1970 with a rank of TSgt. After his military retirement, Harley worked for several years for the American Short Line Railroad Association as a printer. Harley was introduced to Jean at a Thanksgiving dinner, orchestrated by one of his military pals in November 1957. They were married in May of 1959 beginning their love story that spanned over 45 years before her death in 2004. Harley loved life with Jean, raising their four children. Together, they held tremendous pride for their children and grandchildren. Harley spent his entire life caring for his family, his church family, friends and people he met along his life’s journey. Helen Garner Ryan, (90), of Chesapeake Beach, Md, formerly of Clinton, Md, peacefully passed on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Burnett-Calvert Hospice House, in Prince Frederick, Md. Helen was born in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. and lived her whole life in the area. Beloved wife of the late John Thomas Ryan, Jr.; loving mother of John Thomas Ryan, III (Connie) and James Michael Ryan (Cindy); adoring grandmother of Rhiannon Ryan Magruder (John); great-grandmother of Camryn and Allisyn Magruder; sister of the late Betty Garner Minor; aunt of Darlene Minor Lamer and the late Deborah Minor; and a very special Aunt Tootsie to Krystal, Bobby, Cody and Embrey Grimes.
