James “Jim” Julian Morse, 72, of Mechanicsville, MD passed away at his residence on August 5, 2014. He was born on May 13, 1942 in Montross, VA to the late Burley Morse and the late Effie Marie (Nash) Morse. Jim enjoyed gardening, being with family and friends, and playing with his dog “Cleedus”. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his wife, Ella Louise Morse; daughter, Vickie S. Ryce; brother, George Morse; and sisters, Em Mable and Clausy Morse. Jim is survived by his sons, James Kevin Morse (wife, Caroline) and Robert K. Long; daughters, Sheila Fowler (companion, James) and Annette Burch (husband, James); sisters, Virginia Kilmon, Helen Kilmon, Louise Hinson, and Dorothy Ingram; and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Wanda Louise Buckler, 58, of Leonardtown, MD passed away on August 5, 2014 at her home. Born December 20, 1955 in Leonardtown, MD she was the daughter of the late James Albert Thompson, Sr. and Agnes Genevieve Farrell Thompson. Wanda graduated from Chopticon High School in 1974. On June 27, 1987, she married her beloved husband, Francis Roger “Ronnie” Buckler at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Leonardtown, MD. Together they celebrated 27 wonderful years of marriage. Wanda enjoyed gardening. Her favorite flowers were tulips and her beautiful iris. She also enjoyed luncheons with her sisters, eating hard crabs, and watching jeopardy and wheel of fortune. However, her family was her first priority, and she enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them. Louis Herbert Meisel, 79 of California, MD previously residing in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and Mt. Clemens, MI, passed away August 4, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Born September 18, 1934 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late William Meisel and Dorothy Newman Meisel. Lou moved from Chicago, IL to Detroit, MI at a young age. He graduated from Central High School in 1951. In his youth he enjoyed playing the drums and played in a band throughout high school and afterward. He also was an avid bowler as a young adult. He attended college at Wayne State University and later at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. On November 5, 1955, he married his beloved wife, Mary Ann Black in Dearborn, MI. Together they celebrated 58 wonderful years together. He was an accomplished photographer having worked at the Detroit Free Press and later in public relations for Michigan Bell Telephone Company. Thomas Monroe Arnold, 89 of Ridge, MD, died August 3, 2014 at his residence. Born July 7, 1925 in his parent’s home in Seat Pleasant, MD, he was the youngest son of the late James and Virginia Arnold. He married Gladys Elaine DeVaughan on September 14, 1951. They celebrated 62 wonderful years of marriage together. They had two children, Steven Arnold and Linda Nelson. He proudly served in the United States Navy in World War II from October 4, 1943 until his honorable discharge on March 20, 1946. He was aboard the U.S.S. Elizabeth C. Stanton and traveled around the world two times. He received the European Theater, Pacific Theater, American Theater and Victory Medals. He worked for Northeast Motor Company, Bob Banning and Pohanka as a body and frame man. After 40 years of dedicated service, he retired on June 26, 1987 and moved to Ridge, MD. Charles “Charlie” Alfred Hewlett, Jr., 62 was born to the late Charles Alfred and Doris Marie Hewlett in Ridge, Maryland on June 1, 1952. Charlie was called home on Monday, August 4, 2014. Charles received his education at The Cardinal Gibbons Institute and later graduated from Great Mills High School. He got an early start in the workforce with St. Michael’s Catholic School. He later gained employment at the Housing Authority with Tubman Douglas Estates, St. Mary’s Hospital and then the Patuxent River Landing Restaurant. On October 9, 1992, Charlie married Princess Maria Torney and in this union they had one son. Although, Charlie loved to watch all sports his favorite team was any team that beat the “Redskins.” Charlie also enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Margaret “Bertille” Norris Cooper, 89 of St. Inigoes, MD passed away August 4, 2014 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center. Born June 4, 1925 in Beachville, MD she was the daughter of the late