John Joseph Celia, 96 of Charlotte Hall, MD passed away on August 23, 2018 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. John was born to the late Anthony and Marianna Celia on April 18, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA. He was a Computer Programmer for the Government until his retirement. John joined the U.S. Navy at an early age and served in World War II. On April 11, 1953 he was married to his beloved wife, Anna Mae. John enjoyed the classic old movies, baseball, and anything Italian. He was a math genius. There was no problem he couldn’t solve. He especially loved animals and they loved him. He often spoke of his experiences on his Navy Ship, The USS Achernar and the trip he took with his wife to Italy. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife, Anna Mae Celia; his brothers, Anthony Celia and Joseph Celia. John is survived by his sons, Frank R. Celia (Ann) of Waldorf, MD, John A. Celia (Susan) of Baltimore, MD; his daughter, Catherine A. Celia of Springfield, MO; his sister, Maria Anne Walker; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Norma Estelle Greenwell, 97, of Brandywine, MD, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018, at UM Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, MD. Norma was born to Henry F. Schualbach and Estelle Adams Schualbach in Washington, DC, on July 13, 1921. Norma worked for Virginia Life & Casualty Insurance Company, John Randolph Patent Attorney and the National Council of Teacher Education before retiring to Mechanicsville, MD in 1973. She was of the Methodist faith and a member of Mt. Zion Church in Laurel Grove, MD. She enjoyed coin collecting, poetry, and going to yard sales. In addition to her parents, Norma was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Russell Greenwell, whom she married on February 27, 1946. Norma is survived by her nephew, Bernard E. Sewell and his wife Mary G. Sewell of Brandywine, MD; and grand-nieces, Jacqueline Sewell of Brandywine, MD, Candice (Sewell) Webster (husband Ian) of Huntingtown, MD, and Madeline (Sewell) Alvarado (husband Walter) of Waldorf, MD. Goldie Christine “Susie” Woodburn, 69, of Hollywood, MD passed away Sunday, August 19, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 19, 1949 in Kitzmiller, MD to the late Alvin Tasker and Ann Hope Clark Abell. Susie is a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. She was employed as an administrative clerk for many dedicated years with Willow Medical Supply until her retirement. She also was a compassionate and loving home healthcare provider for many of her family and friends. She enjoyed taking vacations with her family, especially cruises. She also enjoyed going with her grandchildren to amusement parks. She was a long-time fan of Days of Our Lives, her favorite movie was Dirty Dancing, and her favorite musician was Elvis Presley. She made delicious chicken and dumplings. She was an animal lover, especially her miniature pinscher, Hope. Her family was her greatest love and she enjoyed spending her time with them. Lacy Maresa Jenkins was called to eternal life on August 21, 2018. She died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family while in the care of Hospice. Lacy was born in Newport News, Virginia on 12/4/1968. She was the fifth of six children born to Benjamin Larry and Catherine Jenkins. She was raised in Maryland. She graduated from Towson Catholic High School in 1986 and from Essex Community College in 1993. Lacy has been a resident of Boca Grande since 1998. She loved her life on the island. She was a power walker, and she was well known to the community. She loved dogs, and was a regular at the dog park. Lacy was devoted to water aerobics at The Pass Club. She unflinchingly waded into the pool, in frigid weather, when others failed to show. Lacy had great respect for those tasked with public safety, and regularly checked in with the local deputies. She frequented the Community Center and the Library (usually checking election results.) Lacy courageously persevered through multiple hospitalizations in her childhood/life. She loved her volunteer work at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She played piano for nursing home residents (esp. “A Time For Us.”) […]

Angela Yvonne (Brooks) Brown, 62 of Owings, MD, went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, August 24, 2018 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, Charlotte Hall, MD. Angela was born on April 24, 1956 in Petersburg, VA to Richard and Rosa Brooks. She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1976. Angela enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Savannah, GA where she married Kevin, who was also serving in the United States Army. After moving to Southern Maryland, Angela began working for multiple defense contractors as a logistics specialist. Over 9 years, the couple welcomed 3 children into their home and Angela set about teaching them how to be strong, work hard and respect others. Her children remember her as a kind, loving mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals. Angela was accomplished at cooking and hosting her family during the holidays. She was a dedicated wife and mother