Robert “Bob” Hood MSgt, U.S. Air Force, 83, of Great Mills, MD, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, passed away on June 3, 2022, in Avenue, MD. Born on May 10, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA, Bob was the son of the late Lendra Hornig and Raymond Hood. Bob was the loving husband of Nives Elvira Hood whom he married on December 3, 1960 in Pordenone, Italy. Bob is survived by his children Cynthia Hood of Avenue, MD, Patrick Hood (Kimberli) of Cobb Island, MD, his siblings Carl Hood and Edward Hood, both of Philadelphia, PA, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers Raymond Hood, Jr. and James Hood. Bob graduated from Thomas More High School in 1957, and served in the United States Air Force for 26 years, from August 1958 to October 1984, retiring in 1984. During this time, he was stationed at Incirlik Air Force Base Turkey, Lajes AFB Portugal, Aviano AFB, Ncirlik AFB, Kincaeloe AFB, and Pease AFB. Richard Gorman Swann, Jr., 47, of Piney Point, MD, passed away on Sunday,      June 5, 2022 in Washington, DC. Born in Leonardtown, MD on March 16, 1975, he was the son of Ricky and Paulette Swann of Piney Point, MD. In addition to his parents, Ricky and Paulette Swann of Piney Point, MD, he is survived by four sons Christopher Rhodes, Devon Buckler, Nicholas Buckler, and Patrick Buckler all of Piney Point, MD, his partner Mandi Bernazzani of Piney point, MD, and siblings Kenny Swann of Virginia Beach, VA, and Angie (Bobby) of Piney Point, MD. Rick had a kind, beautiful soul. He would do anything for anyone if it was in his power. He was passionate about what he believed and was not afraid to be different. He was an honest man. Four years ago, he was diagnosed with stage three throat cancer; he fought tooth and nail to survive it for his family. Because he was such a fighter, we were blessed with four more years with him. George Earl Hill, 87 of Lexington Park, MD passed away on June 19, 2022 at his home. He was born on February 23, 1935 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late William R. Hill and Jenny Hoffmeister Hill. On December 26, 1966, George married the love of his life, Genieva Hannah Hill in Indian Head, MD. They celebrated over 54 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in February 2021. He was a skilled carpenter, and jack of all trades.  He kept a well landscaped yard and detailed cars.  He loved dogs, camping and was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler’s football fan. George is survived by his children, Barbara Jean Miller (Arthur) of Brandywine, MD, Alice Victoria Sams of Lexington Park, MD, Brenda Lee Sydnor of Reading, PA, and Janet Lynn Clark of Leonardtown, MD; his sister, Dorene DeLuca of Pittsburgh, PA, and 13 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Genieva Hannah Hill; his daughter, Joyce Irene Wathen; and eleven siblings. Professor David Froom died on Sunday, June 19, 2022 at his home in Southern Maryland after a months-long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loving family. Dr. Froom served on the faculty of St. Mary’s for 33 years, helping to bring the Music Department to national prominence, a program that was the envy of other small liberal arts colleges. In the true spirit of the Liberal Arts, he was known to be welcoming to all students in his courses, whether musically gifted or not, and whether music majors or not. Many of the students whose lives he touched went on to successful careers in the arts or arts management and stayed in touch with him over many years. He earned his Doctoral degree from Columbia University, after which he spent a year at Cambridge University on a Fulbright Grant. Beyond St. Mary’s, Dr. Froom enjoyed a thriving international career as a composer, garnering many distinguished awards such as a Fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Kennedy Center Friedheim Award, an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, numerous Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council, […]

