Charles William Hoyle, Sr., 85 of La Plata, Maryland (formerly of Mechanicsville, Maryland), died on September 29 2018 at Med-Star Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland. Born on February 3, 1933 in Oxford, North Carolina, he was the son of Ines Edgar Hoyle and Nellie West Hoyle. He worked was a store manager for 30 plus years with A&P Tea Company and later served as store manager for Grand Union. He was also a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville, Maryland. After his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed camping with friends and family and toured many parts of the United States traveling in their motor home. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife, Grace Darling Hoyle; his son, Charles William “Chuck” Hoyle, Jr.; his brothers, Eliam Hoyle and Ernest “Buddy” Hoyle; and his sister, Ruby Hoyle Joyce. He is survived by his sister, Jessie E. Hoyle Golden of Jacksonville, Florida; his grandchildren, Matthew L. On Monday, October 1, 2018, Catherine Hanna Grant (Kitty, Kitten), mother, daughter, and sister, passed away at the age of 83. She will be forever and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. One of her many qualities was that she loved her family and friends fiercely and unconditionally. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert Lee Grant; her sisters, Margaret, Betty, and Mary; and her parents, Eugene and Thelma Miller. She is survived by her daughters, Denise Atwood and Darlene Madsen; her sons-in-law, Gary and Roy; her sisters, Charlotte, Gloria, Sissy, Lynn, and Linda Grace; her brothers, Bradley Miller, Paul Eugene Miller Jr., and Arthur Miller, her grandchildren; Theresa, Timmy, Taryn, Erik, Dane, Spenser; and her great-grandchildren, Quinn, Jackson, and Manny. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. John Andrew “Jack” Bowes, 68, of Tall Timbers, MD died on September 27, 2018. He was born on September 21, 1950 in Washington, D.C., to Joseph Ford Bowes and Helen Audrey Cranston Bowes. Jack was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County and a graduate of Little Flower School (1964) and St. Mary’s Ryken High School (1968). He also attended St. Mary’s College. His employments included handyman/grounds keeper at Jubilee Farms and assistant manager/picture framer at Bowes Books. He retired from Dyson’s Hardware Store in St. Inigoes, MD after many years as manager. His special interests included old cars, family genealogy, antiques and making the rounds to visit friends and family, especially on the holidays. Jack is survived by his brothers, Joseph F. Bowes, M.D. (Helene) of Compton, MD and George Michael “Mickey” Bowes (Laurie) of Tall Timbers, MD; his sisters-in-law Patricia Bowes of Tall Timbers, MD and Margie Bowes of LaPlata, MD; and many nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. Laura Jessie Heidelmark, 93, of Mechanicsville, MD (formerly of Rensselaer, NY) passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center of Leonardtown, MD. She was born on March 3, 1925, in Odgensburg, NY to the late Alfred Jacob Laraby and Agnes Bell Riddle Laraby. Laura is a graduate of Fort Covington High School. She is a graduate of Albany Memorial Hospital School of Nursing earning a her diploma as a registered nurse. After graduation she was employed as a dedicated and caring registered nurse and later as the Assistant Director of Nursing for Albany Memorial. On January 13, 1947, she married her beloved husband, Joseph James Heidelmark in Fort Covington, NY. Together they celebrated over 33 wonderful years of marriage. She was a member of the Order of the Amaranth and the Eastern Star. She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Green of Mechanicsville, MD; her grandson, Mario Vacarelli (Katherine) of Benson, NC; her great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Paige Vacarelli, Alyssa Renee Vacarelli, and Gregory Daniel Vacarelli; her step grandchildren: Michael, Monte, Mark, Michele, Mia; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. George Broughton Spence, Jr., 81

George Broughton Spence, Jr., 81, passed away on September 15th, 2018. The cause of death was leukemia, which had only been diagnosed three weeks before. George, known as GB to his siblings, was born in 1937 on a farm in Lillington, North Carolina. He was the sixth of nine children born to Broughton Spence and Lillie Patterson Spence. GB’s father died when GB was only nine years old. With his older brother James away in the Navy and in college at the University of North Carolina, this left GB as the man of the family, responsible for plowing with a mule and raising tobacco and other crops. GB attended North Carolina State University from 1955 to 1959, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Upon graduation, he went on active duty with the Marines. While attending The Basic School at Quantico, Virginia, 2nd Lt. Spence met and married Carol Todd Spence of Hampton, Virginia, who was attending Mary Washington College. The young couple moved to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where Lt. David “Joseph” Johnson, 24, of Ridge, MD passed away on October 1, 2018 in Lexington Park, MD. Born on August 30, 1994 in Prince Frederick, MD is was the loving son of Lisa Janie Underwood and Charles Edward Johnson, Jr. of Ridge, MD. Joseph graduated from Leonardtown High School and was employed as a Welder. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 5, 2018 from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD where a Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM in the Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dan Moore officiating. It is with great sadness that the Gunson family announces the passing of Danielle Valerie Gunson on the morning of Thursday, September 27th, 2018. Danielle was born on February 19th, 2000 in Annapolis, Maryland. She grew up in the Crofton-Davidsonville area and attended South River High School. She enjoyed cheerleading, reading books (her favorites were Nicholas Sparks books), running, drawing, family camping trips, traveling, and spending time with family. She had a kind, gentle disposition. Danielle has been reunited in heaven with her older brother Shane Taylor Gunson, who passed away on September 23rd, 2014. Danielle is survived by her brothers, Dominic and Tristin, her sisters, Brianna and Lilliana, her parents, Kevin Coe and Valerie Gunson, brother-in-law Jordan Sheppard, grandparents D. Our beloved Mom and Grammy, Janell Martin, went to heaven on Monday, October 1, 2018 surrounded by her family. Janell was born in Folsom, Louisiana on September 17, 1940 to John and Tera Dillon. After marrying she moved to Maryland where she raised her five daughters. Janell was a devoted Mom to her five daughters and Grammy to her eleven grandchildren. Throughout her life she held her family as the one thing dearest to her heart. She was filled with pride at each accomplishment and enthusiastically participated in all celebrations. She was always there for her family near or far. She was our biggest cheerleader, offering unconditional love, support, sympathy and motivation. Her enthusiasm for life and love of laughter and fun making memories will live on in her family always. Janell was an active volunteer throughout her girls’ school years. She became a secretary for the Charles County Board of Education and various private law firms. In 1989, she married Dave Martin, of Waldorf, Maryland. Richard Blane Barlow, age 86, of Charlotte Hall, MD died on September 30, 2018 at his residence. Richard was a United States Air Force Veteran and a bus mechanic for the DC Metro system for 14½ years. He was also a sales representative for People’s Life Insurance Company for 17 years. Richard enjoyed cooking, growing bonsai trees, and attending church with Betty Gunkel. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Monroe Barlow and Donnie Evelyn Barlow (Underwood); his son, Richard B. Barlow Jr.; his daughter, Donna M. Morrill and two brothers, Kenneth Barlow and Tracy Barlow. Richard is survived by his daughter, Vickie Lynn Marshall (Charles); his 10 grandchildren, Lee, Robert, William, John, Daniel, Lindsey, Dereck, Katlyn, Melissa, and Brandi; and his seven great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Zackery, Dexter, Kambrah, Cameron, Lydia, and Casey. A visitation will be held at Raymond Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 from 10:30 AM until time of Funeral Service at 2:00 PM. She was the greatest mother, wife and person anyone could ask you to share their life with. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Morty, her children, Jimmy Johnny, Bruce and Brian. Elaine Marie Carey, 55, of Owings, MD passed away October 1, 2018. Elaine was born December 31, 1962 in Washington, D.C. to Jean Docie (Barrick) and Lawrence Henry Carey. She was raised in District Heights and graduated from Suitland High School in 1982. She began a career in the Federal Government working for the Architect of the Capitol, and for many years as a staff assistant with the U.S. Senate Sargent at Arms, retiring December 31, 2016 after 33 years of service. Elaine had lived in North Beach for six years until moving to Owings in 2000. In her leisure time Elaine enjoyed painting rocks, crocheting, and vacations at the beach. She loved animals and wildlife, and enjoyed feeding the deer, birds and hummingbirds near her home. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by four sisters, Patricia A. Lukas of Burtonsville, Cynthia A. Stivers and her husband Daniel of Huntingtown, Donna L. Ringgold and her husband Wess of La Plata, and Lauren J. Wilson of Owings. Ruth Pettyjohn Klemstine, or better known as Mom-Mom, passed away peacefully at the Genesis Healthcare Center in Waldorf, Maryland on Saturday, September 29, 2018. She was 93 years young. She was born in Dover, Delaware on August 18, 1925 and married Charles H. Klemstine on August 19, 1943 (one day after turning 18, a condition of her parents). She spent most of her life living and working in Delaware until moving to Murrells Inlet in South Carolina, living there until 2010 when she moved to White Plains, Maryland after the death of her husband and to be closer to her son, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She had a long and happy life being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Besides being all that above, she enjoyed working as a bookkeeper at a long-hauling trucking company and at Wesley College in Dover. She also worked for the telephone company as an operator and spending her later working years in sales at a number of small retail businesses in the Rehoboth area in lower Delaware. Doris Jean Lynch, 87 of Virginia Beach, VA was called home to Heaven with her loving family by her side on September 30, 2018 in Saint Leonard, MD. She follows into Heaven her husband of 62 years, James and her son Michael. Doris worked for New York Telephone as a young woman. When she became a mother, she devoted her attention to her family while her husband served in the Korean War. She leaves behind to cherish her memory: her 2 daughters, Jean Baviera of Virginia Beach, VA and Mary Anne Simard and son-in-law Robert of Saint Leonard, MD. Along with 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. As well as many nieces and nephews. Also preceding her into Heaven are her 2 sisters Kathrine Clarke and Edna Dolan and her brother John Barry. There will be a Funeral Mass at Jesus the Divine Word Catholic Church at 885 Cox Road Huntingtown, MD 20639 on Tuesday October 9, 2018 at 11 o’clock AM. A private burial will follow at a later date in Virginia Beach, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in the memory of Doris to any charity of your choice.

