John Trant Krauss, 51, of Dunkirk passed away July 30. He was born May 9, 1962 in Columbus, OH to Robert Eugene and Patricia (Trant) Krauss. John moved with his family to Newburgh, NY, Pittsburg, PA and settled in Laurel in 1971. They later moved to Wilmington, DE, where he attended public schools. He entered the United States Navy in May 1981, and was honorably discharged in 2005 as a Chief Petty Officer. While serving, John earned the Navy & Marine Corps, National Defense Service, Expeditionary, Southwest Asia Service and Kuwait Liberation Medals, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, among many other medals and awards. Upon his discharge from the military John was employed by the US Navy department as a program analyst. He married Deborah Anne Ollis on August 5, 1995 and they lived in Edgewater and Alexandria, VA, and have lived in Dunkirk since 2002. John was a member of First Lutheran Church of Calvert County. In his leisure time John enjoyed history, especially naval military history, reading crime novels, and animals. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his daughter, Ruby. George “Ronnie” Millar 72 of Indian Head died on July 31 in La Plata, MD. He was born on August 25, 1940 in La Plata, MD to the late Thomas W. Millar and Rosalie Jameson. He is also predeceased by his daughter Melissa Millar Cusick, and his brother Thomas Glenn Millar. He is survived by his daughter Marla Wustner and her husband Joe, sisters Jean Gangawerr and her husband Bob, Joan Dill and her husband Jerry, grandchildren Michael Kranke and his wife Jenna, Josh Wustner and his wife Sarah, Zach Wustner and his wife Tara, great granddaughters Lily and Isabel Kranke, Hannah Wustner and Ava Wustner sister-in-law Sherrie Millar and numerous nieces and nephews. Ronnie was in the U.S. Army, facilities Maintenance Supervisor for the Charles County Government Buildings and retired as a Self-employed Heavy Equipment Operator. He loved fishing, being outdoors and spending time with his family. He was also a past member of the Ironsides Volunteer Rescue Squad. Benedict I. “Dickie” Aud, 90 of Leonardtown died July 29 in Leonardtown, MD. Born Sept. 24, 1922 in Valley Lee, he was the son of the late Michael I. Aud and Agatha Aleene Matthews. Dickie is a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. He was a member of the Second District Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors and helped to establish and build the Second District Volunteer Fire Department in Valley Lee, MD. He proudly served in the United States Navy from November 11, 1942 until his honorable discharge on April 29, 1952. After his military service had ended he turned his passion for carpentry into a career, establishing his own construction company. He took great pride in the houses he built, including his own lifelong home. In his free time he built many beautiful doll houses for his daughters and granddaughters. In addition to carpentry, his pastimes included travelling with his wife, crabbing, and playing cards. The two things he loved most in the world were a full belly and giving to his family (which is why he loved the holidays.) Rosemary Louise Quinn Snead of Golden Beach died Tuesday, July 30 at Georgetown University Hospital. She was 82. Mrs. Snead was born on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1931 at the old Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of Michael T. Quinn, an Irish immigrant, and the former Louise E. Becker, who was of German ancestry. Mrs. Snead grew up in the District of Columbia and its suburbs, the eldest daughter in a family of six children. As the eldest girl, she was frequently given the task of taking care of her younger brothers and sisters. She graduated from Anacostia High School in 1949. While still a high school senior, she was recruited to work as a stenographer for the federal government after graduation. Mrs. Snead began working for the Central Intelligence Agency in 1949. As a federal employee, she also worked at the Post Office Department and the Census Bureau. In 1950 she married Charles L. Snead and continued to work for several years, but her real passion became family, motherhood and homemaking. The couple lived with their young children in Hyattsville until 1965 when they moved to Golden Beach. Barbara A. Livingston, 79, of La Plata, died on Sunday, August 4, at the Hospice of Charles County. Her family is blessed to have had 8 wonderful years with her following her diagnosis of ovarian cancer. A native Washingtonian, she was the daughter of the late Rena and Holland Yates. She is survived by her loving husband, William G. (Reds) Livingston. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in November 2012, having met and fallen in love when he was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base. Barbara loved being a mother and grandmother to her four children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She is the beloved mother of Deborah Sharpe (Frank), Donna King, Michael Livingston (Pam), and Diane Oliver (Terry), devoted grandmother to Kristen Midgett, Kimberly Livingston, Emily and Matthew King, Pamela and Amy Oliver, and Katherine and Natalie Sharpe, and great-grandmother to Ryan Ball, Elijah Larsen and Charlotte Midgett. Heum Cheon Kim, 85 of Piney Point died August 3, 2013 at her home with her loving family by her side. Born June 29, 1928 in Seoul, Korea, she was the daughter of the late Chido Lee and Poksoon Kim. Heum celebrated 37 years of marriage to Yongsik Kim before his passing in 1991. Heum enjoyed serving in her home church, getting together with her friends and family, growing vegetables in her garden and playing with her dog companion named Binki. Heum is survived by her daughters, Micha Duquette of Yorktown, VA and Eunhee Kim of Piney Point, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Gay Marilyn Neven, 57 of Leonardtown passed away on August 2 at her home. Born August 2, 1956 in Suffern, she was the daughter of the late Walter R. Conrad, Jr. and Ethel (Perry) Conrad. Gay was a resident of St. Mary’s County for fourteen years after moving from Norfolk, VA where she was stationed aboard the USS Enterprise. She served in the United States Navy from 1978 to 1998. Gay worked as a Logistician for the Department of Defense. She was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Fleet Association, as well as the Church of Christ in California, MD. She loved her wine and going to winery’s, cooking, enjoyed riding horses, and especially loved her children, family, and her new grandchild. Gay is survived by the love of her life, Nicholas J. Marvin Ardell Raley, 58 of Lexington Park died August 2 at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD. Born Sept. 20, 1954 in Leonardtown, MD, he is the son of Burton Benedict Raley of Lexington Park, MD and the late Frances Florine Hayden Raley. Marvin is a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. He is a graduate of Great Mills High School. On Sept. 30, 1983, he married his beloved wife, Mary Lee (Lee Lee) Raley. Together they celebrated thirty wonderful years together. He was employed by Burch Oil Company as a Car Wash Manager. He was a softball enthusiast and loved all aspects of the sport. He spent many happy years playing, coaching and umpiring the game. One of his favorite destinations was the Brass Rail Sports Bar. He always cheered on his favorite teams, the Washington Redskins, the Baltimore Orioles and the Maryland Terrapins. Smiley Charles Bowen Swann, 61, of Lusby passed away on August 4 at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD. He was born on Nov. 13, 1951 in La Plata, son of the late Charles Bowen Swann and the late Nancy Patricia (Gardiner) Swann. Smiley enjoyed being around people, sharing in their lives and helping out whenever he was needed. A dedicated pet owner, Smiley loved all his dogs, especially his “little girl” Luna, a pug. Smiley enjoyed watching movies; his favorite actress was Marilyn Monroe, and he liked old cars, especially Cadillac’s and Buicks. At an early age Smiley worked at a family-owned Mobil Station in Waldorf, MD. Later, Smiley worked as a salesman, and before his retirement he was a caregiver for individuals with disabilities as well as an employee of Hospice of Calvert County. Smiley is survived by his partner, John P. Crampton of Lusby, MD; two brothers, William Francis Swann and Frederick Joseph Swann (wife, Kim); one sister, Patricia Ann Swann; and many other relatives and friends. Katherine Augusta Reynolds, 97, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Greenbelt passed peacefully at her residence August 4. Born Sept. 1, 1915 in Union City, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Michael Bianchine and Katherine Schiblick Bianchine. Katherine lived in Greenbelt, MD for 67 years and worked as a registered nurse for 40 years in the medical practice of Dr. Wodak Winetraub and Associates in Greenbelt, MD. She was a member of the Golden Age Club in Greenbelt. Katherine is survived by her daughter, Patti Imler of Mechanicsville, MD and sister, Lucille Lang of Brooklyn, NY; 2 grandchildren, Peter and Michael Imler and 6 great grandchildren. Florence Nellie Fleet, 77, of Nags Head, NC, formerly of St. Leonard passed away peacefully on August 4 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born Jan. 2, 1936 in Washington, D.C. to Charles and Dorothy (Tawney) Nashwinter. She was the beloved wife to Robert L. Fleet, who passed away June 6, 2007. She is survived by her sister Blanch Midkiff, three children, Debra Jean Munnelly and husband John of Nags Head, NC, Michael W. Benton and wife Tina, of North Beach and Debra L Emery of Chevy Chase. Also surviving are grandchildren whom she loved so much, Katherine and Nick Fertal, Adria Benton, John and Johanna Munnelly, Matthew and Jamie Emery, Daniel Emery, Timothy Emery and Cindy Tayloe, and Michael W. Benton, Jr. and great-grandchildren, John Michael Fertal, Hayden Fertal and Juliana Emery. Florence will be truly missed and always loved by many. William Irvin “Billy” Revell, 71, of Friendship passed away August 6 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. He was born Nov. 18, 1941 in Friendship to B. Frank and Irene (Crosby) Revell. Billy was educated in South County at Tracey’s Elementary, and graduated from Southern Senior High School in Lothian in 1959. Billy held several jobs over the years, Brownies Service Center in Deale, Jacob’s Peterbilt in Tuxedo, International