Linda Marie Buckler, 69, of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2022, surrounded by those she loved and adored. Linda was born on March 13, 1953, in La Plata, MD, to the late James Allison Robey and Ella Marie Robey. After graduating high school, Linda immediately began working as a Financial Secretary at La Plata High School, where she met her best friend, Christina Saylor. After 42 years, she retired in 2013 to spend more time with family and friends. Linda married Clark “Cotton” Buckler on December 4, 1981. With their marriage, Linda gained two beautiful stepdaughters, Tina and Brenda, and in November of 1984, Linda and Cotton welcomed their beloved baby girl, Brandy. They were happily married for 22 years before his passing in 2003. Linda was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend to many. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and always brought a smile to her face. She enjoyed organizing and hosting family gatherings, card games, and her traditional Thanksgiving dinner at her home. Ernest Lee Sigmon III, 44, of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away on December 29, 2021, from a tragic boating accident in Dares Beach, MD. He was born on October 2, 1977, in Washington D.C. to Ernest Lee “Spanky” Sigmon, Jr. of King George, VA, and Audrey Boelke Sigmon of Myrtle Beach, SC. Ernie is a lifelong resident of Southern Maryland. He is a 1995 graduate of Chopticon High School, where he was on the wrestling team as well as the varsity football team.  He continued sharing his passion for wrestling by coaching The Rampage Wrestling Team and St. Mary’s Hawkeyes. He also coached the St. Mary’s Braves club football team and the LaPlata Blue Knights.  He coached throughout his son’s playing career for both sports. After high school, Ernie began his career in the flooring industry. He was extremely skilled and owned and operated Ernest Sigmon, LC Flooring Company. He was the first installer certified for gymnasium floors on the Eastern Shore and traveled throughout the US teaching and training people on how to properly install these specialized floors. Robert Lee Owens, 91, of St. Inigoes, MD passed away on June 20, 2022, at MedStar Health: Hospice at St. Mary’s, Callaway, Maryland. Robert Lee was born May 19, 1931, in Leonardtown, MD to the late Robert Warren Owens and Myrtle McKay Owens. Robert Lee married Mary Agnes (Aggie) Owens on January 18, 1986, at First Friendship Church, Ridge, MD. They enjoyed traveling in the winter to Florida and his favorite pastime was cheering on the Washington Nationals. He loved his John Deere tractors and continued farming the family farm after his father’s passing. He also owned Owens Electric and RLO Construction before he retired. His enjoyment was an occasional cigar and sharing Crown Royal with the guys. Robert Lee was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, Ridge MD. He was active with the Ridge Volunteer Fire Department where he served as President, Vice President, and Board of Directors for several years. Fern Rose Ellen Marconi, 82, of Tappahannock, VA passed away peacefully on June 17, 2022, in Mechanicsville, MD with her loving family at her side. Born February 28, 1940, in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Maurice Riley and Katherine Lightner. In 1964, Fern married the love of her life, Robert Lee Marconi, Sr. Together they celebrated over 57 wonderful years of marriage before his passing on October 30, 2021. Robert & Fern Marconi moved from Baltimore MD to their first purchased home together in 1966 to Waldorf, MD, in a community called Country Club South. After many wonderful years together in 1996, they moved to their dream home in Surfside Beach, SC next to Myrtle Beach for 10 wonderful years, they then decided after spending time away from their children & grandchildren to move back to the area in 2006 to their final home in Tappahannock, VA where they lived for the past 16 years. Brenda Marie Gatton, 50, of Great Mills, MD died on June 22, 2022 at her home with her loving family at her side. She was born on July 23, 1971 to the late Walter B. Lamb and Nancy C. Lam Lamb of Leonardtown, MD. Brenda is a 1991 graduate of Great Mills High School. She was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, and sister.  She was a good cook and was known for her delicious chili. She was the life of the party and enjoyed cookouts and road trips.  The family was regularly travelling throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania.  She loved camping in Brunswick, MD and going to listen to local country and soft rock bands. Charles Alton Stone, Sr. 88 of Welcome, Maryland passed away on June 26, 2022 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, Maryland. He was born on October 3, 1933 in Leonardtown, Maryland to the late Joseph Vernon Stone and Mary Mildred Johnson. Charles was one of 9 children who grew up on a farm in Medley’s Neck, Maryland.  