Bragg AFB, SC, he is the son of Roberta and William Garman of Upper Marlboro, MD. Mike is survived by his wife Cheryl Garman of Mechanicsville, MD, whom he married on April 25, 1981 in Mt. Calvary Catholic Church, in District Heights, MD, children; Billy (Heather) Garman of Columbia, SC, Gary and David Garman both of Mechanicsville, MD, siblings; Debby Garman of Baden, MD, and Kevin Garman of Prince Frederick, MD. Mike graduated from Suitland High School in 1977, he was a truck driver. The family received friends on Monday, August 12, 2013 from 10:00AM to 11:00AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A., Leonardtown, MD. Joan Shirley Dale, 82, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Forestville, passed away on August 11, 2013, at her residence. Joan was born on Sept. 27, 1930, daughter of the late Frank L. Taylor and the late Violet L. (Tippett) Taylor. In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her husband, William H. Dale Sr. and her two sons, William H. Dale Jr. and Timothy W. Dale. She worked for Stone & Straw Company in Maryland for thirty years. She was a dedicated factory worker and was late for work only ONCE in her entire career. Jokingly her boss, Tommy, bought her a Mickey Mouse watch so she would never be late again. Joan loved playing Bingo and enjoyed browsing around the many local antique and thrift stores. Joan is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jenifer T. Dale of Mechanicsville, MD, four nieces, three nephews, numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews and many friends. Joan “Joanie” Johnson, 65 of Leonardtown died on August 10, 2013 at Chesapeake Shores Nursing Home in Lexington Park. Born July 6, 1948 in Montreal, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Fleming) and Sid Ayling. Joanie met and married Robert “Bob” on Sept. 19, 1970. Together, they lived in many places due to Bob’s career in the US Marines and US Navy. She loved being a military wife. They settled in St. Mary’s county in 1984 while stationed at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. They had 45 wonderful years together until Bob’s recent death on July 15th. Joanie worked at the Lexington Park United Methodist Church for 10 years and then at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Church for 12 years. She loved to travel and do crossword puzzles. Spending time engrossed in a good book was her favorite past time. She always found the beautifully written pages to be like an adventure full of excitement and intrigue. Joyce Marie Phillips, 69, of Queen Creek, AZ and formerly of Mechanicsville, passed away on April 6, 2013 at Good Samaritan Good Shephard Society in Mesa, Arizona under Hospice care. Joyce was born on Sept. 14, 1943 in Washington, DC, daughter of the late Thomas L. Gore and the late Pearl Mae Guiliano. She attended school in Washington, DC. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Veteran’s Administration in Phoenix, AZ. She battled COPD for many years however, was not a smoker. The family would like to thank Comprehensive Care Hospice of the Valley for their continuous support during her illness and support to the family. In addition to her parents, Joyce is predeceased by her brother, Frank Gore. Donald Gordon Wathen Sr. “Poppy” passed away August 11, 2013 at this residence, in the care of Hospice. He was 71 year old. Donald was the son of the late Arthur Mitchell Wathen and Mary Effie Lacey Wathen. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mabel Marie Wathen. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Lawrence Wathen and Richard Wathen and his sister Marie Miller. He is survived by his sisters Edith Roehs, Rachel Quade and Bea Rippy. His delightful children Donald Wathen Jr (Wendy). Wendy Wathen (Isom) and Bernie Wathen (Amanda). His brilliant grandchildren Zachary Walker (Jessica), Cory Wathen, Jordan Wathen, Keegan Van Pattan, Kayleigh Wathen and his first wonderful great granddaughter Marlee Sue Walker. Donald retired from the Architect of the Capitol October 30, 2004 after working there for 27 years. His interests consisted of playing and spoiling his dog companion Bubba. He liked gardening and watching birds. He also enjoyed watching Nascar and football with his family. Agnes Lucille Butler, daughter of the late Joseph Ignatius Butler, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Butler, was born on January 14, 1923 in Chaptico, MD. Lucille greeted our Lord in Heaven with a peaceful smile of joy Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the St. Mary’s Nursing Center. Lucille was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, MD and a faithful member of Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church. Lucille was educated in the public schools in St. Mary’s County and was employed for many years as a domestic worker for a number of families throughout St. Mary’s County. Lucille worked for many years at the old St. Mary’s Academy in Leonardtown, MD caring for the students