William Daniel “Dan” Goodman, 79, of Newburg, died on Monday, November 13, 2017, at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC following a brief illness. Mr. Goodman is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty (Wagner) Goodman; his son, Richard Goodman (Tammy), his daughters Jennifer Burroughs (Ashley), and Tricia Ducker (Sean), siblings Tom, Rick, Joe, Naomi and Myrt, 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Paul, Sarah, David, and Becky. Dan was born and raised in a small town in Tennessee, the son of Reuben and Mary Goodman. As the son of a pastor, Dan was raised with a strong faith in his God. He joined the United States Army, where he served for 3 years, before settling in Maryland, where he met his wife Betty. They were married in 1977. Dan made a career as a District Manager for Safeway for many years, before venturing out on his own, and operating a small family store in Newburg, MD. “Dan’s Store” on Rock Point Road became a local meeting spot, with its motto of “Where Friends Meet”. Lydia Marie Russell, 82, a longtime resident of Calvert County, passed away November 12, 2017 at the Mandrin Inpatient Care Center in Harwood, MD. Known as Marie, she was born January 29, 1935 and was raised on her family’s farm in West Beach, now part of Chesapeake Beach. She attended public school and worked raising tobacco and other crops and livestock. She later was employed as a waitress at local restaurants, and was a homemaker raising her son and daughter. Prior to her passing Marie had resided in Deale, and in Edgewater with her son Bill. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Deale, and a devout Christian. In her leisure time Marie loved going to flea markets, and also enjoyed flower gardening and spending time with her family. Marie was preceded in death by her parents Mary Marie (Stallings) and Roland Edward Lauer, her husband William Clyde Russell, and a daughter Mary Jane Russell. She is survived by her son William R. “Bill” Russell of Edgewater, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a brother William Robert Lauer of Missouri and a sister Doris Ann Leonard of Deale

Commander Byron Smith (United States Navy (Retired) Byron Smith, 56, of La Plata, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on November 13, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. Byron was born on November 28, 1960, to Robert Smith and Mary Viola Smith in Malden, Massachusetts. He grew up in Guilderland, New York and married Jaqueline Smith in 2006. They have three sons; Leo, Lincoln and Grant. He graduated from Florida Institute of Technology in 1980 and was employed by Taylor Diving and Salvage in Belle Chase, LA as a Life Support Technician Byron was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1985. He became a Naval Aviator in 1989 and flew EA-6B Prowlers under the call sign “Trouble”. He deployed onboard the USS Forrestal (CV-59) and the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). He earned a Master of Science and Aeronautical Engineering Degree from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School in 1992. Upon leaving active duty, Mr. Smith joined the General Electric Company as a Six Sigma Black Belt and became an International Sourcing Manager and Supply Chain Manager for GE Transportation Systems. On Wednesday, November 15, 2017, Wendy Renee Francisco, 43 of Brandywine, MD, entered into eternal rest. Wendy was one of six children, born on December 23, 1973 to parents, Johnny Solis Francisco and Mildred Francis Francisco. She was the mother of two beautiful children, Molly Morris and Jack Morris, whom she loved with her whole heart. Wendy’s profession was an IT Specialist and she was smart as a whip at any electronics and technology. Wendy was a beautiful, gentle soul, who had many friends and a lot of close family members. She had a beautiful smile with a personality to match. In her spare time she enjoyed spending time with her family and especially going to thrift stores and yard sales with her mother. She also enjoyed going to oyster fest, crab feast and dinners at the local American Legion and local churches with her father and siblings. Jesse Ignatius Farrell, 37, of Avenue, MD passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born July 5, 1980 in Leonardtown, MD to Noble Farrell and Sharon Morris Farrell. Jesse was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. Jesse married his girl Marjorie on July 5, 2008 at Holy Angels Church in Avenue, MD. He was a waterman and enjoyed being on the water. He loved his Bay Built boat “Ann French”. He never met a stranger and would do anything for anyone. He loved spending time with his family. In addition to his parents and wife, Marjorie, Jesse is also survived by his brother, Wesley Farrell (Brandi) of Avenue, MD his step-children, Brandie Waugaman and Dylan Waugaman both of Avenue, MD. James “Ronnie” Flora of Mechanicsville, MD and formerly of Beltsville, MD, passed on November 14, 2017 at Washington Hospital Center. Ronnie is survived by Cecelia (BB) M. Dornall Flora, his wife of 38 years, devoted father of Tracy Flora and Lois Ort, both of Mechanicsville and Kimberly June of Glen Burnie; grandfather of Chase Redman, Christopher and Victoria Hunt and Amanda Rinker, and great-grandfather to Gracelynn Hunt. Son of Doris Lanham and the late Harry N. Flora; brothers Steve, Denny and Danny Flora and the late Janice Musgrove. Ronnie was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He retired from Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission in 1996. Since his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his wife and family. Jamie Robert Weimert, 29, of Cobb Island, died unexpectedly on November 12, 2017. He was born on September 29, 1988, and is the son of Lori and Derrick Spears. Jamie was to everybody, exactly what they needed. He was a devoted and loving son, brother, and father. He was a kind and giving friend. He was generous to a fault and a kind, sincere man. Dedicated to his family, Jamie worked along-side his father everyday helping him to run the family business. Beyond work, they were best friends. His mother Lori, was his rock and Jamie, was hers. The love he had for his sister was beyond measure and he always admired her for her dedicated service and love for God. Joyce Virginia Tipton, 77 of Ocean View, Delaware (formerly of Nanjemoy, Maryland), died November 14, 2017, from a long battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family. Joyce was a Certified Medical Assistant at doctors’ offices. She was a very caring and loving woman who loved her family with passion. She loved the beach, food, and antiques. Christmas was her favorite holiday. She was the daughter of Lloyd Gilbert Williams and Frances Virginia Towers Williams. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, Robert “Butch: Tipton. She is survived by her sons, Thomas “Butch” Dixon (girlfriend, Annette) and William “Billy” Dixon; her daughters, Joann Copsey (Ronnie) and Jeannie Dixon; her grandchildren, Ashley Milstead (Jake), Tiffany Seyler, Rachel Dixon, Kimberly Huffman, Becca Dixon, and Joey Huffman; her great grandson, Jaidyn; her special friends, Thomas Dixon (Kay); her stepchildren, Rodney Tipton (Kerrie); Roger Tipton, and Katie Haile (JD); and six step-grandchildren. For 61 years, he was the beloved husband of Barbara L. [Morrison] Hatfield. He was the loving father of Joe Hatfield and his wife Sharon and Debbie Severn and her husband Jim. Marty was the loving wife the late Herbert Lee Mattingly whom she married on May 28, 1949 in PA, and who preceded her in death on December 23, 2008. Marty is survived by her children; Robert Mattingly of Laurel, MD, Mike Mattingly (Katie) of Annapolis, MD, Sharon Gray (Jeff) of Crofton, MD, James Mattingly (Lori) of Lowell, MI, sister in law Doreen Mattingly of Annapolis, MD 8 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son David Mattingly. She graduated from high school in Pittston, PA in 1945. Marty moved from Cheverly, MD to St. Mary’s County, MD in 1987. Constance Walker Wettengel, 74, passed away suddenly at her home in Dameron, MD on November 19, 2017. Heaven gained its best and brightest angel that morning, and she would want this time to be happy, joyful and filled with stories and love. In addition to being survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Eddie Wettengel; Connie is survived by her son, Mike Wettengel; son, Tommy Wettengel; daughter, Cindy Greb; daughter-in-law, Teena Wettengel; brother, Buddy Walker; brother, Gene Walker; sister-in-law, Linda Walker; and nine grandchildren: Bryan Wettengel, Kelsey Wettengel, Jeffrey Wettengel, Christina Wettengel, Bradley Greb, Benjamin Greb, Samantha Wettengel, Alexandra Wettengel and Lauren Heibel. Connie fell in love with Eddie when she was just 12 years old – marrying him six years later. Pauline Goldie Swaim, 74, of Leonardtown, MD passed away November 18, 2017 at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 25, 1943 in Baltimore, MD to the late Paul Owen Pumphrey and Lillian Spinks Pumphrey. Pauline was a 1962 graduate of Berkley Springs High School in West Virginia. On February 22, 1963, she married her loving husband, Douglas Alvin Swaim, Sr. in Hedgesville, WV. Together they celebrated over 54 wonderful years of marriage. She spent over 24 years as a loving bus driver for many students in the Prince George’s County public schools. She was dedicated to her family and retired to care for her grandchildren. She enjoyed Conway Twitty concerts and later her trip to Tennessee to see his home. She also loved her cruise to the Bahamas with her entire family. She was an excellent cook with some of her specialties being chicken wings and lasagna. She had a beautiful collection of lighthouses. Calvin Theodore “Ted” Abell, Jr., 68, of Ridge, MD passed away November 18, 2017 at Med Star St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD. He was born on January 19, 1949 to the late Calvin Theodore Abell, Sr. and Agnes Rosalee Franck. Ted is a 1966 graduate of St. Mary’s Ryken High School. On October 20, 1967, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served his country as a Sergeant until his Honorable Discharge in October 1971. On June 12, 1971, he married his beloved wife, Nancy Taylor Abell at Columbus Air Force Base in Columbus, MI. Together they celebrated more than 46 wonderful years of marriage. He was employed many years as a dedicated computer technician with UNYSIS until his retirement. He loved spending time on the water and was an avid fishermen. He enjoyed family vacations to the beaches at the Outer Banks. Anita Louise Davis, 78, of Leonardtown, MD passed away November 18, 2017 at Hospice House of St. Mary’s in Callaway, MD with her loving daughters at her side. She was born on February 5, 1939 in Washington, DC to the late Albert Lester Peacock and Mannetta Foster Peacock. Anita spent many years as a devoted and loving certified caregiver. She was an avid traveler, especially enjoying going to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. She also liked to take cruises. Her other hobbies included fishing, knitting and playing Bingo. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, and was very close to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Anita is survived by her children, Debbie Curtis (Tim) of Raleigh, NC, Lorraine Davis of Annapolis, MD, Mary Meyer (Glenn) of Park Hall, MD and Jo Ann Felthouse (James) of Lancaster, VA; her sister, Donna Smith of Pulaski, VA; 11 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and many extended family and friends. Mary Juliana Knott, 92, of Mechanicsville, MD (formerly of St. Mary’s City) passed away November 18, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 18, 1925 to the late Joseph Leonard Mayor Sr. and Myrtle Elizabeth Ridgell Mayor. Juliana married the love of her life, James I. Knott, Jr. on June 30, 1946 at St. James Catholic Church in Lexington Park, MD. Together they celebrated 45 wonderful years of marriage until his death in 1991. She was a dedicated insurance agent for State Farm Insurance Company; helping many people whom she also befriended. She enjoyed playing cards, especially pitch which she played every Tuesday. A most enjoyable and favorite pastime was having family and friends over for crabs and a game of Pitch. Family was her greatest love and she enjoyed spending as much time as possible with all of them. Juliana is survived by her children: Linda M. Anderson (Harold) of Mechanicsville, MD, James L.