His siblings include:  Jack Stone (Betty) of Tall Timbers, MD; Barbara Logan of Callaway, MD; Jimmy Stone (Dottie) of Leonardtown, MD; Shirley Forsythe (Gene) of the state of California; Jean Nelson (George) of Leonardtown, MD; Linda Oliver (Jimmy) of Mechanicsville, MD; John Stone (Laura) of Leonardtown, MD and Doris Bean (John Louis) of California, MD.   Charles enjoyed farming and joined the United States Army in 1952.  He participated in the Korean War where he was promoted to a Sergant.  He earned numerous honors including a Good Conduct Medal, Korea Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, UN Medal, ROK Presidential Unit Citation, Merit Unit Citation and National Defense Service Medal.  When asked what did he do to earn these honors, he stated “I was just a good soldier”.  He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Ridge, Maryland.  He married Margaret […]

Francis Neale “Frankie” Tippett, 73, of Leonardtown, MD passed away on June 30, 2022 at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital with his family at his side. He was born on May 24, 1949 in Washington, D.C. to the late Elmer Francis Tippett and Margaret Jarboe Tippett. Frankie was a lifelong resident of Southern Maryland whose roots trace back to the 1600’s.  In his younger days, you could find him romping around the streets of Leonardtown getting into mischief. He never met a stranger and that served him well, whether he was at Tudor Hall, the Leonardtown Library, or a coin club meeting. His vast knowledge of St. Mary’s County history, as well as hundreds of photos, made him an immeasurable asset to anyone who was looking to trace their genealogy or just remember “the good old days”.  As a renowned historian, he brought great joy to others over the years with his stories, photos, and cheerful personality. Francis Herbert Russell, 92 of Leonardtown, MD passed away on June 30, 2022 at his home. He was born on January 20, 1930 to the late Theodore Herbert Russell and Agnes Violet Readmond. In 1961, Francis married his beloved wife, Dorothy Russell at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Leonardtown, MD.  Together they celebrated over 54 wonderful years of marriage until her death in May 2015. He was employed as a skilled carpenter for Elmer and Tommy Bailey. Upon retirement he enjoyed working for Food Lion for five years. He is survived by his sister, Mary Dryden of Leonardtown, MD, his nieces, Trudy Wible (Larry) of Leonardtown, MD and Wendy Jenkins (Paul) of Park Hall, MD; his great niece, Dr. Shannon Fitzgerald and his nephew Tyler Fitzgerald. Edith Ann Goldsmith Montgomery, 91, of Hughesville, MD, peacefully passed away on June 23, 2022. On March 10, 1931, Ann was born to George and Mary Goldsmith in Bryantown, MD. In 1949, Ann graduated from St. Mary’s Bryantown Highschool. After graduation, she worked as a clerk for the U.S. Government for over 36 years. Ann was passionate about her job and loved what she did for a living. On June 27, 1953, she married her beloved husband, Alexander Montgomery, and went on to have three children; David Montgomery of Claremont, NC, Elaine DeFelice of South Chesterfield, VA, and Lisa Doering of Charlotte Hall, MD. In 1986, Ann retired from Patuxent Naval Air Test Center. This gave Ann more time to care for her mother and pursue her love of sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She sang in the church choir for a good number of years and also enjoyed participating in the cleaning of the Church. She also made the Baptismal bibs, altar clothes, and repaired the altar server garments. David Michael “Dave” O’Brien, 75, of Mechanicsville, MD, formerly of S.E. Washington, DC, passed away on May 11, 2022 in Callaway, MD. Born on November 22, 1946 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Helen O’Brien and Edward O’Brien. Dave was the loving husband of the late Shirlynn O’Brien, whom he married on October 21, 1967 in Washington, DC, and who preceded him in death on November 6, 2019. He is survived by his children Heather O’Brien of Hollywood, MD, Michael O’Brien (Melissa) of Hollywood, MD, Shannon O’Brien of Mechanicsville, MD, Kyle O’Brien of Youngstown, OH, four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Dave graduated from Anacostia High School in 1966, and was a switchboard operator for Bell Atlantic for 30 years, retiring in 1996. He served in the United States Army from June 30, 1966 to July 29, 1969. He