Richard Willard Dean, 78 of Benedict, MD passed away July 3, 2014, at his residence with his loving family by his side. He was born on July 20, 1935 in Hollywood, MD to the late Willard Columbus Dean and the late Philomena Agnes (Tippett) Dean. Richard enjoyed sports and spending time with his grandchildren. He married the love of his life, Diane, on April 20, 1961. He retired from the Library of Congress as a Computer Operator. Richard is survived by his wife of 53 years, Diane Elizabeth Dean of Benedict, MD; daughters, Teresa Lynn Reed (Jay) of Indian Head, MD and Beverly Sue Dean of Colonial Beach, VA; sons, Richard Scott Dean (Mary Beth) of Bel Alton, MD and Thomas Paul Dean (Wendi) of St. Inigoes, MD; sister, Delores Buck (Robert); nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. SCPO Frank Barrington Ludwig, USN (Ret.) of Lexington Park, MD, age 74, passed away on July 6, 2014 at Hospice House of St. Mary’s in Callaway, MD. Born on July 1, 1940, in Wilmington, DE, he was preceded in death by son, Ray; father and mother Francis Earl and Nadine Allison Ludwig; and sister Jo Justis. On August 23, 1974, he married his beloved wife, Zoraida (Zody) Quinones Ludwig in Puerto Rico. They celebrated 40 wonderful years of marriage. Frank proudly served in the United States Navy from 1958 until his retirement in 1984 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. Upon retirement, he was employed for many years as a project manager at Veridian. With his extensive military career, Frank travelled many places all over the world, including Florida, California, Virginia, and — his favorite — Puerto Rico. Frank’s greatest pride and joy was his family. Donna Lee Conrad, 61 of La Plata, MD, formerly of Cheltenham, MD, passed away July 4, 2014 at Washington Hospital Center. Born December 4, 1952 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of John Delman Benton, Sr. and Henrietta Lucille Karis. Donna worked at Gus & John’s in Clinton, MD and Holiday Inn in NW Washington, D.C., but her greatest joy was being a homemaker, caring for her family. She tried to treasure every moment with friends and family by photographing every event, whether big or small, filling numerous photo albums. She made everyone feel special and had a very generous spirit. She made all holidays, birthdays, and special milestones a big deal, from the decorations to preparing a wonderful meal. She loved being in the sun, but her passion in life was her family and in her later years, her grandchildren. Joseph Merton Jarboe, 90 of Charlotte Hall, MD, passed away on July 4, 2014. Born August 31, 1923 in Mechanicsville, MD, he was the son of the late Elmer Raphael Jarboe and Elizabeth Etoyle Dawson Jarboe. Merton graduated from Margaret Brent High School and attended University of Maryland studying Agriculture. He was the owner of Charlotte Hall Lumber Company, manufacturing and distributing Southern, Appalachian and Northern hardwoods for domestic and export sales. Merton married Rebekah Mary Wilmer at St. Ignatius Chapel Point Church in Port Tobacco, MD on October 20, 1951. Together they raised four children and had four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Merton’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Rebekah, his son Lawrence Jarboe (Carlene), son Pere Jarboe (Martha), son Stephen Jarboe, and daughter Rebekah Guyther (David); four grandchildren, John Jarboe, Jodi Jarboe Distefano, Andrew Guyther, and Benjamin Guyther; and three great-grandchildren, Andrea Distefano, Ayanna Distefano, and Dominick Distefano. He is also survived by a sister, Barbara Ann McDonagh. Along with his parents, he is also predeceased by his sister Ella Maureen Bowling and brothers Paul Jarboe and Lawrence Dawson Jarboe. Service will be private.

Gerald Wilmot Stake, 66 of St. Leonard, MD passed away on July 6, 2014 in Prince Frederick, MD. He was born on January 19, 1948 in Chambersburg, PA to the late Edna Mae and George W. Stake. Jerry has been a businessman in the area since 1983 owning and operating several paint stores, most recently the Benjamin Moore/McCormick Paint store in Sunderland. Jerry had many interests, he was an avid car buff, a great mechanic, enjoyed NACAR, and he loved boating and fishing. He was a hard worker and a wonderful father and grandfather, who will be missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his long time girlfriend, Michelle Hutchinson. Father of Traci Whitfield and her husband Gary, and Alyssa Hall and her husband Michael, Logan Stake, Tyler Stake, Grant Stake, and Sumner Hutchinson. He is also survived by grandchildren Shauna Thomas, Skyler Whitfield, Aysha Whitfield, Riley Hall and Brady Hall and one great granddaughter Ciani Thomas. The family will receive friends at the Rausch Funeral Home, 4405 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD on Thursday July 10, 2014 from 11-1 PM. A Memorial service will follow at 1 PM. Interment will be private.