Elisha Amon Cole, age 17 of Waldorf, Maryland, died October 3, 2018 in Waldorf, Maryland. Amon was a Senior at Thomas Stone High School in Waldorf, Maryland and a member of New Life Wesleyan Church in La Plata. He enjoyed football, basketball, dirt bikes, and You-Tubing. He loved hanging with his friends and doing pranks on one another. He also loved his dog, Bella. Amon cherished his family and would do anything for them. He was the son of Timothy Cole and Rose M. Miller. In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his brothers, Raja, Joshua, Omir, and Nathan; his sisters, Shaina, Araya, Nevaeh, and Marissa Williams (step-sister). He was also predeceased by his step-brother, Lawrence Williams. Our beloved Melissa Renee Smith (Manley), better known as Lisa, was born July 20, 1965 to the late Albert Lee Manley and the late Jessie Bell Manley in Goldsboro, NC. She lived a fulfilling life in which she touched the lives of countless people. Melissa was called home to be with our Lord and Savior on October 2, 2018. Melissa received her education at Southern Wayne High School in Dudley, NC, receiving her High School Diploma in 1984. She attended Wayne Community College from 1984 to 1985. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Maryland where she lived with her Brother, Albert Manley for a short time before striking out on her own. With some encouragement from her brother she began a lifelong career in the field of Security as a Federal Contract Protective Service Officer. Over the course of her career she has worked for several different companies including Black Hawk Security, Nationwide Security, Wackenhut International Security, Coastal International Security, and finally Diversified Protection Corporation. She has served in every position from Officer to Sergeant to Lieutenant to Captain to Major. Frederick “Fred” Leo Callan, Jr., 90, died September 30, 2018, at Burnett-Calvert Hospice House, Prince Frederick, MD. He was born in Worcester, MA on February 13, 1928, to Frederick Leo Callan and Bertha Hope [Haney] Callan. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946 and in the U.S. Air Force in 1952. In 1950 he graduated from Worcester Junior College and relocated to Washington, DC. He then attended American University in 1954. Fred began his career in 1951 with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC, retiring in 1970 as a Detective. In 1971, he became an Investigator with Safeway Stores in Landover, MD; and retired again in 1984 to Calvert County, MD with Linda [Keyser] Callan, his wife of 34 years. Fred played baseball and basketball while in college; had try outs with the Boston Red Sox Baseball Farm System. He was an accomplished painter of oils and pencil drawings, enjoyed fishing, hunting and carpentry. Susan Leigh Shaughnessy, 71, of Accokeek, MD, died September 23, 2018, at the Georgetown University Hospital. She was born on August 24, 1947, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Dorothy Leigh Williamson and Frederick W. Smith, a Marine Corps veteran of the recent Pacific Campaigns. After graduating from Norfolk’s Maury High School, she attended classes at the University of Richmond before graduating from the George Washington University in 1969. Her interests in French culture and language led her to travel there before starting a career in public relations. She was soon enrolled in the graduate level p.r. courses at American University which in turn took her to a summers internship at the London School of Economics and Political Science. A successful career in freelance writing and advertising followed. Her personal interests in theology and a spiritual life led her to unite with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and she achieved her goal in the 1980s with membership in the Friends Meeting of Washington. The Friends in turn led her to a close study the philosophy of Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung and his followers. Jacob Soo Hyung West, age 26 of La Plata, Maryland, died October 4, 2018. Jacob was an Accountant with Spalding Consulting in Lexington Park, Maryland. He was a 2010 graduate of La Plata High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting at UMUC in 2014. His favorite past-times were playing computer games and tournaments, listening to favorite music sound tracks from Anime shows, loving his cat Abby, and spending time with his family. He was the son of James Dudley West of Lawton, Oklahoma, Katheryne Lavon Conner West, and her significant other, Wayne Bowling, both of La Plata, Maryland.