served in the Vietnam War and the Tet Offensive, and earned the Bronze Star Medal. Born on September 18, 1936, in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Elizabeth Ellis and the late Joseph Ellis. Joe was the loving husband of the late Mary Catherine Lowry Ellis, “Bitsy” whom he married on October 5, 1958, in Greenville, MS and who preceded him in death on March 15, 2016. Joe is survived by his children Beth Ellis D’Ovido of Bow, NH, and Joseph Ellis of Bushwood, MD, four grandchildren, Tara Ryan of Durham, NH, Kelly Ryan Fuscaldo of Greenwich, CT, Christopher Ellis of Bushwood, MD, and Laynie Ellis of Bushwood, MD, and his sister Pattie Powers of Rockville, MD. The midwife predicted the baby girl born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with a caul on April 6, 1938 would be gifted with clairvoyance. She may or may not have had “the gift,” but LuAnn Libert Miller did live a blessed and charmed life. Her mother, Eleanor Sutton Libert, was delighted to spoil her only daughter. Her two older brothers, Don Libert of Columbus, Ohio and Jack Libert of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, tormented her and protected her in equal measures. Her father, Bernard Joseph Libert, stressed the importance of education and encouraged LuAnn to work before marrying to prove to herself that she could make it on her own, which was unheard of in 1960. She graduated from Trinity College and worked as a teacher. Her brothers’ wives, Jo Libert (wife of Don) and Ronnie Libert (wife of Jack) became good friends and like sisters. She outlived her brothers and Jo, passing away June 20, 2022 in Leonardtown, Maryland with Ronnie now carrying the torch for their generation. Gerald Don Schmidt, 72, passed away Friday, June 24, 2022, in Memphis, Tennessee formerly from Ridge, MD. Gerald was a US Navy veteran and devoted Catholic, and co-coordinated the St. William RCIA program. He was also a devoted loving husband and love to fish. He earned an Associates of Science degree in computer science from College of Southern Maryland in 1986. He retired from the Department of the Navy CNIC in 2017.He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. Fred and Mrs. Kathleen Schmidt, son Stephen Schmidt, and daughter Erika Schmidt. Survivors include his wife Mrs. Elizabeth “Lisa” Schmidt, and sisters Rhonda Stokes and husband Bobby, Cecilia Dishman and husband JC. The family did receive friends Thursday, June 30, 2022, at Munford Funeral Home – Munford Chapel from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and Friday, July 1, 2022, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at St. William Catholic Church. Miedzinski (Randy) of Mechanicsville, MD, Mary Jo Cooper of Mechanicsville, MD, and David A. Cusic of Leonardtown, MD, six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Fredric “Fred” Charles Mueller, 79, of Charlotte Hall, MD, formerly of Prince Georges County, passed away on June 28, 2022, after a brief illness. Born on December 17, 1942, he was the son of the late Fredric William Mueller and Mary K. Taylor Mueller in Baltimore City, Maryland.  Fred graduated from Baltimore City College and went on to study liberal arts at the local community college before joining the Army National Guard Reserves.  He began his career in Printing and worked for 41 years in the career retiring in 2005 from the Baltimore Sunpapers. In 1972, Fred met Sharon Strohm and they married in 1972, having recently celebrated 49 years of marriage.  They started their family when son Jesse was born in 1975, followed by Joshua in 1978. In his spare time, he enjoyed camping, hiking, and working on older model cars. If you had a problem, he was the go-to man. Frances worked for the Charles County School Board as a food service worker for almost 10 years. Frances was passionate about the hospitality industry, and loved what she did for a living. She spent many years managing restaurants including Fin & Claw, Texas Ribs & BBQ, and Tantallon Country Club. She was an excellent cook, and you could usually find her recipes on the menu of her restaurants, including her Coleslaw and Bread pudding, along with many dessert recipes. She loved entertaining and spending time with her family, especially her granddaughters. In 1950, she met Pierre Smith, Jr. Frances and Pierre went on to have three children, Pierre (Buddy) Smith III of Mechanicsville, MD, Ronald (Jeff) Smith of Hughesville, MD, and Catherine Smith who predeceased Frances.
