Minnie Elizabeth McGinnis Necessary, “Minnie” 86, of Leonardtown, MD formerly of Mechanicsville, MD (Oakville) passed away on October 12, 2018 in Leonardtown, MD. Born on January 9, 1932 in Aylor, VA, she was the daughter of the late Addie V. Aylor Myers and Leo Raymond Myers. Minnie was the loving wife of the late Jack Buren McGinnis whom she married on February 9, 1950 and who preceded her in death on December 22, 1974. She was also the loving wife of her second husband, the late Frank Marion Necessary whom she married on May 3, 2008 in California, MD and who preceded her in death on December 15, 2011. Minnie is survived by her children; Jackie McGinnis, Sherry Turner, Marilyn Brown (Jim), Debbie Abell (John), Katy McGinnis, Jerry McGinnis (Tammy), Carolyn Mattingly-Moore (Tim) and David McGinnis (Dawn). 27 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Peggy Myers. She is preceded in death by her daughter Barbara McGinnis and her siblings; Ernest Leo (Buddy) Myers and Frances Ann Lamb (Bobby). Minnie loved her family first, then gardening, fishing and hunting. Patricia Ann (Norris) Housley, 67, of Summerville, SC (formerly of Leonardtown, MD) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 2, 1951 in Leonardtown, MD to the late John Berkman Norris, Sr. and Loretta Beaven Norris of Leonardtown, MD. She is a graduate of Towson State University. She was employed by Verizon Communications for 30 dedicated years when she retired in 2006. She loved to travel, play golf, and bunco. She also was an avid shopper and enjoyed buying gifts for friends and family. If she heard of a need, she was ready to go shopping to meet it. Patricia is survived by her husband of 27 years, Ronald Frederick Housley of Summerville, SC; her daughter, Sara McSherry (Horsey) Dunaway (Sean) of Mt. John Delbert “Jack” Wood, 89, of Mechanicsville, MD passed away on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. Jack was born on September 20, 1929 to the late James B. Wood and Marjorie Hamilton Wood, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Jack served as a technical sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952, with service in Korea, and received the Purple Heart. He then worked as an aviation mechanic at Andrews Air Force Base. Jack is survived by his wife, Beverly Wood; his sons, John (Ann) of Waldorf, MD; Jim (Laurie) of Stafford, VA; and Jeff Wood (Diane) of Mechanicsville, MD; his sisters, Maxine McKillip of Dewitt, IA, and Freda Kammermeyer of Rock Rapids, IA; and five grandchildren: Ron Wood, Kyle (Danielle), Kathleen (Curtis), Tyler (Hannah) and Joel. The family will receive friends for Jack’s Visitation on Thursday, October 18th, from 9 AM-10 AM, with a Funeral Service at 10 AM, at Brinsfield Funeral Home, 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. Jack Paul Bell, age 82, of Mechanicsville Maryland, passed away peacefully on the evening of October 10th, 2018. In the days leading to his passing Jack “Grandpa Jack” was surrounded by the comfort of his loved ones and took peace in knowing he was going home to be with the lord. Jack was born on February 5th, 1936 in Long Beach, California. In his early youth Jack was a cub scout where he gained an appreciation for hunting and fishing; activities that he continued to enjoy throughout his life. Early in his youth his family moved to Placerville, California where he attended school and worked on the family farm. When he was seventeen he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he and his older brother Ernest, sailed on the same ship transporting troops to Korea. He married his first wife Catherine Bell (now Cunningham) in 1953 and was blessed with four children, Sharon, Robert, Catherine, and Michael. Jack later married Alma (Fuller) Bell and proudly welcomed two step daughters Elaine Stevens and Carolyn Scorsonelli. Those who knew Jack knew of his incredible work ethic. Margaret Mary Huffman, 90, of Dameron, MD (previously from Landover Hills, MD) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 14, 1928 in Greenville, NC to the late Bernard J. Sweeney and Mary Elizabeth Lynch. She was the beloved wife of the late John Allen Huffman, Sr. for over 60 years before his passing in August 2007. She was a wonderful cook and delicious baker, and was known for her tasty barbeque. She grew beautiful flower gardens every year. She also enjoyed the beach and travelled every year to visit her sister in Florida. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends. She was a devote catholic and active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church and School. She made sure all six of her children attended catholic school. Dennis Richard Vaira, age 64, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday October 7, 2018. Born on August 4, 1954 in Washington, Pennsylvania, Dennis spent most of his life in Southern Maryland, growing up in Bryans Road, working for many years in Waldorf, and raising his family in La Plata. He was a proud graduate of Lackey High School and the University of Maryland. Dennis had a long career with the Barley Mortgage Company and later became a real estate developer and President of the Barley Vaira Company. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Patricia Coleman Vaira, and was a loving father to Michael (Lindsey) Vaira, Megan (Stephen) Mattingly, and Molly (Tom) Kelly, and proud “Pappy” to Savannah Vaira, Clark and Henry Mattingly, and Keira and Austin Greenhorn. He was preceded in death by his father Henry Vaira. He is also survived by his mother, Mercedes Vaira, brother David (Barbara) Vaira, sister Terri (Tony) Vaira-James, many loving in-laws, nieces, and nephews, and a host of long-time friends. Claudia Gardine Forbes, age 72 of La Plata, Maryland, died October 8, 2018 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland. Claudia enjoyed Bingo, sewing, travel, music and dancing. She was always helping others – her home was a safe haven. She was the daughter of Douglas Gardine and Ina Johnson Gardine. She is survived by her sons, John Engerman (Jo Ann) and Joseph Engerman; her daughters, Janis Bryant and Vitalia Forbes; her sisters, Kathleen Gardine, Verdia Smith, Marleen Gardine, Myra Gardine, Corinne Gardine, Lila Bannis and Ingrid Gardine; and a special niece, Shanika Phillip. She is also survived by six grandchildren. Friends received on Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 9:30 AM until time of Funeral Service at 11 AM at Raymond Funeral Service Chapel, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, Maryland 20646. Gladys Theresa Windsor, age 90, of Upper Marlboro, MD died on October 9, 2018 in Waldorf, MD. Gladys was a lifelong farmer and farm owner, as well as a CCD Teacher and member at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Baden. She was a seamstress that enjoyed reading and taking care of her nieces and nephews. Gladys liked to spend time outdoors, especially walking and gardening. She is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel L. Windsor and Jennie Burch Windsor; her brother, Samuel Joseph Windsor; and her sister, Frances Boswell. Gladys is survived by her sister, Emily Cecelia Gruss; and her nieces and nephews. Her visitation will be held on October 19, 2018 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM with a wake service at 7PM at Raymond Funeral Chapel. Her funeral mass will be on October 20, 2018 at 10AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Baden with a burial to follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Waldorf. Joseph “Big Joe” Nowak

On Wednesday, October 10, 2018, Joseph “Big Joe” Nowak passed away surrounded by his loving family. Joseph Charles Nowak was born in Blawnox, Pennsylvania on September 26, 1953, to Joseph Nowak and Charlotte Faye Roach. An only child, he grew up close to his family, especially his cousins, Jake and Elaine. A Boy Scout, he earned the highest rank as an Eagle Scout. He played high school football and graduated from Kane Area High School in 1971. Big Joe relocated to the Washington, DC area in early 1972 and met his future wife later that year. Joe and Linda got married on November 17, 1973. They started their family with a daughter, Nicole, born in 1976, and a son, Joey, born in 1980. He was a devoted, hard-working husband and father. As much as he loved fatherhood, his greatest joy in life was being a “Big Pop” to his seven grandchildren. Joe spent years as an engineer, retiring from the IRS building in New Carrollton, Maryland in December 2017. Carol S. Riegler, 75, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Born on February 1, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan, Carol was the youngest of four children born to the late Charles and Ruth Goodwin of Cookeville, Tennessee. Carol enjoyed her life to the fullest. She always brightened a room with her warm smile and inviting personality. She loved to laugh and surprised many with her “quick wit.” Carol loved to travel, visiting many locations throughout the U.S. and abroad. She particularly enjoyed frequent gatherings with her childhood friends as they reminisced, listened to 50’s music, and laughed about the “good old days.” Carol is survived by her five children, Eric, Tracie, Terri (Rex), Kirt (Miriam), and Kelley; five grandchildren, Brandon, Nicole, Ryan, Jonathan, and Haley; and her sister Jean McDougal. She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers Bill and Paul Goodwin. A gathering and memorial service will be held at Raymond Funeral Service, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646 on November 10, 2018. Howard George Burch, 62, of White Plains, Maryland, died suddenly at his home on Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Born on May 27, 1956, he was the son of the late Bertha Ann Buckler Burch and Russell Arthur “Skip” Burch, Sr. George was an electrician with Taylor Electric Company. He enjoyed hunting, playing cards, drinking coffee and hanging out with friends. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother James V. “Tiny Boy” Burch. He is survived by his siblings Russell Burch Jr., Philip Burch (Kathleen), Joyce McConnell (John) and Robert Burch (Jody); also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Marjorie Joan Charron, 74, of Waldorf, MD passed away on October 10, 2018 at SagePoint Senior Living. Marjorie was born on November 29, 1943 in Washington, DC to the late John and Marjorie Hughes. Marjorie was a Registered Nurse having worked at Physicians Memorial, Greater Southeast and Georgetown University Hospitals. Her greatest pride came from caring for the babies in the NICU. She ended her long nursing career as the school nurse at Dr. Samuel Mudd Elementary School. She was an avid Washington Redskin’s fan and a fan of all Washington sports teams; Nationals, Capitals and Wizards. She was a loving mother and proud grandmother. Helen Dorothy Lee (Dottie) Morton Calisti, age 82, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2018 with her family by her side. Dottie was born on August 9, 1936 in Independence, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Gwyn and Ruby Morton. Dottie was also preceded in death by her first husband, Ellwood Shaw; three siblings, Janie Morton Hamby, Fred Morton, and Paul Morton; and her son, Randy Shaw. She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Henry (Hank) Thomas Calisti; children, Pam Shaw Butler, Peggy Shaw Leathem, Penny Shaw Stradley [Jimmy], Ronnie Shaw [Debbie]; step-children, Tina Calisti Mudd [Jack], Tom Calisti [Denise], David Calisti; brother, James Morton; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Dottie and Hank were active members of the Greenridge Baptist Church in Clarksburg, Maryland. They cooked the Wednesday Night Church Dinners for 13 years. Vicky Lee Greer, age 63 of La Plata, Maryland, died October 14, 2018 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland. Vicky was a retired school teacher and vice principal with the Charles County Public School System for 20 plus years. She was a member of the La Plata United Methodist Church, where she attended with her parents. She enjoyed time with her grandchildren and her grand-dogs. She especially loved spending time with her best friend, the late Susan Grote. She was the daughter of Paul Swope and Eleanor Maxine Teat Swope. She is survived by her son, John Tyler Greer (Marie); her daughter, Christina Greer Ellis (Nicholas); her brother, Paul Swope (Darlene); and her grandchildren, Connor Wright and Carter Ellis. Ann C. Lake, 87, of Solomons, MD passed away on October 11, 2018 at St. Mary’s Hospice in Leonardtown, MD. Born on October 9, 1931 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Bowman and Mildred Cowdrick. Ann graduated from Anacostia High School in Washington, D.C. and attended Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. While participating in a youth group at the church, she met her husband William B. Lake. They have been married for almost 68 years. Ann was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Nancy Cowdrick Settlemire. In addition to her husband, Ann is survived by her three daughters, Karen Livingston (Michael), Janice Biennas (Dennis), and Joan Decker (George). She was grandmother to Steven (Colleen), Kathryn (Sergio), and Ryan (Angela). Her great-grandchildren are Grace, Sophia, Max, Cameron, Reese, and Logan. She is also survived by a niece and several nephews. Visitation with the family will be held at Rausch Funeral Home, 4405 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD 20676 on October 16, 2018 at 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at noon. Page Almas Stallings, 76, of Calvert County passed away October 10, 2018. He was born June 5, 1942 in Lusby to Warren and Louise (Cochran) Stallings. Page was raised in Calvert County and attended Calvert High School. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Page married Dorothy Hall and they lived in Prince Frederick. He was employed as a builder and later owned and operated Stallings Associates with his brother Tommy. Page enjoyed history, NASCAR, going to races, shopping, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Page was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Mae Stallings, sisters Constance Wood and Ann Frisco and brothers Clifton and Russell Stallings. He is survived by his daughter Kimberly S. Stallings and her fiancée Mark Mandley of Deale, stepdaughter Tracy Bowen-Gray and husband Michael of Prince Frederick, stepsons Donnie Bowen and wife Colleen of Huntingtown and Arnie Bowen and wife Sandy of Prince Frederick, grandchildren Austin and Alexa Catterton, several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brothers Tommy, Ronnie, and Roger Stallings, all of Huntingtown, and companion Georgia Grooms.

Francis Roland Windsor, 77, of Lothian, MD passed away October 11, 2018 at Washington Hospital Center. He was born October 23, 1940 in Lothian to Roland Moses and Mary Elizabeth (Howard) Windsor. He was a 1958 graduate of Southern High School. Francis married Charlotte Ann Griffith on May 27, 1961 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Francis and Charlotte built their home and raised their family on the family farm where Francis continued his work as a lifelong farmer. He was employed at Ford Lumber Company retiring in 2003 after 44 years of service. In his younger years Francis enjoyed playing baseball, softball and bowling. Later in life he enjoyed watching sports, especially those played by his grandchildren. He also enjoyed attending tractor pulls with his sons and grandchildren, gardening, crabbing, and family gatherings. Seth Wayne Beverage, 19, of King George, Virginia and formerly of Prince Frederick, Maryland passed away on October 9, 2018 in Prince Frederick, Maryland. Seth was a big hearted and very talented young man. He had a love for music that showed through his ability to play the piano and almost any instrument he ever picked up. Out going and adventurous, he also loved nature, the water, working on cars and 4 wheeling, as well as spending time with his family whom he loved deeply. Tommy loved life, and he was a good uncle and friend.
