Lillian “Irene” Rawlings, of Prince Frederick, MD passed away, July 11, 2016. Born to the late William and Janie Kidwell. She was the loving wife to the late Robert “Pete” Rawlings. Beloved mother too; William Andrew Rawlings (Bobby), Joyce M. Galgano (Tom), Diana Brown, Robin Stansell (Robert) and the late Patsy Viola Rawlings. Captain Joseph F (Joe) Rupp, aged 74, passed away suddenly at home on July 7, 2016. He was married to Janet (Martyn) Rupp for forty-two years. He served in the Army in Germany in the late 1950s. Joe was captain of the charter fishing boat “The Lucky Duck” and, with his wife Janet, fished the waters of the Chesapeake Bay for over forty years. They have a large loyal customer base that keeps coming back for more. Joe was a well known and respected Chesapeake Bay Waterman and a past President of the Maryland Charter Boat Association. He was very knowledgeable on Chesapeake Bay wildlife and gave interesting presentations on this subject at the Herrington Harbor Marina. For many years, Joe and his wife, Janet, were hunting guides for Canadian Geese on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. People will remember Joe’s wonderful ability to tell stories about the Chesapeake Bay way of life and his outspoken opinions on fisheries matters. They will also remember his rapid fire jokes. Doris Hance Denton, 87, of Sunderland, died July 11, 2016 at Calvert Memorial Hospital. She was born November 23, 1928 in Mutual to the late James E. and Hazel E. Hance. She graduated from Calvert High School and attended business school in Baltimore, Maryland. Upon completion of business school, she began a personnel management career with the United States Air Force at Bolling and Andrews Air Force Bases that spanned over three decades. During that period she assumed many different roles and grew with her responsibilities. Managing scores of staff, she was constantly recognized as the go to person when difficult personnel issues would arise. She and her husband, Lester (also employed by the US Air Force) prided themselves in identifying young women from Calvert County who had the potential to serve our government. Together, they helped many Calvert countians begin very successful careers within the civil service. In addition to her responsibilities to the Air Force, she was a devoted wife and mother. Sarah Elizabeth Holt, affectionately known as “Granny”, 76 of Lexington Park, MD, entered into eternal life on July 09, 2016 at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Sarah was born on February 12, 1940 to the late Carrie Elizabeth (Mason) Holt and John Columbus Holt. Sarah attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School in Morganza, MD, graduating in 1955. Sarah worked at St. Mary’s Hospital for 29 years until her retirement in 2002. She enjoyed spending time with her family watching her favorite soaps; The Young and the Restless and the Bold and the Beautiful. She also enjoyed going shopping at Home Goods with her granddaughter, Nickey and going to her daughter Selina’s house for Sunday dinner. In addition to her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by seven siblings, Pauline Medley, Agnes Courtney, Arcadia Holt, Rose Holt, James Patrick Holt, John Philip Holt, John Columbus Holt and one grandson, James Holt. Naomi W. Drew “Omi”, 68 of Gaithersburg, MD passed away on July 7, 2016 in Mechanicsville, MD. Born on September 19, 1947 she was the daughter of the late Alvin P. White and Ruby White Buchanan. Omi was the wife of the late Edgar W. Drew. She is survived by her daughter Robin Pajak (John) of Lexington Park MD., her son Richard Scott (Lisa) of Waynesboro, VA., her grand children: Stanley Pajak, Michael Pajak, Morgan Scott, Richard Scott and Skylar Scott and her sister Lucille W. Kidwell of Mechanicsville, MD. She was preceded in death by her sister Barbara Pruitt. Omi graduated form La Plata High School in 1965 and was an E S Account Representative for National Electrical Benefits Fund, retiring on December 31, 2015 after 18+ years. She was also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Memorial Contributions in her name may be made to Hospice of St. Mary’s PO Box 625 Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Michael William Cronan, age 66, of Leonardtown, MD, passed away on Monday, July 11, 2016 at home with his wife by his side. He was the faithful husband of 45 years to Julie Sweeney Cronan, the loving father to Philip (Genevieve), Christa, and Catherine (Andrew), and devoted grandfather to nine beautiful grandchildren. He was the beloved son of the late John and Marion McSweeney Gilroy, and the loyal brother of the late Jacqueline, late Dorothy, Philip, John, and Thomas. A native of Astoria, Queens, NY, and graduate of St. Michael’s College in Colchester, VT (’72), Michael was a longtime resident of Waldorf, MD, and spent his career as sales manager for Michelin Tires and regional salesman for Somerset Homes. Michael was an extraordinarily gentle and kind hearted man who accepted and prevailed over all the challenges of his life with a quiet dignity and firm resolve. His life focused around spending time with his family and friends. He never missed an opportunity to make those around him feel comfortable, welcomed, and loved, and he imparted these same values to his children. Born October 6,1960 in Long Beach, CA, he was the son of Marjorie Christian of Santee, SC and Elgin Ray Christian of Clemont, FL. Tom was the loving husband of Dawn Christian of Hollywood, MD whom he married on November 1, 2010 in Maui, Hawaii. He is also survived by his daughter Shannon Christian of Raleigh, NC and 1 grandson Cameron Artzner of Geneva, FL, sister; Nancie (Brad) Ludwig of Vance, SC Tom was preceded in death by a brother Steven Christian of Vance, SC. Dennis “Scott” Mattingly, 31 of Leonardtown, MD passed away on July 12, 2016. Born November 8, 1984 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the loving son of Dennis I. and Deborah J. Mattingly of Leonardtown, MD. Scott was the grandson of Thelma (Tookie) Hayden. He was predeceased in death by his grandfathers; Thomas (Teenie) Hayden