Everard Lee Rawlings, 80 of St. Leonard, Maryland passed away October 3, 2014 at Calvert Memorial Hospital, Prince Frederick, MD. Everard Lee was born in Prince Frederick, MD on May 8, 1934 to the late Frank Rawlings and Evelyn M. Dove. He grew up in Bowensville and was raised by his mother and Step father, Herman S. Bowen. He was an avid Ravens and Orioles fan. He is survived by his daughters Terry and her husband Bill Miller, Vicky and her husband Jeff Horsmon, and son Brad Rawlings. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Dale Elliott, Megan Horsmon and Cody Horsmon. The family will receive friends at the Rausch Funeral Home, 4405 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD on Sunday October 5, 2014 from 1-5 PM. A celebration of life will be held on Monday October 6, 2014 at the Broomes Island Wesleyan Church with Reverend Linwood Benton officiating. He will be laid to rest in Broomes Island Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Prince Frederick Fire Department.

Arthur Eugene Ashe, 50 of Clements, MD passed away on October 2, 2014 at his home. He was born on January 21, 1964, the son of Willard Rodman Ashe and Doris Lee Umphlett Ashe. Arthur was preceded in death by his father Willard Ashe and uncle Louis Sears. He is survived by his wife Julie; son William Ashe and daughters Peyton Ashe and Katie Hammonds; brother, Rodney Ashe (Brenda); sister, Cynthia Beebee (Dannie); aunt, Margaret Sears; sister in-law, Tracy Hammonds (John), as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins. Arthur’s hobbies were being a doting husband, motor cross, bull riding/rodeo, and playing golf. Arthur had always been in the roofing industry and owned his own business, Ashe Contracting for 10 years. He was currently employed with Elite Sheet Metal Works, Inc. A viewing will be held on Tuesday. Mary Ann Mattingly, 85 of Leonardtown, MD passed away October 3, 2014. Born on December 10, 1928 she was the daughter of the late Joseph Louis Edwards and Birdie Viola Davis of Leonardtown. She was predeceased in death by her husband James Maguire (Mac) Mattingly, Jr., her son David Robert Mattingly and her brother Joseph Louis Edwards, Jr. Mary Ann is survived by her three children: Laura Ellen Roberts (Michael) of Leonardtown, James Maguire Mattingly, III (Linda) of Leonardtown and Michael Edwards Mattingly of Great Mills, MD, six grandchildren: Kelly Lynn Roscoe (Michael) of Leonardtown, Kimberly Ann Lawrence (Ralph) of Chaptico, Jill Nicole Burrell (Joshua) of Huntsville, AL, Candice Michelle Hester (Nicholas) of Severna Park, MD, J. Maguire Mattingly, IV of Leonardtown, Jonathan Howard Mattingly (Leanne) of Leonardtown and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Richard S. Edwards of Leonardtown. Roxanne Elizabeth Tharpe, 49 of Great Mills, MD passed away on October 2, 2014 at her residence. Born March 4, 1965 in Leonardtown, MD she was the daughter of Kelly Jo Wood and the late Kenneth O. Buckler. Roxanne was a cook at Linda’s Café where she worked all of her life. She was married to the love of her life, Steven Rene Tharpe. Roxanne’s greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. In addition to her husband and mother, Roxanne is survived by her children, Steven Tharpe, Jr., Jenny Jo Tharpe, and Audrey Rose Tharpe, all of Great Mills, MD; sister, Gennie Hible, of NC; brother, Kenneth O. Buckler, Jr., of Lexington Park, MD; and six grandchildren. Victor “Vic” Gonzalez, 72 of Hughesville, MD passed away on October 4, 2014 at his residence. He was born on September 18, 1942 in Utuado, Puerto Rico to the late Felipe Gonzalez and the late Dehlia (O’Rama) Gonzalez. Vic had his own custom drapery business and enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved to bowl, watch golf and tennis, and was a fiend for the beach and warm weather. Vic also enjoyed working in the yard with his wife, Marykatherine. In addition to his parents, Vic is predeceased by his brother, Felipe L. Gonzalez; sister, Zoraida Pena; and grandson, Dominick L. Gonzalez. Vic is survived by his loving wife, Marykatherine Fitzpatrick Gonzalez of Hughesville, MD; his sons, Victor Dominick Gonzalez of Mt. Elizabeth Ann (Ricards) Delph McLaughlin, age 76, of La Plata, MD and formerly of Waldorf, MD passed away on October 5, 2014 at University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, MD surrounded by her family. She was born on January 29, 1938 in South Plainfield, NJ to the late Charles L. Ricards and the late Grace B. Ricards. In 1956 Elizabeth married Jerry Delph of Big Stone Gap, VA. They had four children. Her husband, a US Marine was tragically killed in action in Vietnam in April 1967 and Elizabeth was suddenly a widowed mother of four. She was a determined woman and a survivor and although it was not typical for women to be employed at that time, following the death of her husband, Elizabeth entered the workforce as an Avon sales representative. She successfully transitioned to the workforce while managing her family and also was very active in her community. In April 1968 Elizabeth was remarried to Francis Joseph McLaughlin, also a US Marine, from Philadelphia, PA and together they had one son. John Clifton Kaufmann, 63 of St. Mary’s City, MD passed away on October 3, 2014. Born on July 5, 1951 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Helen Lawrence Kaufmann and H. Clifton Kaufmann. John was the loving husband of Karen Lorenzi Kaufmann. He is survived by his children Carlyle Laurel Kaufmann of California, MD, and Holly Paige Kaufmann of St. Mary’s City, MD. John graduated from T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, VA in 1969 and graduated in 1973 from Madison College. He moved to St. Mary’s County in 1987. John was a founding member, Chairman & CEO of National Technologies Associates, Inc., Lexington Park, MD. He was a devoted husband, father, and family man. John was past Commodore of Corinthian