William E. Norris and Annie G. Unkle Norris. Bertille graduated from St. Michael’s School in 1943. She was employed by the United States Postal Service as a Postmaster until her retirement in 1990, after 29 years of dedicated service. She was honored with Postmaster of the Year Award in 1989. She was an active member of the community for many years, in which she supplied countless baked goods for many functions. She served as a field editor for Taste of Home Magazine. She was a Life Member of the Ridge Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the National League of Postmasters. She was also a former member of NARFE and AARP. Born on October 7, 1919 in Leonardtown, MD she was the daughter of the late Violet Ching Abell Bussler and Thomas Hogan Abell. Annie was the loving wife of the late Hugh C. McCully, Jr., whom she married on April 11, 1946. She is survived by her sisters Mary Lorena Tennyson, Katie Dolores Bussler Kozak, Claudia Lee Bussler Mattingly and brother Carroll Roger Bussler. Annie is also survived by her two godchildren: Marlene Kozak Young and George Robert Bussler. Linda Marie Sowell Anderson age 66 of Mechanicsville, MD and Tall Timbers, MD passed away August 6 after a brave eight year battle with pancreatic cancer. Linda was born to the late Clyde C. Sowell and Elizabeth Sowell on June 30, 1948. Linda is survived by her husband of 47 years, Marshall Dennis Anderson; daughter Michelle Anderson Beighley (husband Bob Beighley); son Mark Thomas Anderson (wife Teresa MacDonald) and grandchildren Marshall Anderson and Ann Marie Anderson; Brother John Sowell (wife Stephanie) and Sister Brenda Gibson (husband Eric Gibson). Linda grew up in Accokeek, MD and met Marshall at Gwynn Park High School. In 1974, they renovated a farmhouse in Mechanicsville and relocated. Linda was an avid gardener, painter, miniaturist, seamstress and cook. Linda held various bookkeeper positions including AR Systems of which Marshall is a founder. In 1992, Marshall and Linda purchased a home in Tall Timbers, MD where they enjoyed time on the water and friendship from the Tall Timbers community. Gwendolyn “Gwen” Ellen Costello, 70 died of cancer Thursday, August 7, 2014 leaving behind her beloved husband of 39 years Richard and a dearly loved son Kevin. She is also survived by her mother Anna Catherine, “Kate” Bean (93), her sister Kathleen, “Cassie” Booth, and her two brothers Tom and Frank Bean. Gwen was a gifted writer having written and published over fifty Catholic religious education books and audio visual materials for adults, teenagers and children. She was an editor at Twenty Third Publications, in Mystic, CT before being named Publisher in 1999. More importantly however, it wasn’t what she accomplished during her life but who she was. Gwen cared deeply about the poor, the children of Haiti, and the victims of war. She was deeply spiritual and those who knew her recognized immediately the depth of faith that permeated all that she said and did. She loved films, but especially foreign films, traveling, reading, taking long walks with her beloved dog “Sammy” and sitting quietly with her God. Jerome received his education from the St. Mary’s County Public School system, in St. Mary’s County, MD. He was employed over the years through various businesses throughout Lexington Park. Jerome was truly a family man. He was a loving son, father, brother and uncle. Joseph Harry Graham, 92 of Leonardtown, MD, passed away August 11, 2014 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center. Born September 11, 1921 in Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late William Floyd Graham and Ida Miriam Thomas. Joseph proudly served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946, then in the Naval Reserves as Lieutenant Commander until 1981. He took part in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. He married his beloved wife, Ruth Gilstrap Graham on May 11, 1946 in Stephens County, GA. Together they celebrated 68 wonderful years of marriage. He earned his PhD in Plant Pathology from NC State in 1950. He was employed by the Department of Agriculture as a Plant Pathologist until 1977 and then by Waterman-Loomis Seed Company until 1983. He travelled extensively with both jobs, including to the Soviet Union, South America, Australia, and Europe. His hobbies included vegetable gardening and carpentry.
