Catherine Pardoe Trueman, of Lusby, Maryland passed away at the age of 99 on July 23, 2016 at the Taylor Farm Assisted Living in Bushwood, MD. Catherine was the daughter of Lawrence and Anna Pardoe, born on June 24, 1917 in Island Creek, MD. She grew up on a tobacco farm with her two younger brothers, Roland and Lawrence. Catherine attended school in Calvert County and graduated from Towson State College in 1932. She started her teaching career in Solomons and eventually moving to Glen Burnie, she retired after 40 years. She enjoyed teaching first grade the most where “she could give them a good start”. In her retirement, she spent her winters in Florida where she always welcomed friends from “up north” to come and visit. And if they liked to play games, they were encouraged to stay even longer. She loved all kinds of board games, and cards, especially Canasta and Bridge…. Even through her 80s. Another passion was traveling, where she was able to visit over 20 countries. She was a member of Waters Memorial United Methodist Church throughout her life. Commander James Adair Newcomb (Retired), born July 23, 1928, flew his last flight on July 22, 2016, one day before his 88th birthday. Cdr. Newcomb, known by all who knew him as “Jim”, was a pilot in the United States Navy for 32 years, bravely serving during the Korean and Viet Nam wars. He received several medals for heroism during his career, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. Jim was well known for his generosity, loyalty, laughter, his love of sharing his huge store of knowledge and his ability to build and fix almost anything. He was born in Ventura, California to Fred and Ruth Newcomb. He married his high school sweetheart, Gwendolyn Mayhew, in 1956. They remained as much in love as when they married, throughout their sixty years. Gwen survives him, as well as their children, Alan Newcomb, Randy Newcomb, Laura Newcomb Cumberland, and Margaret Newcomb; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. James will always remain a hero to his family and loved by all who knew him. Joseph Hamlin Dobson IV, resident of Piney Point, entered life eternal on Saturday, July 23rd, at the age of 75. He was born in Washington. D.C., October 21, 1940, to the late Joseph H. Dobson III and Bertha L. Dobson. He was graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1958, and from American University in 1967. He was married to Kathy Kilby in 1961, and had 3 children, Cinde, Beth, and Jody. Known to friends and family as “Little Joe,” “Joe,” “Joseph,” “Father Joe”, and “Bishop Joe,” he was an IBM-er turned entrepreneur. The family relocated to Lexington Park in 1972, where he co-founded and managed Loffler Marine. In 1987, he married Linda Tharp Fuchs, and in the early 90s, he left the marine industry to become the Administrator at Cedar Lane Apartments in Leonardtown, where he served for 13 years. During this time, Joseph also served as a chaplain at St. Mary’s Hospital and with St. Mary’s Hospice, ministries he was passionate about. In 2004, he became “Father Joe” and went into full-time ministry with the United Episcopal Church of North America, where he was consecrated a Bishop and continued to serve until 2013. Ann Ljone, age 73, of Chesapeake Beach, MD, formerly of Sidmouth, Devon, England, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 24, 2016, with her family by her side. She was born on April 13, 1943, in Cornwall, England, to Thomas and Eileen Chambers. Ann worked as a Senior Naval Architect for Computer Science Corporation. She was a resident of Chesapeake Beach for the last three years. Living in Chesapeake Beach allowed her plenty of time to enjoy the ships and boats passing by. She loved to take walks on the Boardwalk and watch the ospreys and eagles. She enjoyed anything involving ships and boats. For many years she was an official referee for field hockey and lacrosse; and was an avid field hockey player herself in her youth. She loved watching the Washington Redskins, the English Soccer Premier League and rugby. Donald Wayne “Donny” Holt, 56, of California, MD left us Friday, July 22, 2016 to be with grand mom in heaven and is no longer hurting. Donny was born on May 26, 1960 in Cheverly, MD to George Melvin Holt and the late Shirley Mae Simmons Holt. Donny loved being outdoors whether it was working on the Harry Nice Bridge, being on the beach or sitting on his back porch watching the boats race. He loved animals especially his cat, Sadie.   He was always checking in with his kids to make sure his grandkids were doing great. His favorite day was Sunday so he could watch NASCAR and the Washington Redskins. He loved working as an iron worker and would have done that for as long as possible. Ryan Allen Langley, 23, of Mechanicsville, MD passed away on July 23, 2016 at his residence. Ryan was born on March 18, 1993 in Leonardtown, MD to Daniel Wayne Langley and Crystal Dawn Lacey Bookwalter. Ryan was a die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan and loved everything about football.   He also enjoyed basketball, fishing, playing poker and pool, street car racing and most of all just chilling with his friends. Anna Louise Baker, “Mama,” 82, of Leonardtown, MD quietly departed this life July 26, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Anna was born on October 9, 1933 in Budds Creek, MD to the late Andrew Sylvester Bush and Bernadine E. Fenwick. Anna received her education in St. Mary’s County Public School system. She married the loved of her life, the late George French Baker, Sr. They were blessed with 12 children, and three step children, which she loved and treated as her own. She was employed by St. Mary’s Academy for several years. She stopped working to take care of her family, including her brothers and sisters. She loved to cook, and was known for preparing delicious meals, including stuffed ham, yams, potato salad, and yeast biscuits. She was devoted to the Lord and practicing her faith. She spent many hours involved in church activities and retreats. She enjoyed shopping, with her favorite pastime being shopping at the local thrift stores