Thomas Graduated from Calvert High School in 2007 and worked at Ripple’s Service in Upper Marlboro for 7 years. He was also a Carpenter and did overnight stock at Giant Food. Thomas enjoyed volunteering his time as an Advocate to the Gift Program at St. John Vianney & especially liked traveling to the HeartWork Mission Camps. Thomas had many hobbies but most consisted of bicycling, lacrosse, going to the gym and spending time with his family, friends & fiance. Robert Eugene Fastnaught, Jr., 81 of Chaptico, MD, died on July 15, 2014 at home with his family. Born on January 9, 1933 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Robert, Sr. and Iva. Robert operated the family masonry business until 1998. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards and taking care of the family farm. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Carole Vivian and son Richard. He is survived by his children, Christine E. Fastnaught-Fox (Greg), Carla E. Torres, Robert E., III (Sharon), Stephen G. (Stefanie), William Matthew (Kerry), nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. Service and interment are private. John Owen Dennison, III, 78, of Clinton, MD went to be with God on July 12, 2014 at his home. John worked for the Maryland Department of Forests and Parks at Cedarville State Forest. He was the oldest living past Chief of the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department. He loved everything pertaining to fire fighting (volunteer and paid). He retired in 1981 from the Prince George’s County Fire Services as an Arson Investigator. He started out as a Dispatcher, moved up to Inspector and on to become an Arson Investigator before retiring in 1981. He also operated Dennison Country Market on the family-owned farm in Clinton. He loved being there seven days a week. When it was sold, that is when his health started declining and continued to decline until the day he passed. John was also a past Governor of Columbia Moose Lodge on Brandywine Road (same road he grew up on). He loved the Moose Lodge because he got to do a lot of cooking there. Dorothy Virginia (King) Ross was born on April 20, 1921 in Richland township, PA. She passed away on July 17, 2014 in Lake Placid, FL. She was the eldest of five children. Dottie grew up in Emlenton, PA. She attended Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, PA, where she was majoring to become a physical education teacher. In 1942 while attending the college, a group of Army Air Corps (pre Air Force) pilots were at the school for some training in the area. The Dean of the school asked some of the girls if they would be willing to be escorted to a school dance by the pilots. Dot was matched up with a young man by the name of Charlie Ross. A year later, they were married on May 13, 1943 in St Petersburg, PA. They had three sons, Charles R. Ross, Jr., David M. Ross, and Mark A. Ross. John William Hankla, 90 of Leonardtown, MD departed this life on Monday, July 21, 2014 at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. Born November 7, 1923 in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late John William Hankla, Sr. and Mabel (Statter) Hankla. John retired from the Singer Sewing Co. after 43 years. He had a very active life. John was a Duncan yoyo champion, historian and volunteer at Piney Point Light House. He was a coin appraiser for St. Mary’s County and gave talks on coins for over thirty years. John was an avid bridge player, a past president of the Silver Spring Exchange Club and a Master Mason for 70 years. Born December 14, 1938 in Middletown, CT, he was the son of the late Marion Elizabeth Schultz LaBarge and Louis Napoleon LaBarge. Mr. LaBarge is survived by his loving wife Beverly A. LaBarge, whom he married in East Hampton, CT on February 4, 1967. Children; Dorene L. Lindsay of Tampa, FL, and Lester L. Patricia Ann Penn, “Patti”, 78, of Lusby, MD, passed away peacefully, on July 22, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with ALS. Patti was born on October 15, 1935 in Washington D.C. to the late Ernest Raymond and Marion B. Chase. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Jimmy Penn, daughter, Vicki Hall, son Troy White, granddaughter, Melissa White, Grandson, Joey Hall, sister Lorraine Warder and her brother in law, Don Hoke. Patti and Jimmy owned and operated Patti’s Quick Shop on 231 in Barstow for 35 years before leasing it out to what was known as Dons General Store. Gerald David Crider, 77 of Lexington Park, MD passed away on July 20, 2014 at his residence. Born June 29, 1937 in Strasburg, VA, he was the son of the late John Samuel Crider and Cora Bell (Nicholas) Crider. Gerald served in the U.S. Navy from July 1954 to May 1974, receiving numerous medals. After his retirement, Gerald worked as a Project Liaison Officer for the Civil Service. He retired from the Civil Service in 1999. After his retirement, his daily routine consisted of having breakfast and visiting the Rod & Gun Club at the Patuxent River Naval Base where he was a long-standing member and where he held office. He was an avid sportsman, who particularly loved hunting and fishing. During hunting season he was busy setting up tree stands, blinds and baiting the deer. He was also known at the club for his expertise at playing Acey-Ducey, a dice game. Gerald was very competitive and was always out to win and to be the best in whatever he undertook. Born on December 11, 1936 in Wilmington, DE to the late Leroy Taft Walton and Hester Covington Walton. After graduating from Delaware High School in 1954, she attended the University of Delaware and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1958 and received her Master’s Degree in Education in 1965. A teacher by trade, she taught at Elkton High School until she pursued her interest as an Extension Agent where she met and married John D. Bailey, Jr. in January 1965. A resident of St. Mary’s County since 1970, she taught elementary school at The Calverton School in Huntingtown, Mother Catherine Spaulding School in Helen, and Father Andrew White School in Leonardtown, MD. Richard Sydney Cox, 69 of Charlotte Hall, MD passed away on July 20, 2014 at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dick, as he was known to family and friends, was born on March 28, 1945 in Baltimore, MD to the late Merle E. Cox and Jeanne Kraus Cox. Dick served 20 years in the Army, Army National Guard and DC Air National Guard and enjoyed a full and satisfying career as an Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Air National Guard and Martin State Airport. During his time as an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA he worked at Washington National, Raleigh-Durham and Memphis Airports. He retired from Federal Service in 2005. Dick enjoyed playing and watching baseball, shooting pool for fun and competition, spending time at the beach, being with family and watching his grandsons participate in their many sports and activities. David Andrew Young, 66 of Hollywood, MD, passed away of lung cancer on July 20, 2014, at the Hospice House of St. Mary’s County surrounded by his loving and devoted wife and daughters. David was an esteemed and valued employee of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant for 26 years. Debra Lee “Debbie” Dodson, 51 of Huntingtown, MD passed away on July 23, 2014 at Calvert Memorial Hospital. Born April 3, 1963 in Hyattsville, MD she was the daughter of Berlon L. Cooper of Bowie, MD and the late Peggy L. (Glascock) Cooper. Debbie graduated from Fairmont High School in 1981and attended Prince George’s Community College for one year. Debbie and Jim were married on September 27, 1986 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Greenbelt, MD. They moved to Calvert County in 1999 from Cheltenham, MD. After thirty one years working as a computer programmer for the IRS, Debbie retired in February, 2011. James “Buddy” Hunter Rowley, Jr., 24 of Mechanicsville, MD passed away July 23, 2014 as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. Born May 8, 1990 in Cheverly, MD, he was the son of James H. Rowley, Sr. and Tammy Lynn Rowley. Buddy worked as an apprentice for Comfort Control in Beltsville, MD. Buddy was loved by all and was affectionately known as “a lady’s man”. He was a coach for the Wolfpack Softball Team and enjoyed softball, football, watching the Washington Nationals, Duke Basketball and the Redskins. Joanne Camilla Bennett, 81 of Waldorf, MD, died July 25, 2014 at the Solomons Nursing Center in Solomons, MD. Born March 19, 1933 in Chicago, IL, she was the daughter of the late John Reiter and Caroline Klainoski. Joanne was much loved by her husband, children and grandchildren and will be dearly missed. After raising her five children, she went on to a career as an Administrative Assistant for Robert Price and Associates for another 18 years. Beyond being a wonderful mother, grandmother and wife, she also was a prolific artist, tatted lace, quilted, crocheted, traveled with Clarke and read extensively. Her many painting and projects adorn all her children’s homes.