Yacht Club, and was an avid boater and angler. Edward S. Johnson, 93 passed away peacefully of natural causes on October 6, 2014, in Solomons, MD. Ed was the 2nd child of Jacob M. and Helen M. Johnson, was born at a farm house in Pawnee County, NE, on 3 May 1921. Ed grew up in Pawnee County. His father was a sharecropper farmer, moving to a different farm each year; consequently Ed attended 8 different country schools during his elementary school years. He started high school at Table Rock, NE, but transferred to Pawnee City High School at the start of his sophomore year, and graduated in the class of 1939. Ed was a good student and won a regent’s academic scholarship to the University of Nebraska; but he never used this scholarship. He secured a loan from the Educational Foundation of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and enrolled at the Grand Island Business College, NE, in Jan 1940. In the fall of 1940 Federal Government was expanding in anticipation of war, so Ed took the civil service test for Clerk-Typist and scored 95. He received a job offer in the War Department and promptly accepted, since the salary of $120 per month was twice the salary […]

Anne Roarty Biggins, 69 of Lusby, MD died on October 6, 2014 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center after a two year journey with Lung cancer. She was born in Kingston, PA on November 4, 1944. She was educated at Ursuline Academy, Dunbarton College and Mary Rogers College before graduating from the University of Maryland with a BA (Speech Pathology) and an MA in 1969. That same year she married James Biggins, accompanying him on his tours of duty in the Navy. She worked as a Speech Pathologist in various institutions before retiring from Fairfax County Schools in 2001. Other accomplishments included serving as adjunct professor at Marymount and George Mason Universities, and a full-time instructor at George Washington University. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons David, Daniel, and Timothy as well as grandchildren Katie, James, Greta, Sam, and Teddy Biggins, whom she adored. She also leaves her siblings Mollie McMahon, Joseph Roarty, and Karen Roarty-Dansfield. Reuben Leroy “Skeets” Richardson, Jr., 91 of Mechanicsville, MD passed away October 10, 2014, which was also his 72nd wedding anniversary, at Genesis Health Care in Waldorf, MD. Born on February 3, 1923 in Richmond, VA, he was the son of Reuben Leroy Richardson, Sr. and Angela Hedges Richardson. He grew up in Edmonton, MD and worked in Space Management for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for 36 years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps in Italy. He has lived in Golden Beach for the past 33 years and has been enjoying his retirement. Skeets loved the outdoors, especially fishing, crabbing, boating and playing golf. He also liked to play bingo, duck pin bowling and special times with his family. In addition to his parents, Skeets was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Graham. Frederick “Leonard” Harding, Jr., 84 passed away on October 12, 2014 at Hospice House of Saint Mary’s in Callaway, MD. He was born on March 27, 1930 in Sandgates, MD and lived his entire life in Saint Mary’s County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Leonard Harding, Sr. and Lille Mae Harding (nee Downs), and his sister Louise LeBlanc. Leonard graduated from Margaret Brent High School on June 17, 1948. He started his electrical career in 1951 and earned his Master Electrician License in November 1965. He founded his company, Leonard Harding, Jr. Electrical Contractor, in January 1966 and operated the company for 24 years, providing electrical contracting services throughout Southern Maryland and providing employment and benefits to many employees during these years. Leonard always had the reputation as being a hard worker, an honest business man, and a caring employer, providing vacation time, health insurance, and retirement benefits while many similar employers did not. Debbie Lynn Cogar, 43 of Lexington Park, MD lost her battle with cancer on October 10, 2014 at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Born on October 24, 1970 in Camp Springs, MD, she was the daughter of June McClave and the late Stanley Grant. Debbie graduated from Leonardtown High School in 1989. In early years she volunteered as a candy-striper at St. Mary’s Hospital and an aid at Cedar Lane Nursing Home. Debbie loved people and was a devoted daughter and sister. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her children. Debbie is survived by her mother, June (Bart) McClave of Lexington Park, MD; daughter, Heather; son, Sean; brother, Christopher Grant of Leonardtown, MD; step-sisters, Kelly (Daniel) McAllister of Boone, NC; and Caryl McClave of Virginia Beach, VA; aunts, Beatrice, Cheryl and MaryAnn; and cousins Cathy, Darcie, Keli, Rhett, Bridget and Shelly. On Saturday October 11, 2014 before sunrise, God Our Father saw it fit to call Joyce Romaine Herbert from her labor to her reward at Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital. Joyce was born November 23, 1961 in Leonardtown, MD, to Wallace and Genevieve Berry. She was the sixth of seven children and received her early education in St. Mary’s County Public Schools. She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and served at PotterHouse Apostolic Church (formerly known as Greater Morning Star). Joyce graduated from Leonardtown High School in 1980. In 1981, she met the love of her life, Tyvie Herbert, Sr. To this union, two children were born, LaToya and Tyvie, Jr. Joyce was employed by various employers over the years; Library of Congress, BAE Systems, Pathways and was currently employed by Quantell Inc. in Washington, D.C. Joyce was highly regarded as someone who was fun and loving; never met a stranger. She loved her family, church family, and most of all, The Lord Jesus Christ.