David William Hill, 87 of California, MD, passed away on July 6, 2014 at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Born on October 25, 1926 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Van Buren Hill and Louise Mills Hill. David was a World War II Veteran. David worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Washington, D.C. from 1946 to 1958. He worked at the Chief of Mails at The White House from 1958 to 1977. Upon his retirement he was the Chief of Mails. David enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. He was an avid Redskins fan. Joseph Henry “Joe” Adams, 84 of Great Mills, MD died July 6, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Born March 28, 1930 in Park Hall, MD he was the son of the late George and Sarah (Shepherd) Adams. Joe was a lifelong resident of St Mary’s County. He had many different jobs over his lifetime, such as milk delivery, dry cleaning, crabbing, oystering, and car salesman; however, his true passion was farming. Joe could be considered truly a renaissance man. He sold produce throughout the county and was known as “The Tomato Man”. Whether farming or selling cars, he had a heart of gold. Joe loved The Lord and would brag about how The Lord saved his life so many times. Joe told the best stories with animation and his full of life personality. There were no strangers in Joe’s life; only the ones he had not yet met. He was so proud and thankful to God for his daughter, Joyce, his son, Richard, and his wife, Pearl. Born August 12, 1976 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of Ernest Hilary Johnson, Jr. of Valley Lee, MD and the late Rose Marie Redman Johnson. In addition to his father Kevin is survived by his sister, Michelle Reeve of Severn, MD and his niece and nephew Olivia and Alex Reeve. Kevin graduated from Leonardtown High School in 1995 and the University of MD in 1999 with a degree in History. Kevin was a Claims Adjuster for MAIF; he enjoyed camping, traveling and listening to music. Cordelia Marie (Fenwick) Martin was born on June 11, 1961 and departed this earthly life on Friday, July 11, 2014. Cordelia was born in Saint Inigoes, MD to the late Charles and Anna Fenwick. During her youth, she attended Saint Mary’s County Public Schools and graduated from Great Mills High School in May 1979. After graduating high school, Cordelia pursued her passion and attended art school. Over the years, Cordelia held many positions such as at the Housing Department at Patuxent River Naval Air Test Center and the Housing Unit at Solomon’s Recreation Center. A car accident left Cordelia permanently disabled but she enjoyed crocheting for family and friends, watching the soap operas, dancing, and attending family functions. In addition to her parents, Cordelia is predeceased in death by her brother, Marvin Fenwick and her brother-in-law, James O. Dickens. Cordelia leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Terrell (Dana) of Raleigh, NC and Eric Jr. of Lexington Park, MD and daughter, Shaneakqua of Lexington Park, MD. Joseph enjoyed politics, socializing, coin collecting, shooting guns, boating, fishing, crabbing, swords, and the Medieval Era. He was an animal lover and very active outdoors. Mary Evelyn Goelling, 83 of Hughesville, MD passed away peacefully at Hospice House of Charles County, Waldorf, MD. Born March 10, 1931, in Hughesville, MD, she was the daughter of Joseph Elmer Stonestreet and Mabel Jenkins Stonestreet. A homemaker and lifetime resident of Hughesville and member of St. Mary’s Bryantown parish, she was an outdoor person who loved working and helping on the farm and tending the garden. She liked to crochet and read the National Enquirer and Star. Her special love were her grandchildren. Predeceased by her parents; husband Bernard Goelling in 2013; son, Bernard Goelling, Jr. in 2014, two sisters and seven brothers. Mary Evelyn is survived by her children; Francis A. Ralph Charles Burkhouse, 79 of Waldorf, MD, and formerly of Charlotte Hall, MD, passed away on July 10, 2014 at Hospice House of Charles County in Waldorf, MD. Ralph, known to his family and friends as “Burk,” was born on January 31, 1935 in Sparrows Point, MD to the late Edward W. Burkhouse, Sr., and the late Catherine Burkhouse. Ralph served in the U.S. Army and enjoyed a full and satisfying career as a Maryland State Trooper. He was a kind and gentle soul, loyal to family and friends, and possessed of an engaging charm and wit. He delighted in movies of all kinds and found great pleasure in his canine companions. He is survived by his beloved and loving wife, Karen Marie Burkhouse; his beloved sister, Patricia King; and a number of nieces and nephews. Elizabeth Cecelia (Huntington) Cairns Schetrom, 91, of Florida passed away on July 7, 2014. Betty, as she was known to her friends and family was born on June 18, 1923 in a farmhouse, in the little town of Hughesville, MD. She was the 6th child of what would eventually be 18 children born to Marshall and Della Huntington. Growing up on the farm was not easy but her memories of it seemed to all be of the fun she had with her siblings and extended family. At the age of 17 she moved to Washington, D.C. with her older sister to work. WWII was going on and D.C. was the place to find work and adventure at that time. What she found was the love of her life. Melvin R Cairns, Sr. Melvin was in the Air Force and when he was transferred to Pensacola, FL she soon followed him so that they could marry. Together they had three sons, Dickie Cairns, Eddy Cairns and Melvin Cairns, Jr. They eventually settled in the Southern MD area, where she grew up and raised their family.