and William J. Mattingly and by his grandmother Hilda Mattingly. Scott attended Father Andrew White through grade school and graduated from St. Mary’s Ryken in 2002, he graduated from Towson University in 2006 with a Computer Science degree in Molecular Biology, Bio Chemistry ND Bio Informatics, and he was a Computer Programmer for The Reinforced Earth Company (IT Department) for nine years. Most of all he was a very caring, lovable and friendly person. He was an active participant in the Newman Center at Towson University, enjoying and participating in their plays, dinners and Sunday services. Scott loved to watch the Ravens and Redskins. Most of his time was dedicated to his work once he entered the workforce. George McWilliams III, 81 of Avenue, MD passed away on July 10, 2016, at the Hospice House of St. Mary’s surrounded by his family and his best friend and faithful companion, “Bear.” George was born on October 8, 1934, in Washington, DC to the late George (Jr) and Alice Beitzell McWilliams. George began his career with the Soil Conservation immediately following his high school graduation.  He worked there for 35 years.  He served in the US Army National Guard for 8 years, was a St. Mary’s County School Bus Contractor for 40 years, was a Charter Member of the Seventh District Volunteer Rescue Squad and served on the St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission.  Aside from his family, George’s greatest love was the Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department which he joined at the age 16.  He held multiple positions, served on numerous boards and was the Chief for 25 years. Born June 14, 1959 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of Herbert LeRoy Richards and Joy Elaine Marshall Richards. Sandra was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, cooking and being with family, especially her grandchildren. Predeceased by her parents and brother William Richards, Sandra is survived by her companion Francis Michael Murphy; children Steven Brickman (Felicia), Lee Brickman (Magen), Robert A. Howard Addison Mattingley, 63, of Leonardtown, MD died on July 11, 2016 at his home in Leonardtown, MD. Howard was born February 24, 1953 in Leonardtown, MD to the late W. Clarke Mattingley and Joyce Addison Mattingley. A life-long resident of St. Mary’s County, Howard possessed a kind, friendly and caring spirit .  Howard’s life-long passion was music.  He was a talented, self-trained musician who, as a young man, performed in a band playing a variety of instruments.  He had an extensive music collection and was well versed in music history.  Howard was an avid reader who enjoyed studying theology and history.  He was a devout Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Howard is survived by his sister, Charlene Kelly (JP) of Leonardtown, MD; his nephews, John and Patrick Kelly, both of Leonardtown, MD; and many extended family and friends.  In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brother, Charles Frederick Mattingley. John Howard Gass, known as Papa, Pop Pop, and Johnny was born in Avenue, MD on December 18, 1924. He was a lifelong St. Mary’s county resident. As a young man he worked as a waterman, he worked on the Wilson Line, and worked as a Painter. Family was important to Johnny and he enjoyed many years with his extended family. Johnny and his wife Sis loved children in addition to having a daughter and son they were foster parents. He grew up in Avenue, MD. He built his own house at the age of 26, which he continued to live in until the present. His grandson Chuckie has lived with him since he was young. Dawn joined him in the household in 2000, then Great Grandson Curtice in 2002, followed by Dalaynee in 2005. Chuckie and Curtice enjoyed the water as much as Johnny did, they provided him crabs and fish he always loved to eat. Many fish stores were explained between them. His granddaughter Angel has remained constant in Johnny’s life even living in multiple states. She always visited him, and took him to church when she could. He always loved visits from family. James “Jimmy” Ignatius Gatton Sr., 78, of Leonardtown, MD passed away on July 13, 2016. Jimmy was born on September 19, 1937 in his family home on Medleys Neck Road. He was the son of the late William C. Gatton and Mary C. Evans Gatton. Jimmy was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County and was very proud to call this home. You could often find him riding around Leonardtown in his pickup truck, stopping at the local hot spots to say hello to friends or just to people watch and you could often catch him somewhere playing Keno and the Lottery. In his early years, he was an altar boy at Our Lady’s Church, went to Our Lady’s Church School and went on to attend Saint Mary’s Academy. Early in his career, Jimmy worked for Par Gas, but then started working construction. A few years later he opened his excavating business, J & W Construction with a friend, where he worked from 1975 until retirement in year 2000. Nicholson “Nick” Parker

The son of Major General Edwin P. Parker and Hannah Somerville Matthews Parker, Nicholson (Nick) Parker was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on September 27, 1921. Nick graduated from West Point Military Academy in June 1943 and joined the troops of the 69th Division participating in the linkup with the Russian Army at Torgau on the Elbe River. His career in the U.S. Army continued with a variety of roles including gunnery instructor at Fort Sill and research and development of artillery and guided missiles (most memorable the Jupiter-C satellite) at the Pentagon. He earned Masters degrees in Aerospace Engineering and International Relations as well as being a graduate of the US Army War College and the Command and General Staff College. His last assignment was in London where he represented the U.S. in the NATO weapons and equipment standardization program. Retiring in 1969 as Colonel in the U.S. Army and living in Washington DC, Nick taught math at St. Stephen’s School in Alexandria, VA and was active in his family’s church, Christ Church, Georgetown.