who loved her boys and who was passionate about supporting her husband’s entertainment business. Charles Eugene “Gene” Potts, 68, of Leonardtown, MD passed away on August 26, 2018 in Callaway, MD. He was born on June 1, 1950 in Prince George’s County, MD and was the son of the late Margaret Elizabeth Mattingly Potts, and Francis Marion Potts. Gene is survived by his siblings; Fran Conway (Pat) of Silver Spring, MD, Richard Potts (Barbara) of Hollywood, SC, Jo Ann Potts of Leonardtown, MD, and Jerry Potts (Maria) of Rockville, MD. As well as a host of loving nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his sister Terry Potts. Gene graduated from Gwynn Park High School in 1968, and attended the Univ. of Maryland. He moved from Prince George’s County, MD to St. Mary’s County, MD in 1975. Gene was involved in social work assisting people with disabilities. He enjoyed reading, movies, and music in particular blues festivals. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. On Monday, August 27, 2018, Harry Dale Stone, loving father, passed away at age 61. Harry was born June 2, 1957 to Dwight and Zelda Stone. Harry took over Stone’s General Insurance after his father’s death and owned the business over 42 years. Harry would often lament that he did not have the charisma his father had as a businessman, however, anyone who knew him knew how much he cared for his customers. As the son of a reverend, Harry was an avid Christian and believed in helping others. Harry was an active member of the Gideons International in Lexington Park, MD. In his free time, Harry enjoyed visiting historical sites and collecting National Geographic Magazines. Harry was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister Anna Fannon, his children Dale Stone, Amanda Ralston, Melanie Horner, Jennifer Larkan, and Brian Beasley, and his 5 grandchildren. Born October 14, 1944 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Frances Virginia Johnson of Emmittsburg, MD and the late Vincent Reigle. Joe is survived by his children: Alyssa (Michael) Sullivan of Leonardtown, MD, James (Hannah) Reigle of Myrtle Beach, SC, Ronnie (Jason) Orr of Winchester, VA, Tina Reigle of Winchester, VA, Joseph (Tonya) Reigle, Jr. of Cambridge, MD, and sister; Ronnie (Robert) Moorman of Rocky Ridge, MD, also survived by 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, he was preceded in death by his infant son Robert Reigle and infant daughter Arianna Reigle and sister Barbara Reigle. Joe was the owner of A&J Painting for 48 years. Helen Cecile Clarke, 85, of St. Inigoes, MD passed away on August 30, 2018. Born on August 5, 1933 in Annapolis, MD, she was the daughter of the late Regina Dorr Mueller and Mathias Mueller. Helen was the loving wife of Harry W. Clarke, whom she married on March 28, 1953 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church Ridge, MD. Helen is survived by her children; Kathleen Groat (Robert) of St. Inigoes, MD, Debra Lynn Huett of St. Inigoes, MD, Kenneth Clarke (Lorie) of St. Inigoes, MD, Stephen Clarke (Karen) of Gilbertsville, KY, Jennifer Clarke (Jack) of Evergreen, CO, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. As well as siblings; Judy Raley, Loretta (Dee Dee) Orei, and Peggy Adam. She was preceded in death by her siblings; Mary Jean Smith, and Gerry Mueller. Robert Lawrence Pride, 84, of Leonardtown, MD passed away on August 25, 2018 in Charlotte Hall, MD. He was born in Frankfort, IN on February 17, 1934 to the late Howard Pride and the late Ivory (Susie) Randolph. Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. Robert joined the U.S. Navy in Washington, D. C., in December 1953 and worked as an Aviation Structural Mechanic with the Department of Defense. He served in Japan, California, and Texas and in 1970, he moved to Valley Lee, Maryland finishing his service at Pax River Base until his retirement on August 1, 1983. He continued working at Pax River for Dyna Corp until 2002. In addition to his parents, Robert was predeceased by his wife, Eiko Pride, (Nov. 2001), who he married in Japan in 1963; his father Howard Pride and Susie Randolph and his step mother, Eunice Pride: siblings, Rex Pride, Sharon Pride Floyd, and Phyllis Emery Perotta. Alice Mae Landreth, 82, of California, MD (formerly of South Norfolk, VA and Herndon, VA) passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018, at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD. She was born on October 13, 1935 in Norfolk, VA to the late William Oscar Hundley and Elizabeth Rich Hundley. On March 30, 1957, Alice married her beloved high school sweetheart, Stanley Lee Landreth in South Norfolk, VA. Together they celebrated over 61 wonderful years of marriage. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and she enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her family. She supported her husband when he was stationed in Europe. She enjoyed attending concerts and listening to the Big Bands. She was an excellent cook and delicious baker, and was known for her tasty squash pudding and spaghetti. Other hobbies included making ceramics and flower gardening. She was a devoted member for many years with Herndon United Methodist Church. Martin “Glenn” Sosbe, 74, of La Plata, passed away suddenly on August 24, 2018. He was the son of the late Brown Sosbe and Gladys Tolliver Willett. He was born in Kentucky on November 22, 1943, later moving to La Plata. Glenn was employed in 1968 with the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative where he worked for 43 and a half years, retiring in 2011. He worked with Christmas in April for many years. Glenn owned and operated a firewood business from 1978 to 1985. Later, starting Twin Grills Catering Service with his wife Maddie. Glenn’s favorite thing was his annual trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Glenn loved spending time with his family and friends and enjoyed helping others. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 39 years Marie Agnes “Maddie” Sosbe and granddaughter Kathy Keefer Fort. Terence Reynolds “Terry” Brown, Sr., age 80, of Port Tobacco, MD, died August 28, 2018. Terry grew up in Washington, D.C. but spent his summers in Long Branch, NJ with his lifelong friends, Pat and Raymond Sullivan. He graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School in 1955. Terry then attended and graduated from the University of Maryland. He later received a M.A. from the University of Central Michigan. Terry spent two years serving his country in the United States Army. In 1966, Terry met and married the love of his life, Mary Ellen. Soon after they were married, Terry and Mary Ellen began their love story in Bryans Road, MD. Terry began his 40+ year career as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative. In his spare time, Terry was a member of the Bryans Road Fire Department, where he was honored as a Life Member. Terry and Mary Ellen had three children, Terry, Mary Jane and Sean, and soon moved to La Plata, MD. Joseph Robert “Joe” Ullman, age 79 of La Plata, Maryland, died August 29, 2018 at La Plata Genesis Center. Joe was a Grocery Clerk and Meat Cutter for 30 years, having worked for Giant and A&P food stores. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He loved the outdoors, leather working, antiquing, and looking at old homes. He was a Redskins football fan and most of all loved being with the kids. He was the son of Joseph Edward Ullman and Agnes Mae Adams Ullman. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother, Andy Ullman and his sisters, Ann Ullman and Linda Welch. Charles William “Dickie” Pitcher, Sr. 87 of Port Republic, MD and formerly of Island Creek, MD, passed away on August 29, 2018 at his residence. Born December 8, 1930 in Island Creek, MD, he was the son of the late Elmer J. Pitcher and Isabel Emma (Wagner) Pitcher. Dickie served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from March 20, 1950 until March 28, 1953. He served in Germany in the 18th Infantry 1st Division and was awarded the Occupational Medal for service in Korea. Dickie was a supervisor for C&P Telephone Company for thirty two years, retiring in 1985 and a Funeral Assistant for Rausch Funeral Home starting in 1985. He was a founding charter member of the Optimist Club from 1968 until present, serving as President and Lt. Governor and was a member of the Beltel Retirees. Dickie was a member of the Democratic Central Committee from 1974 until 1986 and a member of the Governor’s Committee for Hiring the Handicapped. Raymond S. Smith, Sr., 76, of Owings, MD passed away August 30, 2018 at his residence. He was born May 6, 1942 in Washington, D.C. to Guy T. and Hazel J. (Herndon) Smith. He was raised in Camp Springs and attended Surrattsville High School. He worked as a laborer with John R. Whitman Construction, and after learning the carpenter trade worked as a carpenter and assistant superintendent with Prohaska Construction. Raymond and his brother Tommy also owned and operated S & W Construction, specializing in custom residential trim and finish wood work, and retired at the age of 62. Raymond married Patricia Ann Ellis December 7, 1963, and they lived and raised their family in Friendly and Temple Hills, MD, and moved to Owings in their retirement in 2007. In his leisure time Raymond enjoyed playing golf, watching PGA golf and “Wheel of Fortune”, playing daily MD Lottery numbers, and dining at Mexico, Thursdays and steakhouse restaurants. Charlotte Louise Alderson, 83, of Shady Side passed away August 31, 2018 at her residence. She was born July 21, 1935 in Washington, D.C., to William P. and Ruth (Sherry) Frank. Charlotte was primarily a homemaker and babysitter, watching over 100 kids. She was a member of the Annapolis Moose Lodge Chapter 661, St. James’ Parish and 7th District Rescue Squad. She was also a den mother for the Boy Scouts. In her leisure time she enjoyed reading Amish books, yard work, lighthouses and camping at Indian Acres. Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband Clyde William Alderson, Sr. and grandson Frank Alderson, Jr. She is survived by her sons Clyde W. “Billy” Alderson, Sr. of Millersville, Michael J. Alderson, Sr. and wife Sandy of Chester, MD, Frank Alderson, Sr. of Lothian and Mark Alderson, Sr. of Shady Side, 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, sister Peggy Catterton and brother Raymond Frank, both of Shady Side, and her beloved dog Rufus.