and religious order of nuns at the school. Lucille retired after many years of dedicated service. Lucille was a devout Catholic who daily recited the rosary and watched the shut-in mass on tv. Lucille loved to cook, plant flowers and vegetables, hosting family Christmas dinners, and loved to dance in her younger days. Thomas Eaton Kinnear, Jr., 87, of Berlin passed away on August 13 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in St. Mary’s County. Thomas was born on August 10, 1926, son of the late Thomas Eaton Kinnear, Sr. and the late Agnes (Harding) Kinnear, He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and received a World War II Victory Medal. Thomas served his country well. He entered active service on November 6, 1945 and was honorably discharged on May 4, 1947. Thomas also served with the U.S. Embassy in Canada. Later, he worked for 31 years as a cryptologist for National Security Agency. Helen Vivian Bridenstine, 88, of Mechanicsville passed peacefully August 11 at Washington Hospital Center. Born May 9, 1925 in Washington, DC she was the daughter of Joseph Elmer McCoy and Mable Newby McCoy. Helen worked for 38 years as a manager for the C & P Telephone Company and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was married Oct. 6, 1945 in Kensington to Carl Edwin Bridenstine. They were married for 57 years. Known by her family as “quite a talker” and affectionately known by members of the community as “Ms. B” or “Ma”, she was well-loved by them all. Helen was also an advocate for her late grandson, Stephen D. Mattingly, II who was born with Down Syndrome. Capt. Michael Alfred Cosgrove, USN (Ret) “Cos”, 65, of Lexington Park, MD died August 8, 2013 at the Specialty Hospital of Washington in D.C. Born April 10, 1948 in Madrid, Spain, he is the son of Alfred Kevin Cosgrove of Chicopee, MA and the late Irene Beatrice (Roulier) Cosgrove. Cos graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD in 1970. He married his wife of nearly 42 years, Rhea, on September 18, 1971 at the Westover Air Force Base in MA. He attended Post Graduate Naval School in Monterey, CA in 1978; was a member of the 1980 U.S. Naval Test Pilot School class in Patuxent River, MD; and a graduate of the Naval War College in 1984 in Newport, RI. During his naval career, he flew more than 4,000 hours in 70 different types of aircraft and supported multiple deployments at sea. He participated in the evacuation of Americans from South Vietnam in 1975 and on a later deployment was credited with two successful rescues in the western Pacific. Diehl of Edelon, FL, and the late Donna White. Ray is survived by his loving wife Sarah “Sunni” Diehl, whom he married on Sept. 19, 2009 in Lexington Park. Raymond is survived by his children; Matthew (7), Kaylyn (6), Caleb (4), Logan (1) Diehl, of California, and Brother Robert Diehl (Vicky) of California. Ray graduated from Thomas Stone High School and Southern Maryland Christian Academy in 1996, and graduated from Towson State University in 1999, with a Bachelors Degree in Mass Communications. He moved from Waldorf to St. Mary’s County in 2005 and worked as an Electronics technician. Ray was a musician in the band “Lennex”; he loved fishing, swimming, and anything near the water. Born June 20, 1953 in Washington County, PA, he was the son of the late Louis John Debbis and Juanita (Wilson) Debbis. Bobby loved to fish every chance he got. He was a #1 Redskin Fan, he lived and breathed Harley Davidson and his dream was to buy a new bike and ride off. He worked for several local companies and was an “over the road” trucker. Marguerite Stephens Sheridan, age 100+ died at her home, Lusby on August 18. He was born, May 31, 1913, in New York City, NY to the late Roderick Stephens and Marguerite Dulon Stephens. Marguerite Stephens was raised in Scarsdale, NY with her two brothers, Olin and Rod. After her marriage in 1936, she and her husband, Robert (Sheridan) lived outside Rochester, NY, where they brought up their three children. They retired to Dorset, VT in 1971 to the house they designed and built over the preceding ten years. Among Marguerite’s passions was the great outdoors: gardens of ferns, flowers and vegetables; songbirds and wildflowers she discovered on hikes. Her first love was always her family for whom she made home a very special place. Following her husband’s death after 66 years of marriage, Marguerite moved to Wildewood Village in California, and finally to her daughter’s home in Lusby where she died peacefully with her family by her side. She is survived by her 3 children and their spouses: Susan and Frank Parish, Richard and Nancy Sheridan and Frances and Kenneth Bushee, nine grandchildren and twenty two great-grandchildren. William Dale “Bill” Shields, 69, of Tracy’s Landing passed away August 18 at his residence. He was born in Sept. 21, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA to Dr. Richard and Betty Shields. In his youth, he spent summers in Lewes, DE with his grandparents. He