and the Family Dollar store, to spend her last dollar. Robert Andrew “Bob” Deffinbaugh, 77, of Lusby, MD, passed away on July 18, 2016 at his residence. Born August 31, 1938 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Mountz Deffinbaugh and Anne (Ott) Deffinbaugh. Bob graduated from John Carroll High School in 1956 and from the University of Maryland in 1962. He was married to his wife Pat on September 9, 1961 in Pikesville, MD. Bob moved to the county from Silver Spring, MD in 1995. For thirty three years he was a teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools, retiring in June of 1995. Bob was a member of Lusby Duplicate Bridge and a friend of Bill W. and Dr. Bob. James was raised in Silver Spring and graduated from St. Johns College High School and attended Brown University. He married Laura Raeder on July 6, 1974 and they lived in various places before moving to Dowell in 2014. James was employed as a craftsman and owner of JTG Masonry until his retirement. In his leisure time James enjoyed football, motorcycles, fishing, hunting, sporting events and spending time with his family. James was also an avid fan of the Washington Redskins. Joseph Allen “Sambo” Swann, 71, of Owings passed away July 26, 2016 at Washington Hospital Center. He was born March 15, 1945 in Prince Frederick to Joseph Samuel and Ethel Adelaide (Ward) Swann. Sambo was a fifth generation Calvert County farmer with his uncle Bid, nephew Jody and son Joe-Sam. He was a lifelong advocate for land preservation, wildlife conservation and protection of the Chesapeake watershed. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Bradley Mason Harrison, 80, died on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD. Bradley was born September 21, 1935, in Alexandria, VA to the late William Franklin Harrison and Ollie Burns Harrison. On August 26, 1958 he proudly enlisted in the United States Army and served his country until his Honorable Discharge in August 1960.  During his service he earned the Good Conduct Medal.  He was employed as a chief engineer for Embassy Dairy until his retirement.  On October 26, 1970, he married his beloved wife, Mary Costello.  Together, they celebrated over 41 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2012.  Together, they enjoyed travelling, especially to Nags Head, NC.  He liked to “tinker” with things, and fixed many of them.  He liked having little projects to work on.  He was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan and enjoyed spending time on the water, especially fishing.  He was very patient and cared deeply for his family.  His greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren, whom he spoiled. Lathan Walter Gragan, 83, of Chaptico, MD passed away on July 27, 2016. Born on November 27, 1932 in Chaptico, MD he was the son the late James Walter and Anna Marie Hill Gragan. He was the husband of Mary Virginia Vallandingham Gragan whom he married on July 4, 1955 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bushwood, MD. He is survived by his sister Millie Norris of Hollywood, MD. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Bernadette Dingee, Elwood Gragan, Annabelle Copsey, Dorothy Vallandingham, Shirley Huntington, and Nancy Miedzinski. The family will received friends on Monday August 1, 2016 from 5:00-8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. Adelia (Dee) Anne Campbell Watson, 69, of Brandywine, MD passed away on July 27, 2016 at her residence in Brandywine, MD. Dee was born January 4, 1947 in Greeneville, TN to the late Joe A. Campbell, Sr. and the late Vera Ketner Campbell. Dee received her Associate Degree from Steed College in Johnson City, TN, after graduating from Greeneville High School.   She retired from the House of Representatives Office of Telecommunications in 1997. Dee was a member of the First Baptist Church in Greeneville, TN, the Pink Ladies 2003-2013, and Project Linus 2002-2015. Dee was predeceased by her parents and brother, Dr. Joe A. Campbell. She is survived by her loving husband, William “Bill” Watson; sister, Lois Scruggs (Jimmie) of Fort Worth, TX; stepchildren, Sharon Watson Potter (Larry), David Watson (Jeana), Mike Watson (Cindy); grandchildren, Samantha Potter Lance (Phil), Vicky Potter Miller (Matt), Elizabeth Potter, Nichole Bohannon Verhun (Chris), Caitlynn Watson Upshaw (Jamal), Sarah Watson; great grandchildren, Caleb Lance and Leah Lance; 11 nephews, 7 nieces and 16 cousins. David Wayne Wester, 44, of Prince Frederick passed away July 27, 2016. He was born May 21, 1972 in Prince Frederick to Artis Earl, Jr. and Deborah Jean (Hardesty) Wester. David was raised in Owings and graduated from Northern High School in 1990. He was employed as a master plumber with his family business, Wester’s Plumbing and Heating for 26 years. David married Donna M. Hayes on December 27, 2007 in Prince Frederick and they lived on Hunting Creek Farm in Huntingtown before moving back to Prince Frederick. In his leisure time David enjoyed hunting, fishing and fur trapping with his dad. He also enjoyed talking with people, hanging out at the boat dock, watching old TV shows and spending time with his family, especially his son David Wayne Jr. David was a hardworking man who harvested off the land and was the salt of the Earth in Southern Maryland. Franklin Eugene “Gene” Thompson, 54, of Waldorf, MD formerly of Avenue, MD, passed away on July 30, 2016 at Hospice of Charles County. Gene was born on November 11, 1961, in Leonardtown, MD to the late Joseph A. “Gussy” Thompson, Sr. and Agnes Genevieve Hayden Thompson. Gene lived at the ARC of Southern Maryland Group Home in Waldorf, MD for 18 years. His caregiver was Margaret Savoy. Gene loved listening to music, especially Charley Pride, strumming his guitar, and bowling and was a Dallas Cowboy fan. He participated in Special Olympics and won several medals. Gene is survived by his brothers, Joseph A. “Buddy” Thompson, Jr. (Louise) of Clements, MD and Robert Thompson (Denise) of Compton, MD, sister in law’s, Brenda Thompson of Waldorf, MD and Sharon Thompson of Leonardtown, MD, six nephews and two nieces.
