William Francis Butler, 49 of Mechanicsville, MD departed this life on Wednesday, January 21, 2015. He was the youngest son of 12 children born to the union of James Joseph, Jr. and Mary Ernell Butler. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Michael, Xavier, and James Joseph, III. Born in Leonardtown, MD on February 2, 1965, Billy received his education in St. Mary’s County from Banneker Elementary School, Margaret Brent Middle School, Chopticon High School, and the Park Heights Street Academy in Baltimore, MD. During his primary education, Billy was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, a form of juvenile cancer. He was treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD for several months and despite his ongoing health struggle he became a survivor. Billy’s employment history included: Lead Chef at his brother Michael’s fast food establishment, Just Burgers in Baltimore, MD; Support & Security, Patient Transport Technician, University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, MD; Maintenance & Home Improvement Contractor, Hyattsville, MD; Mail Room Clerk, Hill & Knowlton Publishing Co., Washington, DC; and Food Service Chef at, Charlotte Hall Veteran’s Home, Charlotte Hall, MD, Burt’s Diner, Mechanicsville, MD, and Kevin’s Corner Kafe, Leonardtown, MD, which was his place of […]

Paul Stanley Gilliam, 79 of Hughesville, MD passed away January 23, 2015 at UM Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, MD. Born December 16, 1935 in Maynor, WV, he was the son of John Paul Gilliam and Madge Faye Billups. Paul worked as a Mechanic for General Elevator until his retirement. He was a member at large VFW Post # 15021 in Baltimore and the AFL-CIO International Union of Elevator Constructors. He enjoyed road trips exploring the countryside, playing billiards, watching sports and doing crossword puzzles. Predeceased by his parents, Paul is survived by his wife, Roberta Gilliam; daughter, Sally Rhodes and three granddaughters, Kayla Stinson, Kacey Stinson and Taylor Stinson. Pama Lei “Pam” Barrett, 48 of St. Leonard, MD passed away on January 25, 2015 at Washington Hospital Center. Born January 30, 1966 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, she was the daughter of the late Ernest G. Enslow and Agnes Greenwood Sanders. Pam graduated from Frederick Douglas High School in Upper Marlboro, MD in 1984. She received her Associates Degree from the College of Southern Maryland and was attending the University of Maryland University College working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing. Pam married her husband, Barry Steven Barrett, on May 12, 2006 in St. Leonard, MD. She was currently employed as a Physician Relations Liason for MedStar, Southern Region. Pam loved spending time with family and friends, traveling, and camping with the love of her life, Barry. Pam is survived by her husband Barry Steven Barrett; her son, Jason P. McGraw of St. Leonard, MD; her step-children, Brandon S. Barrett and Rachel E. Robert Eugene Buck, 82 of Benedict, MD passed away January 27, 2015 at his residence in Benedict, MD. He was the son of late Parran B. Buck and late Sarah E. Buck. In 1959 Robert Eugene Buck was looking for a reason to get out of the house and serve his community. At the age of 27, after serving as a Medic in the United States Army during the Korean War, Robert worked as an Electronic Technician at the Naval NOL in Solomons before retiring in 1978. He then worked in the tool room at PEPCO, Chalk Point. He joined the Benedict Volunteer Fire Department and became a Lifetime Member for 56 years, serving as Chief, President and Rescue Squad Captain, VFW Post 8133, Prince Frederick and The American Legion, Hughesville, MD. Robert quickly attended basic first aid, emergency medical technician and basic firefighter through the University of Maryland to improve the response capabilities of the department. He unselfishly continued to take classes repeatedly to ensure the success of others in the department. Sharon Diane Keener, 66 of Hughesville, MD passed away on January 27, 2015 at her residence. She was born on April 26, 1948 in Florida to the late Walter Braswell and the late Georgia Cooke Braswell. Sharon worked for Davis Antenna for 20 years as Office Manager. When she moved to Florida, she was Office Manager for Florida Pest Control for 2 years before she retired. Sharon loved to work in her yard and was an amazing decorator. She loved cats, especially her “baby” Majic. Sharon is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, David R. Keener; two children, Kenneth Keener and Wendy VanHoozier (Johnny); brother, Gary Braswell; sister, Joyce Saunders; and three grandchildren, Brandon, Katie and Emily VanHoozier. William “Pop” Michael Flynn, Jr., 75 of Indian Head, MD died on January 27, 2015. He was born on October 11, 1939 in Washington, D.C., to the late William M. Flynn, Sr. and the late Vivian M. Flynn. Pop is survived by his children, Billy Flynn (Tammy), Michael Flynn (Daphne), Michele Gilroy (Dennis), Victoria Brumbaugh (Dan) and their mother, Barbara Adair, as well as 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Pop was always happy. He loved spending time with his grandkids and enjoyed fishing, playing the lottery and horse-racing. He was a big Redskin’s fan. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 1, 2015 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, LaPlata, MD. Raymond Vernon Johnson, 84 of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away January 26, 2015 at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 9, 1930, he was the sixth child of nine born at his home in Oraville, MD to the late Francis Vernon Johnson and Annie Myrtle Williams Johnson. Raymond was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. He attended St. Joseph’s School in Morganza, MD. As a young child he suffered a childhood illness in which he was not expected to survive. In the early 1950’s he went to work at the Federal Ordnance where he tested rockets for the Korean War Conflict. On December 2, 1955, he married his beloved wife, Mary Eleanor Tippett Johnson at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Together they celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage together. He spent the next 53 years working as a carpenter, building custom homes until his retirement in 2000. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, dancing, playing cards, slot machines, listening to Bluegrass and old country music. He enjoyed old farm equipment steam engines. She is preceded in death by her brother, Larry Luttrell, Jr.; step-sister, Kelly Shifflett; father-in-law, Michael Dennin; and brother-in-law, Brian Dennin. Diana is survived by her mother, Rose Fuchs; father, Larry Luttrell and his wife, Linda Luttrell; husband, Billy Dennin; daughter, Lauren Dennin; step-brother, John Shifflett (Karen); sister, Tina Clements (Kenny); mother-in-law, Margaret Dennin; brother-in-law, Stephen Dennin; niece, Jessica Clements; and nephew Bradley Clements. Diana was a Permit Specialist/Right-of-Way Agent with the Charles County Government. Richard, “JuJu” Armstrong, 74 of Great Mills, MD passed away on January 28, 2015 at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD. He was born on June 28, 1940. JuJu enjoyed playing the guitar, social activities, exercising and sharing meals. He looked forward to attending church services and St. Mary’s Adult Medical Day Center. JuJu is survived by his brothers, George Armstrong of Waldorf, MD; sister, Geraldine Armstrong of Lexington Park, MD; uncle, William Armstrong of 7th District, St. Mary’s County; and his caregivers, Ola May Carter and Frederick Carter who he lived with for 27 years of St. Inigoes, MD and also survived by his caregiver, Tess. Nelson, 93 of Lusby, MD passed away on January 28, 2015 at her residence. Born November 21, 1921 in Karlsborg, Sweden, she was the daughter of the late Gustaf Carlsson and Ester (Soderman) Carlsson. Beth graduated from Karlsborg High School in 1938 and graduated from the Swedish Red Cross College in 1948. Beth was a registered nurse in Stockholm, Sweden for thirteen years, retiring in 1957. She was a veteran of the Swedish Armed Forces from 1952 until 1956 and worked at the United Nations Nursing Center for one year. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and restoring antiques. Beth married her husband, Jimmie J. Nelson on July 14, 1956 in Oklahoma City, OK. She was a member of Crossroads Christian Church, St. Leonard, MD. Beth is survived by her husband, Jimmie J. Nelson; children, Paul C. Nelson of Lusby, MD and Amy E. Stewart (Paul) of Fairfax, VA; and grandchildren, James Nelson of Norman, OK, Mary Nelson of Madison, WI and Dean and Tyler Stewart. Nancy Mudd Roper Hayden, 74 of Waldorf, MD, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. She was born on December 12, 1940 in La Plata, MD and was the daughter of the late Joseph Burch Mudd and the late Helen Louise Simpson Mudd. She was preceded in death by Bronce Lafayette Roper. Nancy was a caring, loving wife and mother but her true joy was being a grandmother. She loved spending time tending her flower gardens. She was a descendant of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd and took great pride in her and her husband Allen’s dedication to the Dr. Mudd House Museum. She was involved in every aspect of the Mudd House Museum, a long-standing member of the Board of Directors as well as Curator. Nancy worked for the federal government before becoming a travel agent with Action Travel until her retirement. Born on December 21, 1924 in Morganza, MD, she was the daughter of William Douglas and Ida Russell Morgan. Emma was preceded in death by her husband William Carroll Tucker and her grand-daughter Kim Tucker. Patricia Esther Yates, 55 of Lexington Park, MD, passed away January 31, 2015 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 28, 1960, she is the daughter of Karen Elinor Gilbert Brobst of Lexington Park, MD and the late Thomas Hagen Brobst, Sr. Patty was a 1979 graduate of Great Mills High School. She proudly served in the Army Reserve from 1980 to her honorable discharge in 1986. In August 1988, she married her beloved husband, Jack Yates in Pensacola, FL. Together they spent 32 wonderful years together. Patty was a devoted and loving wife. She travelled the world with Jack as he supported the Navy, and she also worked for several years as a Supply Specialist. Patty was a homemaker, and also worked several part time jobs. Patty travelled extensively, enjoying Hawaii, Kuwait, the Grand Canyon, Amsterdam, Arizona, and family vacations to see her extended family in Michigan and Washington state. June Marie Simms, “June Bug”, 80 of Lusby, MD, formerly of College Park, MD passed away on February 2, 2015 at Solomons Nursing Center. She was born on May 17, 1934 in Washington, DC to Cecil and Mary “Louise” Cave. On July 20, 1950 in La Plata, MD June married her “one and only love”, James E. Simms, Sr. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her favorite past time was crocheting for her family and they were never without new beautiful blankets, hats, and/or scarves. June was preceded in death by her father, Cecil Cave, her mother, Mary “Louise” Cave, and her sister, Dorothy Sauls. June is survived by her devoted husband, James Simms, Sr.; her children, James Simms, Jr. (Jennifer) of Delaware, Robert Simms of MD, Judith Thayer of WV, Michael Simms (Tina) of MD and John Simms of FL; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and her brother, William Cave of WV. He was educated in the St. Mary’s County School System; graduating from Chopticon High School in 1992. He was a very caring and loving son, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend to many. Michael enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and spending time at the race tracks.