attended Ambler University in Philadelphia, PA prior to enlisting in the United States Army and serving his country in Vietnam, earning the Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign and Good Conduct Medals. He married Barbara Eversfield on Oct. 11, 1989, and they resided in Fairhaven. Bill retired from the United States Postal Service. A dedicated Baltimore Orioles and Washington Redskins fan, he spent many summer days in Memorial Stadium, with his children and later his grandchildren. He enjoyed sailing and fishing and being on the Chesapeake Bay and the beach in Fair Haven, and taking longs walks with his dogs in the woods. Bill loved children and animals and always shared his life with a dog. He was also a proud Democrat and enjoyed watching election returns. Julia Gates Dyer, 88, of Mechanicsville and formerly of Bel Alton passed away on August 22 at Hospice House of Charles County. She was born on August 9, 1925 in Indian Head, daughter of Mitchell Overton Gates and Mary Ruth (Marlow) Gates who have preceded her in death. Julia worked for several years at P.S. Bowling & Company in La Plata as a sales clerk in the candy department. She was always greeting customers with a smile, but the majority of her life was spent caring for her family. Julia was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that spent hours embroidering, reading, watching and feeding the birds, discussing and debating politics and enjoying her little dog with her greatest enjoyment coming from cooking and caring for her family. For all these reasons and more, she will be greatly missed. Ruene Marie (Drew) Camper 75, of Lexington Park formerly of Waldorf passed away August 18, born April 26, 1938 in Washington DC. She was the daughter of the late Charles Preston Drew and the late Ruene Marcella (Norris) Russell. Her birth father died when she was very young and her mom remarried the late James Russell. Ruene married her late husband Elbert (Reds) Camper May 18, 1969. Ruene graduated from St. Cecilia’s Academy in 1957. She had many jobs over the years. She worked at AGS and Harper Graphics as a proofreader and a night auditor at the Holiday Inn in Waldorf. Ruene loved her Chihuahua’s and had many over the years. Herman Charles Neels, 95, of Charlotte Hall, formerly of Towson, passed away on August 18, 2013 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. He was born on Jan. 31, 1918 in Baltimore, son of the late Edward Neels and the late Lena (Dreyer) Neels. Mr. Neels served in the Army in France in the Second World War. He was employed by S.C.M. Chemicals and worked in chemical production. He enjoyed reading, hiking, and sporting events. Lourdes Cortes 77 of Waldorf died at her home on August 17. She was born in Manila on Dec. 31, 1935 to the late Pascieal Cortes and Emilia Manaloc. She is survived by her son Roderick A. Villarin and his wife Rhoda, daughter Irwin V. Escorpeso and her husband Donny, brother Alfonso Cortes and his wife Lotie, 3 grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous other family members. She worked for the government in the Philippines as a Divisional Chief at the National Tobacco Administration. She enjoyed dancing, singing, watching TV and cooking. She Immigrated to the United States in 2000 and was naturalized in 2001. Eleanor Anne (Wallace) Cislo, 59, of Hughesville, formerly of Waldorf, passed away on August 14 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. She was born on Oct. 23, 1953 in Bethesda, daughter of Mary Alice (Mello) Wallace and the late Oliver Robert Wallace, Jr. Eleanor graduated from Surrattsville High School in Clinton in 1971 and married John Leon Cislo in 1975. They have enjoyed a loving marriage of 38 years. Eleanor was a dialysis tech for over 30 years and lovingly cared for her dialysis patients. She later retired due to her health battle with cancer. She enjoyed day trips, the beach, and all creatures in nature. In addition to her husband, Eleanor is survived by her beloved “Molly”, her mother, Mary Alice (Mello) Wallace and her sisters Christine (Wallace) Hinchliffe and Elaine Wallace. Eleanor also leaves behind her brothers-in-law, John Lawrence Crowley and Richard W. Hinchliffe; and sister-in-law Margaret (Peggy) Alvey Wallace. Edward Theodore Koehn,”Pops”, 79, of St. Leonard passed away August 22 at his home. He was born on March 6, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Theodore and Anna Brockmann Koehn. Pops served in the Marine Corp from 1952 to 1955 where he was an Amphibian Tank Commander and was discharged at the rank of Sergeant. Pops moved to Calvert County from Florida in 1975, and went to work at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in the Radiation Protection Department. He retired from Calvert Cliffs in 1998 and went to work for Calvert Cliffs State Park where he greeted people and loved talking to them about the park. He was a Civil War buff, who enjoyed crabbing, fishing, boating, the Redskins and was an avid NASCAR Fan.