Harvester Company in Tuxedo and Richmond, Southern Maryland Cable in Tracy’s Landing and Baldwin’s Service Center in Annapolis. On June 30, 1962, he married Bonita “Bonnie” M. Nieman and they made their home in Friendship. In 1984, he started his own auto repair business, “The Greasy Wrench” in his back yard and worked there until last year when he was forced to close due to health issues. Billy served in the United States Army from May 12, 1966 to May 10, 1968, earning the National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooters Badge Rifle. He purchased a 1941 Oldsmobile Business Coupe several years ago and could be seen on Friday evenings at the North Beach car show. He also participated in local parades. Annie Evelyn Gurley, 76 of Lexington Park, MD died August 9, 2013 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Born April 1, 1937 in Carroll County, TN, she is the daughter of the late Arthur E. Davis and Jessie Lee Pugh Davis. Annie married her late husband, Billy Gene Gurley on October 18, 1953. They spent 55 wonderful years of marriage together before his passing in 2008. She was an avid woodworker. She was extremely skilled and made many beautiful pieces including, entertainment centers, desks, lighthouses, ducks and many others. She also enjoyed cooking and gardening. However, her greatest love was spending time with her family. When her grandchildren were younger she provided day care for them while their parents worked. Her love for her family was infectious. Annie is survived by her daughters, Vicki Lynn Vail Aldridge (Paul Joe) of Lexington Park, MD and Robin Connelly (Russ Brown) of Compton, MD; her grandchildren, Valerie Vail (Mike) of Park Hall, MD and Ford Connelly (Stephanie) of Waldorf, MD; seven great grandchildren; and his brother, Ernest Roy Davis (Shirley) of Jackson, TN. Moneta Jo Strickland, 32 of Mechanicsville, MD died August 9, 2013 in Mechanicsville, MD. Born December 21, 1980 in Washington, D.C., she is the daughter of Thelma J. Strickland of Mechanicsville, MD and the late Reubin Strickland. Moneta began travelling with her parents at the age of three, beginning with the Philippines and then to California. In 1992, she returned to St. Mary’s County attending Leonardtown Middle School, Leonardtown High School and Dr. James Forrest Technical Center. She is a 1998 graduate of Leonardtown High School. Moneta graduated from Shenandoah University with a Degree in Biological Science in 2006. In 2008, she earned her Master’s Degree in Public Heath from Walden University. In 2011, she graduated from Montgomery College School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She was currently employed by MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital as a Registered Nurse in the Telemetry Unity. She was loved by all her co-workers and patients. She was also a consultant for Tastefully Simple. Moneta was a member of the St. Joseph’s Ladies of Sodality. Born October 15, 1927 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Emlin Robert Toole and Victoria Elrod Toole. Robert owned and operated the Atlantic Venetian Blind Company in Clinton, MD. He loved to fish and crab and being a pilot, he enjoyed flying . He was a family man who especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Robert is survived by his wife, Margaret Jean Benson Toole and his children Nancy Renninger and husband Don, and Ron D. Joseph “Donald” Cooksey 86 of Pomfret, MD died August 9, 2013 in LaPlata, MD. Donald was born on March 8, 1927 in Washington, DC to the late Eleven and Ethelyn Cooksey. He is also predeceased by his beloved wife Pearl Louise Cooksey, brothers Everett, Harold, and Norris Cooksey, and his sister Doris Watson. He is survived by his sons Dennis Cooksey, David Cooksey (Mirella), daughter Susan Martin (George), grandchildren Vikki Dietzel (Danny), Karie Amos (Donny), Ginger Kamrath (Jeff), Joey Martin, and Michelle Maines (Craig), great grandchildren Dalton Amos and Landon Maines. Donald served in the US Army from October 5, 1946 until March 4, 1948 receiving the WW II Victory Medal and Army Occupation Medal. He retired from the Washington DC Fire Department as Battalion Chief. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, golf and baseball. Jacob “Jack” Franklin Behr, 77, of Mechanicsville, MD., died peacefully on August 10, 2013 at the St. Mary’s County Hospice House in Callaway, MD. Born on July 4, 1936 in Baltimore, MD., he was the son of the late Jacob John and Marie Julia Hillebrandt Behr. He was the loving husband of Sylvia Y. Behr, whom he married in St. Jerome’s Church in Baltimore, MD on January 26, 1956. He is survived by his brother, Leo Behr and his wife Joann of Abingdon, MD., four sister in laws; Linda Sullivan, Patty O’Neill, Dorothy Simon, and Jeanne Szymborski, one brother in law; Joseph Van Kirk and 15 nieces and Nephews. Jack was born and raised in Baltimore, MD., and attended Patterson High School. He served with the Maryland National Guard from 1956 to 1964. Jack and Sylvia loved St. Mary’s County and spent almost every weekend here. In 1967, they purchased the property where they currently reside in Mechanicsville, MD., and continued to commute every weekend. Jack worked in the clothing industry for I.C.
